Conventions of Genre:
Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics, for example stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy or girl bands. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals, illustrative, amplifying or contradicting. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work, like a visual style. There is frequently reference to the notion of looking, for example screens within screens and telescopes, and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. There is often intertextual reference to films, TV programmes and other music videos.
In heavy metal music video normally the people in the music video would have long haired, usually males with tattoos and piercings, swear words and often behaving in a very masculine way. Most heavy metal music videos have shots of the band playing their instruments with close ups of the guitars and drums. The theme
It also makes the song more memorable as everyone seems to remember the cartoon music video.
Surreal -
Surreal music videos are like it is from a dream and is very abstract and weird, a lot of different genres use this type of music video especially in in the 70's. The Beatles song 'Yellow Submarine' are a good example of this, it also uses animation in the music video but I think it is very surreal as it is a really weird music video with a lot of colours and impossible features. This music video definitely made the Beatles song memorable and even to this day everyone will know about 'the Yellow Submarine' and the Beatles.
Narrative
The sounds and music in this film are very realistic, and to the point. There is not anything abstract or out of place, and everything is very appropriate. The sound effects in the film are diegetic (sounds that the actors can hear), with the score being nondiegetic (sounds that the actors cannot hear). The film falls under the category of realism, with no stylizing or manipulation of images and sounds.
The visual track is used to get the main idea across to the viewers by showing us exactly how the artists feel. One example of Ethos occurs in an interview, used to express the artist's feelings towards audio distortion. Guns n’ Roses Guitarist Slash is one artist being interviewed about his feelings. He tells us, “We [music listeners] are lost in a black hole we [artists] get it [music] and how important it is and how we get it.”(17:00-17:13) This ties back to the main idea on how music compression causes feelings to be taken out of music. This is a very good use of Ethos because by using an interview with an actual music artist talking about audio distortion which actually occurs in his songs, we the viewers understand exactly how the artists feel about it and allows us to know why it is a
The lyrics of metal music are often misunderstood to be a call to action, advocating violence to listeners. In reality the lyrics are meant to comfort the listeners and help them deal with the negative emotions they feel from this situation. Especially amongst teens who most frequently feel the negative effects of being different. The most musically "heavy" kind of metal there is is called death metal. Originally, the name was coined because of the lyrics of this subgenre of metal. The lyrics dealt with death caused by, murder, war, and any other kind of unnatural death imaginable. Now, the name is used to refer to a kind of metal with especially driving rhythms, energetic instrumentation and vocals (usually of the screaming and grunting sort), and incredibly low end and heavy sounds. Death metal is basically as far as you can go into the genre of metal. Even in this subgenre, the lyrics often spread positive messages.
Today I will be describing my design for a music video set in ancient Sumer. My video will depict elements from the Hymns of Inanna and the video of “Blurred Lines.” These two elements will allow a reflection of the cultural metanarrative and the sexual script of ancient Sumer. The video will play out between two gods and a priestess. My video will have four main sections that will breakdown what the video consists of and how it all comes together. These sections will be my main characters, setting, imagery, and lastly the theme of the video. There will be subsections that serve to only expand on each of my main sections and to give clarity to them.
The black experience is one that always needs to be told. There is always a new story because much of Black history has been omitted from American History. More recently, Singer/Producer John Legend inked a deal with WGN to develop a dramatic series on this very story. Underground, a black slavery experience, became WGN’s highest rated series in the station’s history, outpacing WGN America’s 2015-2016 primetime average by 508 percent in total viewers and 1,005 percent among adults 18-49 in live-plus-seven viewing (DVR). Netflix’s 13TH, a documentary which tackles race and mass incarceration, was the first non-fiction film to open the prestigious NY Film Festival in its 54-year history. There is already talk about it being an Oscar nominee. Currently, the American public is about 40 percent minority and that’s increasing by about half a percent every year. The viewing audience
The artefact that I have chosen to discuss in this thesis is a Tame Impala music video for their single “Let It Happen” which was released in August 2015. Music videos are also one of the most common modern day music advertisements and are also an expression of kinship between modern day technology and design. Music videos have become so popular in our modern culture so when they subsequently involve an enormous amount of surrealism references,
In the documentary ‘Absolutely Ballroom’, many techniques are used to entice the audience to continue to watch their presentation of reality television. The first aspect is the songs they use. To be truly effective, as this documentary was, the songs must fit perfectly so that the audience subconsciously is listening, but consciously is observing the images on screen and don’t missing out on any important information which may detract from the story – line.
