Memorial Union
One of the most magnificent structures on Iowa State University’s beautiful campus. Memorial Union. To most, it is the heart of Iowa State. From food and apparel, to books and events, Memorial Union has it all. This all couldn’t be possible without the perfect design of the building. Memorial Union has changed a lot over the years, but it has always kept the main eye-catching composition. It was designed in 1922, by a man named William T. Proudfoot, to honor alumni who served in World War I. (Architecture). Memorial Union is one of the most magnificent structures on Iowa State’s campus because of its unique history, bold design, and great values. The 316,713-square foot building makes it the third largest building on campus

(Building), but the largest in terms of significance. Once the building was officially created in 1929, it set a precedent for Iowa State University.
“The classic style architecture of the Memorial Union reflects the Greek and Roman influences employed by many architects, not only in America, but throughout the western world. Columns with Corinthian capitals, Palladian windows, triangular pediments, and formally balanced facades are a few noteworthy details denoting the classic style” (Architecture). Proudfoot kept the Greek and Roman theme by adding a large zodiac crest in the south entrance, which now today is still being preserved as students walk around it while walking through. With only three other buildings on campus, Beardshear Hall, Curtiss Hall, and McKay Hall, Memorial Union was put on the south end of campus to create a perfect central quad. rest. The name Memorial Union is a very common pair of words used on our campus, so common that we forget the true meaning of the framework. It was built not only to act as a midpoint of the campus, but to recognize and preserve the students who risked and gave their lives for our freedom. Located directly on the north facing entrance of the building, there is a walkway, with walls scattered with names throughout it. This hallway is called “Gold Star Hall”. “In World War I, when a family had a son or daughter in the service, they displayed a card with a simple blue star in their window. When a life was lost, the card with the blue star was changed to one with a gold star - hence the name, Gold Star Hall” (Gold). This tradition still holds true today. After World War II, the school added editions from Vietnam, Korea, and more recently, Somalia and Iraq. The hall represents Memorial Union, and Iowa State’s values entirely. As time has passed, Memorial Union is not the same as it once was nearly a century ago.
Iowa State has added to the building multiple times over the time span, in fact the university is planning to have another addition in the next couple of years (Building). “In the Memorial Union's 80+ year history, eleven additions have gone on to all sides of the original structure, the most recent opening in the spring of 2008” (Building). This shows that the Memorial Union not only pays great attention to honoring our military alumni, but it also reflects the ISU Mission. Iowa State is a bold, goal setting, and intelligent school. The Memorial Union’s massive structure mirrors Iowa State’s bold attitude. Not very many schools have such large buildings as we do, and even though our Memorial Union is on of the best in the country, Iowa State still doesn’t settle. The University always wants to make it better and add things to it to make it even better than it was before. ISU doesn’t settle for good, they settle for great, and Memorial Union is
proof. Memorial Union is an amazing structure. Historical art, wonderful design, and such an intriguing history. As its main purpose of the name was to honor and create a memorial for our brave alumni, it in a way is a memorial for every student who has set foot on this historic campus. Millions of students have gone to this school, and Memorial Union has been there from the start. As you walk through the enormous building, you are walking with every single cyclone. It is a memorial not only for our brave soldiers, but a memorial to commemorate and create a legacy for this school that will never be forgotten.
Students should know this place when they are on campus life. This place was known as the soul to the ISU campus student body,” Memorial Union”. MU was Located in the front of the middle line. It was the biggest activity center and central building on campus now. Opened in September 1928, memorial union was a building that was used as a memorial to the sacrificed Iowa State soldiers. As a land granted school by the government, Iowa State University has had not entertaining center before 1920, because the university only has academic buildings and farm buildings. There is no place for both students and faculties to gather for cultural, entertainment or social events. So people start to think of a building that can be used for these purposes. Finally, when the project of Memorial Union was settled; ISU decided not only use the building as a memorial to the honorable soldiers, but also a super center for students. Nowadays, it became the memorial, living art, and camp of the student life. The best place for students to spend their time.
Millions come to the Tomb to see the tomb and ceremony. The men laid in the tomb are a testament to all the unknowns, even though there are only three men in the tomb they are symbolizing all of the unknowns lost. The guard’s movement are very symbolic and mean so much to other soldiers. The movement of 21 steps and seconds is for the highest military honor a: 21 gun salute. The monument is one of the most famous and sacred military monuments in the United

Throughout the semester I have grown accustomed to my surroundings. Well, at least for the most part. There is still one building that intrigues me to this very day. As I’d walk past it on my journey to Baruch College, I’d stare the entire time. The building seems like a simple rectangular building. However, some aspect of the architectural design captivates me. Strangely enough, army trucks are always parked alongside the building. However, upon attempting to research the building, I could not find it. I was too intimidated to venture in and inquire for the name. None of the bystanders I asked knew the name of the building, nor cared to.
