Men have almost always been dominant in most aspects of life and it was not until the feminist movement has finally gained its power that it was able to bring equality amongst the sexes, but there is still a great difficulty to be able to change the mentality of an entire society. Although women tend to be the victims of sexism, men are strongly the victims in the profession of nursing because they are seen as the minority in nursing. In fact, men were the first nurses back in 250 B.C. in India, according to Quan (2011). Fortunately, due to the increase of male nurses, the acceptance of having a man be a nurse has greatly increased but that has also heightened its target. The media has for long taken advantage of men in nursing to create comedic television series such as The Mindy Project and Red Band Society. Unfortunately, due to the strong impact the media has on society, male nurses are disregarded and are mostly viewed negatively, even with its increasing popularity. Although certain traits such as caring, compassion and kindness are associated with women, they are traits that all nurses should acquire, regardless of gender. With that said, man or woman, nurses are all alike and as nurses today to help with this problem, we should support male nurses as much as female nurses. Also, male nurses should continue to work by the standards and guidelines from organizations such as the CNO to assure the best quality of care to patients, showing that they are capable of being good nurses as well.
