The 2010 update indicated that 227 tons of newly discovered melamine-contaminated milk powder have been confiscated again. In 2008, a previous nationwide crackdown of 124 tons of contaminated from a dairy farm in Northwest China's Qinghai province and 103 tons by other manufacturers in Hebei, Shanxi, Heilongjiang provinces and Tianjin. In late June 2010, the latest melamine scandal was first discovered in Northwest China's Gansu province. Since then officials have since traced its source to the Dongyuan Dairy Factory, Minhe County, in neighboring Qinghai province. Officials have arrested six suspects and detained another 41 for allegedly participating in the production and distribution of melamine-tainted milk powder. In March 2010, a Shanghai
All of these dealers claimed they were innocent, but one particular defense attorney, Cynthia Barbare, took her client, Jose Luis Vega, at his word. He claimed to be an honest auto mechanic and the dirt under his fingernails led her to believe him. Plus, she found it odd that a reportedly wealthy drug trafficker lived in such a meager home. Her first line of defense was simply requesting that the drug lab test the veracity of the drugs. None of the prior dealers from Alonso’s cases had done so because the Dallas county court system unofficially penalized anyone who requested verification from the drug lab with a much lengthier sentence. The courts had simply relied upon the officers’ field tests. Ultimately, Barbare’s gutsy choice paid off
Conclusion: In support of my hypothesis, it is found that the mystery powder is one of the five known compounds. Through experimenting the chemical reaction in spot plates, it is concluded that the mystery powder is icing sugar. It was fairly straightforward because we just have to see which substances matched the reaction of the mystery powder. All in all, my hypothesis is correct and through researching the interpretation, icing sugar is the mystery substance.

On November 2, 1872 Woodhull and Claflin’s Weekly published a story reporting that a prominent and well known minister, Henry Ward Beecher, allegedly had an extra marital affair with Elizabeth Tilton, the wife of a well known editor and Beecher’s assistant, Theodore Tilton. Both Tiltons were members of Beecher’s congregation. Victoria Woodhull, supporter of free love and a proponent of women’s suffrage, implied in her article that Beecher, a pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Brooklyn and an advocate of strong moral values, did not practice what he preached and committed adultery, something he advised against from the pulpit. It is believed that Mrs.Tilton confessed the affair to her husband in 1870 and subsequently retracted her confession under pressure from Beecher as well as Mr. Tilton. Mr. Tilton, apparently seeking to unburden himself, told the story to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a women’s movement activist, who in turn repeated it to Mrs. Woodhull.
The use of illegal substances in sports is a trendy topic in today’s society. In the last few years a copious amount of players have been under the spotlight of substance abuse, which led to a punishment for their actions. Andrew Sullivan wrote an article in the year 2004 called “In a Drugged-up Nation, the Steroid Sports Star is King”, in which he illustrates how these “pharmaceuticals” have revolutionized sports around the world but mostly in America. These drugs have had a large influence in the overall performance of the players, even if it the use of drugs is “often denied or simply overlooked”(Sullivan 1), it will lead to a lack of judgment in what is right and what is wrong.
What are bath salts? Unlike the lavender bath salts found at Bath & Body Works, the designer drugs (bath salts) are not meant to be used for aromatherapeutic purposes. The drug is typically a white crystalline powder that can be injected, eaten, smoked or snorted .Bath salts, made their significant entrance to the United States from England in the year 2010. In the UK the drugs were used as a cheap alternative to ecstasy at clubs. Science, statistics, law and history help us understand why these drugs are more dangerous than any other drug in the United States.
Five players were interviewed by USA Today in 2010. These players were asked about how their lives have changed since the 2007 Mitchell report came out. For the most part they are remorseful but some players are upset and claim they were falsely accused. However, the players who claim that are happy that it happened because it has helped clean up the game and at just a small price really. The report changed their lives forever, mostly for better, because a huge weight was lifted off their shoulders. They no longer had to lie and worry about being caught every day; they could just show up and play now. By banning substances and having stricter testing guidelines the players will play more stress free.