The University of Maryland names the majority of its campus’s buildings after the legacies of influential alumni and world scholars. Most would assume that the activities that occur in each of these buildings would be a representation of the namesake, however, that is not true for the Skinner Building.
Tragic events occur not only in the United States, but also all over the world. From these tragic events communities, families, and the government decide to place memorials for people that were lost and as a thank you for people protecting the citizens of the country. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The Wall, in Washington D.C. is one of these cases. However, what exactly was the purpose of this memorial? The purpose of putting up the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was not only to thank the veterans for their bravery, but to remind future generations about happened during the Vietnam War. Also, the memorial is important to help people and the veterans to accept the fact that the war actually
I felt this morbid and realistic presence of the soldiers and for a mere second felt the gloom and menace of the war they were in. I walked around the site to gather more information on what the memorial was dedicated to. I walked past the mural wall and as I did, I paid particular attention to the various images of people and equipment on the wall. All of the facial expressions of the people on the wall gave the memorial a very real presence to it. I continued walking down the granite walk
This paper will be covering the infrastructure of Franklin College and cover some of the changes to the campus and why the changes happened. Most of the information this paper is based upon came from articles found in Franklin College’s Archives. My archival search began in the grounds and campus files. From there I moved to maps. I received many ideas from Ruth, the archivist, and through the oral history she gave me, I was able to piece together a topic based on the things I thought stood out among Franklin College’s grounds changes. Most evidence is dated, but there are a couple maps without dates. The maps can be easily traced back to when they were published based upon the information gathered from other sources. Another issue that arouse when researching came from issues regarding some accurate dat...
The U.S National World War II Memorial is a national memorial to honor and remember the sixteen million people who served in the armed forces of the United States and also the people at home during World War II. It is also a monument to the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of the American people (National). The memorial is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on the former site of the Rainbow Pool at the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool, between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Composed of 56 fifty-six pillars and a pair of arches surrounding a plaza and fountain (Fig.1), the memorial is symbolic of the defining event of the 20th twentieth century. The northern arch is inscribed with Atlantic; the southern one, Pacific. Each pillar is marked with the name of all the 48 forty-eight ...
The author of this website, which would be the National Council on Public History, is specifically looking at what exactly is public history and what exactly is meant by public history. Public History can be defined as history in the field. It is the use of history in real life situations. It is history applied and goes outside the realm of academic history. The author does mention that while there used to be clear definitions between public and academic history with public history being more multi-disciplinary, history as an academic subject has also increasingly become multi-disciplinary. Public historians have many different names such as archivists, museum professionals, and local historians. The author’s main argument surrounding these definitions of public history is that there are different forms of history with public history being the kind that the average person sees. Public historians can deeply impact their local communities and many collaborate with local community members on projects to ensure that the history they’re detailing is that of the community who is affected by it. The author does note that while many public history projects can be educational, the purpose might be more for an intellectual history like for a business’s archives. Public history projects could also be used to promote the local town or for the town’s own economic development.
The Vestibule leading to this entrance hall is identical to the entrance of the Temple of Erectheus on the Acropolis of Athens. The statues in the deep niches, carved by Frederick MacMonnies, combine “American idealism with the elegance of Second Empire Style and is in advanced realm by their lack of enframement or paneling.” The vaulted entrance hall, which leads to the grand staircase, is segmented into three aisles and is clad in Iowa sandstone. The arched central aisle has the names of prominent Bostonians inscribed on them.
When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
Originating on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, 1918, the cessation of fighting at the end of World War I would come to be known as Veterans Day. This hallowed day, was thought to be the end to wars, and was reflected upon by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 as representative of the solemn pride to honor those who died in service of their country. It became very famous and known among people during that time. One of the great things and services that this museum gives till now is the presence of Arnett Hartsfield in it until nowadays. He was hired as a firefighter in 1940s and 50s. He did a lot throughout his journey in this place fighting racism and also serving his country. He is volunteering there, not caring about his old age which is 92 years old, and still working there to give more to his country and to benefit the coming generations about the history of such an amazing place. When he was hired he had a Law degree from U.S.C and he was determined to equalize people in the fire station and make life the same for the black firefighters as the white firefighters. He is usually telling the visitors stories about the black firefighters during that time and their great achievements. He isn’t only serving the museum through being there only, but he also travels and visits places where he talks to people about the African American firefighters and that they should be equal to the white firefighters and also that they should be hired with the same percentage as them. The museum is opened based on the volunteer work and donations from people. Some people are allowed to use it if they need a good place to hold a meeting on or if they have a very special dinner. Organizations can use it too, to make trips and retreats. This museum helped in declaring 2 major