The music in this video appeals to the audience emotions. The purpose of having this fearful and overwhelming music is to cause the audience to feel scared or to actually pay attention to what is said. I am sure that if there was no music in this trailer the argument of the media would have been less effective. The music is changed when the trailer moves into to the decision that could change the cultures perspective towards women. The tone of the music changes to a more energetic and hopefully version. Now, that the audience is listening the provider adds captions and wording in the trailer. The choice of wording in the trailer is influencing the majority of the audience to feel guilt and hatred against the news media. The media is shown as the enemy which causes the audience to make a decision based on their feelings towards the media. Although, the trailer does mention women can make a change and the news media can be a positive influence if used by the proper people. The images that are shown can be hurtful and hard for some viewers to
Remix Culture One of the biggest issues that arises with remix art is the issue of ‘Remix vs. Plagiarism.” When does a remixed work become an original work of art? Is the work considered original as soon as it is tweaked or when it is unrecognizable? Neither, a work is unique when its purpose and meaning transcends that of the original. Works like Montgomery Lee’s “Copyright Symphony” take a variety of images and use them to create music out of the embedded data in the photographs.
Since its inception in 2005, YouTube has grown into the most popular video sharing platform in the world. With its easy to use platform and a massive perspective audience, YouTube connects many content creators with the audience they’re seeking, and introduces many individuals to content and creators they otherwise might have passed over. The sheer amount of content and variety on YouTube has created microcosms of fans, creators, and genres of content, all with their own specific conventions and popular YouTube Stars. One particularly interesting genre that had become popular is the abstract film. In this rhetorical analysis, the conventions of abstract film and storytelling will be reviewed, how one popular abstract artist, Poppy, fits into the genre, and how my own creation, “I’m Poopy” fits into the conventions of Abstract storytelling as well.
The main difference between Hollywood classical films is that they are narrative while Music Videos are non-narrative in nature. Films present series of events in different ways that imply connection between one event and the next. It basically follows the cause-and-effect relationship where one action is the result of another (Manchel, 1990). Editing in films binds the narrative by assembling sequences, layers of imagery, the story, music, effects and the pace to shape the story into a final product.Editing in music videos is done to setup a mood, feeling and emotional state which disconnects the audience from the traditional narrative. There may be or may not be a story, but the main focus of music videos is ...
You can see how they are just going with the flow complementing one another and not trying to overpower each other. Also you can see and hear the improvisation, I liked that this had an actually video of the musicians because you can see how they are just going with how they feel and letting the music speak to one another and the audience. This version is not just another interpretation is this song it is very different. With the free flowing it also reminds me of those cartoons without the sounds like fantasia where it is all instrumentals and nor lyrics. Just the instruments talking to one another and each note and pitch has a different meaning and feeling to it that is interpreted individually by a different person. This allows the audience to come up with their own meaning and interpretation as to what is being said through the
This is done by playing a serious song over a seemingly silly scene. It is used in the film by playing “Still” by Geto Boys as Peter and his friends throw a printer in a field and began to destroy a company printer. The machine is first thrown on the ground, and then it proceeds to be kicked with gunshot effects going off with each hit. Peter then brings a baseball bat out which is further used to smash the printer until Micheal starts to use his fist which Peter and Samir have to pull him off. The scene itself is full of ridiculous, and the music helps show this especially with the gangster-like lyrics being sung in the
Music videos influence society’s ideologies, by changing the beliefs which also influence behavioural patterns. Music video changes the beliefs of people because what was once acceptable a few years ago may not be acceptable now, society changes with history. In Today’s time, the 21st century music as well as many other it...
Almost everyone has a favorite genre of film, but how everyone defines their favorite genre can differ greatly. Horror is one of the genres where its definition can be perceived differently by many people. Like all other genres, horror does have rules and traditions that must be included in order for a film to be considered a horror film. These rules and traditions include a protagonist, an antagonist, an escape or escape attempt of some sort, and very influential audio and visual effects.
