A meritocracy is a form of management or administration in which people applying for a specific position are chosen and advance in position based on their stature or ability. There are somewhat few governments in the world that are based on this principle. A more recent and modern example of meritocracy in our society is Justin Trudeau’s cabinet. Trudeau's cabinet includes an equal number of men and women, and the members were chosen based on their abilities.

If you were to take a government for instance, a meritocracy would be people who are very much able and have the best qualifications and it rewards those who perform well. Unfortunately, some could argue that this form of government is very biased because it could undoubtedly degrade some people, who have competent skills, but are not quite as knowledgeable or as prepared as others. …show more content…

This has been shown in politics already, as possible presidents and prime ministers typically have a long history in government positions prior to reaching the head of their state or nation. The characteristics that we look for in a potential leader are exactly the characteristics that would be forced out of them in a meritocracy: an eagerness to work hard, ability to make decisions under stress, lack of corruption, negotiation, good public relations, and especially high competence.

A meritocracy, according to those who support such a form of government, has more of an ability to inject a beneficial work ethic into people than other forms of government do. If people are aware that progress and promotion is based on merit, then it is more possible that they will do things that will boost their chances.
