As we can see, the ingredients in the table above could be found in many common household items. Organic compounds such as methylamine, ethyl ether, benzene, methanol, and lithium aluminum hydride are extremely flammable so there is always a great chance for explosion to occur. Many methamphetamine labs in California and Missouri have used the Anhydrous Ammonia method or Shake and Bake method, a one simple step recipe where the yield of meth is around 95% and 10 minutes reaction period and it will need up to about 2 hours for the total time for preparation, production and cleaning up after the process is done (Garriott, 2011). The main ingredients for this production are pseudoephedrine (cold medicine), lithium, water, Coleman fuel, ice packs and an explosive device. Besides that, there are two other methods which are mainly used in methamphetamine production: the phenyl-2-propanone (P2P) method and the red phosphorous (red P) method (Scott & Dedel, 2006). However, Anhydrous Ammonia method is more popular because pseudoepherdrine can be easily obtained in cold medicine and the producing progress is quite simple and quick so this method can be applied in most of small scale clandestine methamphetamine laboratories (Scott & Dedel, 2006).
The Shake and Bake or “one pot” method is made by mixing anhydrous ammonia extracted from fertilizer, pseudoephedrine from cold tablets, water, and Lithium into a 2 little soda bottle. Therefore, it requires specialized training, detection and safety precautions which are missing at most clandestine meth labs because the cleanup and disposal step can cost a lot of money. The property may not be able to be properly decontaminated to limit the risks of spreading hazardous odors out in the surrounding areas (Garriott, 2011). The amount of hazardous material wastes produced is six times of the amount of methamphetamine after each production cycle. The manufacturers often dump their wastes in the backyard or open space in the surrounding areas such as river or streams (Scott & Dedel, 2006). The phenomenon of Methamphetamine use and distribution is rising in our country. With this growing problem, the state of Kentucky is right at the top of the list. Manufacturing alone has more than tripled over the past four years, in the state of Kentucky. Given the rural areas and large vacant buildings, Kentucky has quickly become a breeding ground for Methamphetamine. A necessary additive for production anhydrous ammonia is available at many farm stores in the state. This phenomenon is largely costing the tax payers, as well as, putting our future generation in jeopardy. Given statistical data on the increased use and manufacturing, a definite problem is noted.
The drug is sometimes used in combination with other party drugs, like Ecstasy and alcohol, which increases its risks, and can be lethal. GHB is most frequently illegally produced in home basement labs, usually in the form of a liquid that has no odor or color. It is known as a designer drug because it is specifically made for the purpose of getting people high.
Two effects of meth addiction are an increase in property crimes and an increase in the number of children entering foster career. Shockingly, half of the inmates in Portland jails were meth users, and meth addicts commit 80% of the property crimes in Oregon. These statistics show how meth can not only negatively affect an individual and a family, but a whole community. Meth is not only highly addictive it is easily "cooked" in homes across the country. Unlike some drugs, which are derived from natural sources, meth includes an array of dangerous chemicals. These chemicals can include battery acid, rat poison and motor oil.

This drug changes a person’s mental state by distorting the perception of reality to the point where at high doses hallucination occurs. Acid is derived from a fungus that grows on rye and other grains. It is semi-synthetic. It’s manufactured chemically in illicit laboratories, except for a small percent, which is produced legally for research.
Morphine is a highly addictive opiate psychoactive painkiller. It is often used before or after surgery to alleviate severe pain. Morphine acts by attaching to specific proteins called opioid receptors, which are found in the brain, spinal cord, and gastrointestinal tract. The drug was originally derived from the poppy seed plant before it was chemically enhanced and manufactured. Starting off, the drug was used to cure alcoholism and certain types of addictions. This didn’t last very long considering morphine was found to be much more addictive than alcohol. In the early 1900s, morphine was identified as a controlled substance under the Harrison Act. The Harrison Act was put in place to control morphine by making it only legal for those with a prescription for the drug to carry and use it. It is now considered a Schedule I&II drug, which basically defines the levels of enforcement against the drugs. At the time, morphine was the most commonly abused drug, because of its mind-numbing, and reality shattering capabilities.

The drug may be smoked in a purified form through a water pipe (freebassing) or in a concentrated form (crack) shaped into pellets or rocks and placed in special smoking gear. Despite today's abuse of the highly addictive drug, cocaine was intended for medical purposes. Pure cocaine was first extracted and identified by the German chemist Albert Niemann in the mid-19thcentury, and was introduced as a tonic/elixir in patent medicines to treat a variety of real or imagined illnesses. Later, it was used as a local anesthetic for eye, ear, and throat surgery and continues today to have limited use in surgery. In the video The Meth Epidemic (Byker, 2011), the narrator explains some of the contributing factors to the increased use of methamphetamine in the United States. The numinous euphoric high that this stimulant produces becomes increasingly appetitive to users. Meth addicts stay awake for days at a time when using the drug. The video expounds that throughout the years of popularity, meth had gone through drastic fluctuations in its purity. As the ingredients commonly used to produce the meth became scarce, so did the purity of the supply. In addition to the incredible purity of the drug, it became apparent that with the right equipment just about anyone could produce it. The increase in the amount of small meth lab operations is also said to have been a contributing factor to the spike in use throughout the United States (Byker, 2011).

Among the long list of effects is lost productivity, anxiety, depression, increased crime rate, probable incarceration, frequent illness, and premature death. The limitless consequences include the destruction to personal development, relationships, and families (Henderson 1-2). “Understandably, Americans consider drug abuse to be one of the most serious problems” in the fabric of society. And although “addiction is the result of voluntary drug use, addiction is no longer voluntary behavior, it’s uncontrollable behavior,” says Alan Leshner, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (Torr 12-13).
