Ignorance is the lack of knowledge of information, incomprehension of education, or being in the state of being uninformed about something. Thus, everyone is ignorant in some areas of education, because even the uncommon, accelerated, over achieving human is ignorant. Another word for ignorance is Mental Fermentation. Mental Fermentation is associated with The Four Noble Truths and The Five Hindrances. The Five Hindrances will obscure, obstruct, and distort the outcomes of The Four Noble Truths. According to The Five Hindrances, ignorance, or in other words, Mental Fermentation causes those to feel restless Roberts 2 and regretful (What-Buddha-Said). The following incident from a student that attends Duke University revealed in Durham, …show more content…
I am the student who created the noose and after playing around with it left it hanging on a low tree branch next to a table where I had been sitting with some of my friends. At the time, I truly did not appreciate the historical sensitivity of a noose hanging in a tree. As a result of this incident people should feel that at this rate of ignorance, increasing day by day, the world would be living hell in the next ten years. The world may not see what ignorance is doing to the society right now, but when ten years come and go by, the world will then see the difference and damage it is …show more content…
Which contributes to ignorance in America. According to SmartSmartSmart (Debate.org), “Ignorance will be the death of us. Ignorance is definitely an issue. I think there is more ignorance in America than any other place in the world when it comes to education and war.” Also, Americans do not understand the threat that other countries make against us. Other countries consider Americans to be lazy. As a whole. Although there are a few Americans that take full advantage of their education, that does not make a difference if most of the country does not take their education seriously. According to the United States Department of Labor: Bureau of Labor Statistics, the following graph indicates that facts upon Americans not caring about
In Rereading America Michael Moore entitled “Idiot Nation” focuses on the failing educational system in the United States of America. The American nation has decreased in their studies and have lowered their standards, yet America still claims they have their priorities in order, which is education. Moore attempts to persuade his readers that the people who are to blame are lack of education in politics and the budget cuts they are making, however, politics blame teachers for making America decrease in their schooling test scores. Americas have many opportunities and useful tools to be successful; however,
This was an example of genocide that we can learn from and know what genocide is so we can stop genocide from occurring in the future because we are the next generation of the world..
If it was not apparent enough that America’s education system is failing, Michael Moore’s “Idiot Nation” openly explains to us about the truth. America, for being the richest country, is behind in the educational standpoint. America needs to rethink their standards when it comes to education. America is more focused on corporate earning than educating our youth. The author of “Idiot Nation” makes the reader think about how America is viewed in the world. The purpose of Michael Moore’s essay is to point out what is wrong with this nation and also give the reader the motivation to actually do something about the situation at hand. Moore is trying to make readers aware of where we send our children. The author is trying to shock readers with the facts to do something to improve the American education system.
What is ignorance? Ignorance is defined as, “the state of being ignorant; lack of knowledge, learning, information, etc” (Dictonary.com). When ignorance is in a novel, it gives the readers a chance to see some insight on who the characters are and the families they come from. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, there is a reoccurring theme of ignorance, the theme of ignorance is shown between a series of racial ignorance, situational ignorance, and gender ignorance. Ignorance in the story causes many conflicts between the characters or themselves in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.
I as well as many people don’t understand the symbolism of the the hangman’s knot or the history behind its uses. I have always came to understand that it was an offensive knot to others because of the lynchings going on during slavery time period. Even today the hangman’s knot still plays a role in modern hate crime acts; However the hangman’s knot dates back to as early as the 16th century. The brutality portrayed by the knot brings out many feelings among many different people, And with that causes many acts of violence and rage toward others. The hangman’s knot, or also known as noose is a hard subject for many African Americans to talk about or discuss. Because at the time of these crimes the African American race was looked down upon. They were treated like animals and were never given the least bit of respect, they were tortured, beaten, and then hanged. I can agree that if this happened to my ancestors I would be offended by the many things that used to happen, and the symbols that are used in hate crimes today.
Throughout the history of mankind there have been numerous cases in which people were victims of oppression or hate. Among these cases the sole reasoning behind this oppression or hate being based on the perception of others. History has shown that society is responsible for labeling groups of people, generally these labels are misleading.
