Mental illness is any disease or condition that reconstruct the way a person thinks, feels, behaves, relates to others and to his or her surroundings. The symptoms can range from mild to severe, and can be presented in different forms, such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder, Anxiety disorder, Depression, and Obsessive compulsive disorder. (NHS Choices, 2013) When mental illness is not being treated appropriately, the individual often find coping with life’s daily routine and demand difficult. There are various models being used in the treatment of mental illness, such as Medical model, Social model, Psychological model and Family models. (Mental HealthCare, 2013) Medical Model attributes mental illness to physiological, biological or genetic causes. ( Mental Healthcare, 2013) Genetic factors suggest that psychopathology is inherited from parent, through genes. Genes contain instructions for the function of each cell in the body and are sometimes responsible for how we look, act, and think. While, biology causes relates mental illnesses to an abnormal balance of brain chemicals called neurotransmitter. When neurotransmitter.is damaged, messages may not make it through to the brain correctly, or cause injury to certain areas of the brain, leading to symptoms of mental illness. Biological science has also given insight into the causes of some conditions, such as GPI and Alzheimer's disease. (McLeod, 2014) ((Hungerford,2009) Physiology treats mental disorders in the same way like a fractured bone. It considers symptoms to be outward signs of the inner physical disorder and believe that if symptoms are grouped together and classified into a condition, the actual cause can be discovered and suitable physical treatment can then applie... ... middle of paper ... ...llo , 2007) Individual should learn for themselves what is working and not working for them. ( Marsico, 2009) The positive sides to their unusual experiences should be given attention and respect and not simply labelled as symptoms of an illness. People with these experiences should be empowered to make their journey through recovery and be allowed diversity of treatment that suits their different experiences. (Russello, 2007 ) With the use of medical model some feel they are not treated with dignity and respect, or that the therapist do not understand them. They feel they are being pressured to take medication when they do not want to and that spiritual aspects of their experiences are not given any respect.(Russello,2007 ) However, medical model is still the widely accepted model despite the few lapses and the provision of partial explanation to mental illnesses.
