Context My best friend committed suicide, at a young age, after having read a story, written in a local newspaper, in which suicide was portrayed as a heroic way to die. After he died, he was wrongly labeled as a person with mental issues. Was his suicide directly related to a mental illness? Was his directly related to the story in the newspaper?
Suicide is often associated with mental illness issues. When it comes to understanding suicide, we feel hopeless and we label the suicide as a product of mental illness. Even if we do not know what triggers all suicides, there is a suicide, called copycat suicide, which seems influenced by reasonable factors other than mental illness. Copycat suicide is inspired by a suicide story that is often

According to Phillips (1974), after the media overly publicize a suicide story, for 10-15 days after the story there is an increase in copycat suicides. In addition, there is a strong relationship between media reports on the suicide of famous people and copycat suicides. In fact, in the month right after the suicide of a famous person if the media publicize the suicide story, there is an increase in suicides (Wasserman, 1984). For example, during the month of Marilyn Monroe’s suicide there were 303 reported suicides related to Marilyn Monroe 's story (Stack, 2003). Finally yet importantly, media reports have the power to influence copycat effects on the method of suicide. Current research has a few examples of media reports of charcoal burning suicides that generated a copycat effect on subsequent charcoal burning deaths (Yang 2012). In addition, current research has interviews of patients who admitted to have tried to overdose with painkillers after having watched a television report of a case of suicide with painkillers. In other words, in the case of copycat suicide, media reports have the power to influence not only the decision to commit suicide but also the method of
Let’s answer this question point blank: No, Chris McCandless, the ‘adventurer extraordinaire’, was not a suicidal human being. Was that too blunt? Got high off of it? Need explanation? Ok, well here are the reasons why; he knew the risks of taking the perilous journey to go “Into the Wild”, if he wanted to die, he would’ve done it sooner and the friendships that he made with people and his notebook (journal?) were far too strong. Those three reasons are why I think he didn’t end his life.

...be used for good just as much as it can be twisted for evil. The Sorrows of Young Werther is not the first example of copy-cat suicide nor is it the last but like The Catcher in the Rye it became a cultural phenomenon that influenced an entire generation of young people. It later influenced numerous psychological studies that opened up the discussion for the role media plays in sensationalizing suicide. What we have learned is in three separate cases is that the media prompted up an icon not only in life but after their death. Regardless of the background, books, television, movies, or music, these people touched peoples’ lives, but unfortunately it was done the wrong way. While we may not be able to fix what has happened we certainly can learn from it and change how we as well as the media handle suicides in the future and realize the power words really do have.
Nicole Dagan, age 19, has recently attempted to commit suicide. She was bullied at work and at home. The people she worked with would make fun of her because she was a teen mom of two kids and they believed she made a mistake by marrying her husband. Her family told her that her husband and children were a mistake and that her husband was cheating on her. She felt oppressive and snapped. She decided that ending her life would be easier than having to live with all the stress and bullying. Nicole attempted to commit suicide by cutting her throat from ear to ear; she failed at ending her life, but she is now in the hospital getting mental help.
Suicide is arguably one of the most major controversies. Suicide is the act of taking one’s own life as a result of a psychiatric disorder that sometimes is brought on with certain life threatening illnesses, stress, genetics, or other influences like physical or emotional abuse. There are many conditions that are known for having suicidal thoughts and ideation as a side effect; major depression, manic depression, or bipolar disorder, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and many more. Most suicidal individuals want to avoid emotional or physical pain by killing themselves to escape the pain they can’t bear and solve their insoluble problem. Sometimes, suicide is also done out of anger. Suicide may not be the answer to their problems, but sometimes suicide is the only way to escape.
Suicide is a sad story many people are reluctant to approach. But when somebody nearest to them kills themselves, they feel the compelling guilt of trying to understand the motive behind the death. It is a complex and rather devastating subject. Many who kill themselves can never come back to tell us what happened and why it did. Suicide takes an emotional toll on it's survivors and wreck havoc in the wake of the surrounding victims. What causes suicide is a probing series of many theories, and yet not one definitive answer. The prevention of suicide is also difficult to pinpoint, but only because the intent is unknown. The importance of researching the motives of the suicidal is essential to modern humanity as a whole, because in the era we live in, suicide rates are climbing faster than ever. Understanding the driving force behind suicide is what can help the field of social science to save the conscience mind of many people from self-destruction - and save their lives, and the emotions of their loved ones.