Education has long been at the top of Americas list of responsibilities to its citizens. In 1797 Benjamin Franklin said:
Ignorance is bliss as one who is ignorant does not fully understand all the issues occurring around him or her and is therefore somewhat innocent to them. In “Revelation”, by Flannery O’Conner, the main character Mrs. Turpin is ignorant of the fact she is the same as everyone else, but she has different classifications of people of which she is of the higher category. O’Connor uses “Revelation” as a tool to represent people who are both ignorant and not ignorant and what it almost takes for some people to fully overcome ignorance.
Margaret Mead said, “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” In our society we value education over everything else. If one has a high education, then they will be able to make a better living for themselves. No school system is alike, some are better than others. The American education system used to be known as one of the leaders in education, having the highest graduation rate, and being innovative when it came to teaching styles. Now, it seems that it’s changing and other countries have taken it’s places as the best. This makes sense since the statistics show that most American students are losing to foreign countries. According to Paul Zoch in Doomed to Fail, Japan’s high school graduation was 90% whereas, the United
This is not an educational issue but a political one which needs to be changed as soon as possible. The United States can no longer be falling behind on education or else the percentage of students failing to graduate high school and not attending college will just increase therefore it will create a decline in the economic status of the country as education has become the weapon and power to any society or community’s success. For example if you compare major developed countries such as Singapore and Japan you can see that their main focus is educating their kids and public in order to sustain a strong background.
The sad truth is that almost everybody is affected. In the society we live in today, jobs require you to have at least an associate’s degree. Low level paying jobs are even requiring you to have some college experience. College is turning into a “must have” situation for a lot of people. Due to the growth of population and technology, students now have competition around the whole planet. Speaking about global competition, college some European countries is free. It is insane how we call the United States of America “land of opportunity”, but European nations have took initiative to offer free or extremely cheap price for college. This is very unfair to American citizens to pay thousands of dollars for college and European students pay little to nothing. The people who are to blame are the universities and the department of education in
The education system has been a controversial issue among educators. Requirements of school do not let student choose what they want to study for their future. It’s a big issue to force student study specific curriculums, which don’t help them improve, and what they like to create something. Educators choose a general system for education to all students which based on general knowledge. Intelligent or genius students have to be in that system of education, which doesn’t let them improve their creativity. Educators attempt to change that system to make it better, but their changing was not that great to be an example for the world. Also, did that change qualify education system to compete other systems or not? In some examples and reasons have been made me agree with some of points from Gatto’s and Edmunson’s and disagree them.
Ignorance is the term used to describe someone who doesn’t know about something. Ignorance may sound familiar as it is used in the proverb, “Ignorance is Bliss”. According to the dictionary, “Not knowing something is often more comfortable than knowing it” (Dictionary 1). The banker lacks the knowledge of the prisoner, and he lacks the prisoner’s time and ability to think over materialism, but the banker has what the prisoner doesn’t, which is emotion. The two characters are both ignorant in their own ways. The prisoner lacks emotional depth while the banker lacks intelligence. Whoever is right is up to the reader and their own views on life.
But when we consider ignorance along with agnosticism which is a mode of the intellective process, there is an obvious contradiction. Because ignorance is not just mere lack of a knowing, conversely, every ignorance is always a process of being ignorant of something quite precise. In other words, one who ignores knows in a particular form what it is that he ignores. For example, a person who has no knowledge on economics is not ignorant of what a Cobb-Douglas equation is, because he lacks information to such equations. Only the man who is told about Cobb-Douglas equations, and does not know what we are talking about because he does not understand the meaning of the words, only then is this man ignorant of what a Cobb-Douglas equation is.
In school all kids are really forced to worry about is learning the knowledge used to pass the state tests. After the test taking is over the knowledge is forgotten and hardly ever used again. Things such as being prepared for college, jobs or even knowing how to do simple everyday life things are being over looked. Most American teenagers do not know the basics of everyday life. “The United States tests horribly as compared with the rest of the developed world, leading to American children being ill prepared for college and careers in a global economy after high school graduation.” (Emma Connell, Dead Standardized Scores Society) America is one of the top countries in the world, yet our education system is testing behind the rest because ou...
