Has the media been reporting on suicides more often? Studies have shown that suicides are becoming a leading cause of death in young adults. Suicide is viewed as a taboo topic in society, which leads people to believe the media is glamorizing suicides. Suicides should be discussed more in the media or in classrooms because, more people need to be informed on suicidal behaviors to hopefully prevent further suicides from occuring.
Mental illnesses including depression and anxiety, are not discussed openly in schools, which can lead to teens commiting suicide. In the article, “Let’s Talk about Suicide”, the issue of discussing suicide is deliberated. For example it states, “And they are suffering- and sometimes dying- in silence because we

The article “We Need to Talk to Kids About Suicide Without Glamorizing It. Here's How.” exhibits the importance of consulting teens about suicide, and suicide in today’s media. For example in the article Gutman states, “...young people risk learning inaccurate information from inexperienced peers” (Deliee). This is an important issue because if suicide is not addressed in school or by an adult, a teen can learn false ideas about suicide. Celebrity suicides are shown on media more often these days and often times kids see these reports on the news and in newsletters. This allows adults to have the opportunity with adolescents so false ideas about suicide aren’t learned. Learning inaccurate information about suicide is dangerous, because kids run the risk of believing that suicide is the only option or that suicide will give a person more attention. However, if suicide is brought up by a parent or teacher in the classroom it will ensure that kids learn accurate information about suicide, potentially saving a life. Additionally in the article Zakeri states, “...it is important to emphasize the impact created by suicide…” (Deliee). In the media, celebrities who commit suicide receive a lot of attention from society. Since the media is open about reporting on suicides it is a starting point for the issue to be discussed, and show how the suicide is a forever event. By …show more content…
The article “Web Searches on Suicide Rose After Series Release,” argues that netflix series and television shows have an impact on suicidal rates in teens. For example in the article it states “...internet searches mirror real-world suicide rates, so suicide rates have likely gone up as a result of this program” (Murgia). The netflix show “13 Reasons Why” was released last year and since the release, the searches related to suicide on the internet rose. Society does need to view this as a serious issue, and needs to create awareness to monitor teens struggling with suicidal thoughts internet searches. However, although suicide topics on the internet rose, the show “13 Reasons Why” initiated the discussion of suicide. Additionally, in the article it states “School district personnel have observed an increase in youth at risk behavior…” (Murgia). Many teens in the U.S have access to Netflix and shows like “13 Reasons Why,” these shows can cause students to view suicide as glamorous and also cause sensitive students to have suicidal behavior. Although schools have more at risk students because of shows like this, it can be potentially be seen as a positive effect because, schools can now offer help to students with suicidal signs. Likewise, in the article it also states “...child psychiatrists have begun to see suicidal

Approximately, five teenagers attempted suicide each day (Haesler 2010 para. 1). The fact makes some group of people (especially the ones who are part of the society) concerned. Somehow, youth suicide will result in an unintentional sign for help (Carr-Gregg 2003, para. 1). Communities related to the victims will be affected mentally and they will feel grief, pain, and loss that are so great that it overcomes the economic ...