Several studies have been done to try to determine what makes someone go from using a drug once experimentally to becoming a drug addict. One of the most popular theories was created by Inaba and Cohen that is called the Biopsychosocial Theory. This theory takes many different factors in hand to try to explain further how a drug addiction has been influenced using three different factors, heredity, environment, and the use of psychoactive drugs (Inaba and Cohen 75). It has been found that the “intial structure and chemistry of the nervous system” is passed down through many generations and that “behaviors seem to have an inheritable component (Inaba and Cohen 76). This shows that certain actions that are associated with drugs, gambeling, etc can be influenced by addictive behaviors that were prevalent generations ago. Environment plays a huge factor in determining how drug addiction will affect a person, family dynamics, age, race, peer pressure, and tragedy are reasons someone may feel compelled to use which could lead to later continual drug abuse. Lastly, the use of psychoactive drugs plays an essential part in turning an experimental phase into a full blown drug addiction.
Crack is the name given to cocaine that has been transformed into a condensed, more pure, rock form that can be smoked. It is the most addictive form of cocaine due to a higher potency level than the typical batch of street cocaine. Crack cocaine has often been referred to as a ‘soul drug’ because it has a tendency to rob its victims of everything including money, family, morals, and even life itself. Furthermore, it is possible to become addicted to crack cocaine from the very first time it is used, creating a vortex of misery for those who come into contact with it. Compared to other drugs, crack cocaine has a rather short history in America since it was only introduced the 1980’s. However, within this short period, Crack cocaine
The Meth Project website was created to reduce the use of the drug methamphetamine through public service messages, public policy and community outreach. The program, while focused on teenagers, reaches out to all ages. The website is full of information such as statistical data, intimate stories and many community service projects. The Meth Project’s edgy advertising documents the downward spiral that is caused by the use of the drug. While some may find the Meth Project advertisements unpleasant, they portray the story of the incredible power of meth and its effects on the human body.
“Meth, not even once” is a popular phrase that is associated with this drug. This drug has many known horrible effects associated with it, plus many effects more I am sure are going to be discovered over time. I am intending to cover the history, effects, the different categories of meth abuse, and the withdrawal effects of Methamphetamine in this paper, and what to do if you suspect someone you know is using meth.
While there are a large variety of illegal drugs out on the streets currently, one of the most well-known is methamphetamine. Most people today know of the drug, but do not understand how it came into existence. Knowing the history is important, because it can help one to better grasp how it came to be and why so many people today use the drug. Methamphetamine is a stimulant and it is extremely addictive and very powerful. Unfortunately, there are many people in various countries throughout the world that are addicted to this highly harmful drug. It is awfully difficult to recover from a methamphetamine addiction, but it is not impossible if one has the right resources, help, and support group. Many individuals do not seek the help that they need, however, and the harmful addiction often times leads to an overdose, often resulting in death. In order to make a difference in our communities, or to simply be able to understand what an addict is going through, it is a very wise idea to know the effects and background of methamphetamine. Understanding the drug’s past and how it effects the individuals will help one to better understand what the user is going through.
As we can see, the ingredients in the table above could be found in many common household items. Organic compounds such as methylamine, ethyl ether, benzene, methanol, and lithium aluminum hydride are extremely flammable so there is always a great chance for explosion to occur. Many methamphetamine labs in California and Missouri have used the Anhydrous Ammonia method or Shake and Bake method, a one simple step recipe where the yield of meth is around 95% and 10 minutes reaction period and it will need up to about 2 hours for the total time for preparation, production and cleaning up after the process is done (Garriott, 2011). The main ingredients for this production are pseudoephedrine (cold medicine), lithium, water, Coleman fuel, ice packs and an explosive device. Besides that, there are two other methods which are mainly used in methamphetamine production: the phenyl-2-propanone (P2P) method and the red phosphorous (red P) method (Scott & Dedel, 2006). However, Anhydrous Ammonia method is more popular because pseudoepherdrine can be easily obtained in cold medicine and the producing progress is quite simple and quick so this method can be applied in most of small scale clandestine methamphetamine laboratories (Scott & Dedel, 2006).
Drug use and abuse is as old as mankind itself. Human beings have always had a desire to eat or drink substances that make them feel relaxed, stimulated, or euphoric. Humans have used drugs of one sort or another for thousands of years. Wine was used at least from the time of the early Egyptians; narcotics from 4000 B.C.; and medicinal use of marijuana has been dated to 2737 BC in China.