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death within the United States. It is the only act where a living creature will purposely end its own life. This paper will look at the primary causes of copycat suicides and risk factors that make an individual more susceptible to emulating a suicide. We will discuss suicide as a whole, taking a glance at the different general types of suicides, with a focus on suicide contagion and media influences, and delve into reasoning behind them. As well as go over current methods in research, treatments and contagion prevention guidelines.
Before elaborating on what causes suicide it should be understood what we mean by cause. The Oxford English Dictionary defines cause as “a person or thing that gives rise to an action, phenomenon or condition.” This essay will in part examine the methods employed by suicidal patients though this is secondary to whatever caused them to make this decision. The essay will consider the epidemiology of suicide (also regarding suicide clustering) followed by the potential genetic risk factors. This will be followed by the psychological factors such as depressive disorders, and finally the environmental risk factors such as low socioeconomic status and substance abuse.
Most everyone at some time in his or her life will experience periods of anxiety, sadness, and despair. These are normal reactions to the pain of loss, rejection, or disappointment. Those with serious mental illnesses, however, often experience much more extreme reactions, reactions that can leave them mired in hopelessness. And when all hope is lost, some feel that suicide is the only solution.
Suicide has become a critical, national problem and the extent of this is mind-boggling. Suicides have been proven to be one of the leading causes of death among college students. According to Webters dictionary “suicide is the act killing oneself on purpose”. It derived from the Latin sui, meaning “self”, and caedere, which means “to kill”. But this is just a definition, because an actual suicide holds different meanings to people such as tragic, shocking, a relief, a cry for help, a shame, heroic, the right choice, punishment, revenge, protest, anger, a mistake, desperate, hurtful and many more. But why do people, like college students who have their entire future ahead of them, simply give up hope and turn their heads away from life and commit suicide. There are several causes of suicide, recent incidents of suicide on college campuses, warning signs from a suicidal. I blame the Constitution and the United States law for not taking any hard initiative on the subject of suicide. I also impose the choice of the media, which is reflecting and portraying suicide towards a wrong direction. However most important questions remain: can the growing epidemic of suicide be solved, what are communities doing about it and what can they do to help?
A copycat suicide is when someone commits suicide in the same way another person did, therefore most people commit copycat suicides when a close friend or family member commits and they want to “go” in the same way. Every day when the media comes out with a new article on suicide, teens who have nothing better to do read it and every once in awhile take the idea and commit themselves.(Pohl 1) So when media informs the public on suicides it’s a harsh topic and they need to be more careful with their words otherwise, your already depressed and self-harming friend could be the next person to get an idea. As you can see media has a HUGE role in “copycat”
Often times when I heard the word "suicidal" I was curiously caused the person to do it. Growing up, I heard that people decided to commit suicide was because they "wanted attention, they wanted the easy way out, they were weak, they couldn't handle life, etc." Personally, I have significant people in my life that have felt like they wanted to commit suicide. So, this topic honestly is a difficult, yet, emotional one to discuss.
Multiple studies have been conducted on suicide rates of the general population after learning of the suicide of a celebrity. Research shows that suicides generally increase following the publication of suicide stories of famous individuals. It appears that the internet has amplified this phenomenon through the widespread access of multiple media types. One study was found to include data from a 1996 celebrity suicide in Korea. The celebrity was “one of the best singer/song writers in Korea” at the time, but appeared to not cause a significant increase in copycat deaths (Park et. al. 601). Korea did not have a widely developed internet infrastructure at the time of the singer/song writer’s suicide (Park et. al. 601). A majority of the other
Secondly, Understanding that suicidal does not mean unintelligent or a raving lunatic along with knowing how to approach someone who is or was suicidal can help to show suicidal people that they are not as isolated as they feel. There are many cases of suicidal where the victim was seen as normal. For example, “I was so normal that a few years later after not getting the help that I so clearly needed, most people would have never known that I was the one that it caused so much commotion late one night when I tried to jump from an overpass” (Why). Suicide is not something tangible. It is not something where “Suicidal” is written on their forehead. It is a state of being that many people suffer with and many people are silent about their