There have been many instances of suicide that have occurred in the past years at universities across the country, and since it is such a sensitive subject, there have not been nearly enough coverage as this topic deserves, considering this issue does not seem to be going away. When collecting data about suicide statistics, the age range is broken down as people ages 15-24, which spans most developmental years. Within this bracket are college-age students and this age-group has by far the most troubling statistics around it.
A 17 year old boy, Douglas Stewart, came home from school to find his mother lying on the sofa with a strained back. Being concerned for her he rubbed her back briefly then put on some easy listening music. Douglas then proceeded downstairs to his bedroom. Two of his friends came to the door. His mother waited to see if he would return to answer it; minutes later she answered and then yelled for him to come up. When he did not come, she went downstairs to get him. That is when she found him strangled and her son’s body dangling from the ceiling. This is a senseless tragic sight for a mother to endure. The mortality rate from suicide in 1996 showed 9.5 per 100,000 for 15-19 year olds. This also shows boys are four times more likely to commit suicide then girls. However, girls are twice as likely to attempt suicide. (American 1996) It is imperative to reverse this trend and in doing so we need to understand the characteristics, behaviors and events associated with youth suicide.
According to Phillips (1974), after the media overly publicize a suicide story, for 10-15 days after the story there is an increase in copycat suicides. In addition, there is a strong relationship between media reports on the suicide of famous people and copycat suicides. In fact, in the month right after the suicide of a famous person if the media publicize the suicide story, there is an increase in suicides (Wasserman, 1984). For example, during the month of Marilyn Monroe’s suicide there were 303 reported suicides related to Marilyn Monroe 's story (Stack, 2003). Finally yet importantly, media reports have the power to influence copycat effects on the method of suicide. Current research has a few examples of media reports of charcoal burning suicides that generated a copycat effect on subsequent charcoal burning deaths (Yang 2012). In addition, current research has interviews of patients who admitted to have tried to overdose with painkillers after having watched a television report of a case of suicide with painkillers. In other words, in the case of copycat suicide, media reports have the power to influence not only the decision to commit suicide but also the method of
Suicide is when someone takes their own life because they feel like there is no other way out or that they do not matter. In addition to the novel, a Netflix original TV series has come out based on the book. The executive producer Tom McCarthy explains, “...When you get a piece of material like this that’s actually about something? You take that seriously and you really hope the discussion begins and will continue.” Sheff echoed that sentiment in his Vanity Fair piece: “I’m proud to be a part of a television series that is forcing us to have these conversations, because silence really does equal death.” The TV show and book are forcing people to have conversations about suicide, which is helping society because as Sheff put it, silence equals death. With this in mind, making students talk about it at school could break down imaginary walls that divide students and mold schools into a more encouraging place for kids to go to. Also, Based off of the article ‘13 Reasons Why Controversial Depiction of Teen Suicide Has School Counselors Picking Up the Pieces’, The book Thirteen Reasons Why “has also been lauded for starting a conversation about suicide, which is the second leading cause of death among teens.” The quote clearly states that suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens, so this topic is very relevant to the school and the students inside of it. Individuals in society experience many changes that can make them feel overwhelm or feel accepted by their friends, family members and the rest of society. But there is times when people feel that they do not fit or feel welcome in their social group. Many people face their difficulties and achieve success others are do not have such luck. The individuals that are not lucky finishes their life committing suicide. It is a hopeful sign that while the incidence of suicide among adolescents and young adults nearly tripled from 1965 to 1987, teen suicide rates in the past ten years have actually been declining, possibly due to increased recognition and treatment.
Teen suicide as an extremely complex tragedy, that unfortunately happens all the time throughout the United States. There are friends, parents, and peers that are facing the misfortune of losing a young, close, loved one to suicide. Most people don't realize that adolescent suicide is common. They don't want to believe how often this occurs in the secure environment found in the small towns of America, as well as in its largest cities.
Suicide has become a critical, national problem and the extent of this is mind-boggling. Suicides have been proven to be one of the leading causes of death among college students. According to Webters dictionary “suicide is the act killing oneself on purpose”. It derived from the Latin sui, meaning “self”, and caedere, which means “to kill”. But this is just a definition, because an actual suicide holds different meanings to people such as tragic, shocking, a relief, a cry for help, a shame, heroic, the right choice, punishment, revenge, protest, anger, a mistake, desperate, hurtful and many more. But why do people, like college students who have their entire future ahead of them, simply give up hope and turn their heads away from life and commit suicide. There are several causes of suicide, recent incidents of suicide on college campuses, warning signs from a suicidal. I blame the Constitution and the United States law for not taking any hard initiative on the subject of suicide. I also impose the choice of the media, which is reflecting and portraying suicide towards a wrong direction. However most important questions remain: can the growing epidemic of suicide be solved, what are communities doing about it and what can they do to help?
can lead to suicidal thoughts, however those are not the only factors that contributes to self-harm behaviors. Society tend to think that the only way the internet can influence suicide is through online bullying, but the internet plays a much bigger role than that. The internet and its medias normalizes and influence suicidal behavior. The article, Societal Media and Suicide, talks about a web search that was conducted using the term suicide and terms associated with self-harm. The results were breathtaking.
A young, teenage girl sits with her friends, talking, laughing, and making jokes. She seems completely normal and happy, even. What people don’t know is that this is nothing but a mask covering the loneliness that seems to run through her veins, and the unexplainable sadness that never goes away. She fears speaking of it, of admitting the uncontrollable hatred she feels for everything about herself, so much that she contemplates ending it all. The fact is, suicide is the third leading cause for death in people under the age of twenty-five. Our country needs to stop seeing this as a casual thing. Depression, anxiety, and suicide in youth are real and serious issues that we need to be more aware of in today’s society.
