I graduated from Oakland University in 2010 with Bachelor in Health Science. I have been working at Detroit Medical Center as Medical Technologist (MT) for last 5 years in Clincal Chemistry department. During my experience as a MT, I have realized the importance of the technology in the medical industry. Technology not only helps us to provide effective patient care, but also decrease costs for the provider and patient. With the use of technology, physicians’ orders are entered electronically on rather than on paper using Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE). Using paper costly, time consuming and can cause medical errors. With the introduction of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) which include all patient care data, medication information, their progress notes, lab results. The electronic records allows for the screening of potential medical or clerical errors and problems automatically. Everyday life in a hospital is complete and absolute chaos. There are doctors and nurses running everywhere to treat patients, ambulances coming through every so often, children and patients crying, and surgeons telling a family that their loved one did not make it. However, outside of all that craziness is an operating room (OR). A place filled with pressure, intensity, high hopes, and stress. There to help control the environment is a surgical technologist. While preparing patients for surgery, surgical technologists manage the equipment and operating room, follow the instructions of the surgeon, and ensure the safety of the patient.
I have been in healthcare for about 6 years now. I started off as a nutritionist in a hospital setting, working with patients of all health statuses. I worked closely with doctors to determine what meal plan would best suit each patient. I went to work day after day to meet a new group of patients who were previously admitted the night before; very rarely did I work long term with one particular patient. Although I enjoyed helping people change their eating habits and educating them on how to better their health, at the end of the day I felt like there was something missing; I wanted more.
For years now, the healthcare system in the United States have managed patient’s health records through paper charting, this has since changed for the better with the introduction of an electronic medical record (EMR) system. This type of system has helped healthcare providers, hospitals and other ambulatory institutions extract data from a patient’s chart to help expedite clinical diagnosis and providing necessary care. Although this form of technology shows great promise, studies have shown that this system is just a foundation to the next evolution of health technology. Healthcare professionals associated with medical billing and coding know the progress the technology has made so far. Growing up in rural Texas, you have to learn to care for the things that are important to you. There really is not much to entertain yourself with so many adolescents become vulnerable to trouble. Luckily for me, I grew up with the responsibilities that came with growing up on a farm. I had things to care for on a daily basis and for the longest time, the things I cared for most were animals. I exhibited livestock in my youth and this is where I spent the majority of my time. I would come home from football or basketball practice and go straight up to the barn to tend to my animals. Along with feeding and cleaning, I would often administer vaccinations and antibiotics when needed. Because of my interest in medicine and science coupled with my love for animals some could say that I was destined to become veterinarian. The major I chose, animal science, even supported that notion. However, it was not until the summer after my freshman year of undergraduate where I realized it was human medicine that my heart was yearning for.
I am a patient and caring person who enjoy helping people. My ambition to become a Diagnostic Imaging technologist developed when I was working at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. During this time, I worked as a temporary support worker who helped patients to attend their scheduled medical examinations at the Imaging Department.
