In John Collier’s short story “The Chaser”, the title has a significant meaning, which means “a mild drink taken after hard liquor.” The significant meaning of this word is common throughout the scenario. In the story, a young fellow, Alan Austen, is energy infatuated with a young lady who is certainly not interested in him, goes to the foundation of a strange old man who has an unusual job in selling “magic potions.” He is edgy for her friendship, buys the potion without seeing the old man’s insight about all the more dangerous item and costly item he will definitely return for at a later date. Alan assumes that Diana means the world to him, yet as a general rule, he just wants a person to value him as much as he acknowledges himself. His perspective of affection pictures her yearnings being fulfilled by an association with him; sadly, she has no craving for him. “She will want to know all you do, all that has happened to you during the day. Raymond Carver's short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” leaves the reader feeling as if they have sat down at the table with a bottle of Gin and experienced first hand the effects of alcoholism and depression. In the original version of this story the “Beginners” Carver carefully crafts the many sides of an alcoholic personality developing strong knowable characters. The fundamental personalities are left fairly intact from the original version. It should be noted that the feelings that the reader are left with are due at least partially to the severe editing of the “Beginners” done by his editor and friend Gordon Lish. With this collaboration Carvers personal struggles still shine through but his intent of hope and recover from alcoholism were left mostly on the chopping block. Through many interviews and articles Raymond Carver make clear his personal struggles with alcoholism and how it has had an effect on his writing. INTERVIEWER: Where do your stories come from, then? I'm especially asking about the stories that have something to do with drinking. Carver: “At the very least it's referential. Stories long or short don't just come out of thin air.” (The Paris Review) The inner dialog and downward spiral of an alcoholic is experienced through the interaction between these personalities while discussing the topic of love. JA: I noticed recently you're using cliches in your characterizations, and I wonder if you're just observing, or recording the way a mind works. RC: It's there for a purpose; it's working for me, I think, not against me. Or at least I hope and assume this is the case!
Afterwards, she understood why he hated her after she prevented him from playing the stock market when their stock would increase on stanza 3, additionally demonstrating the equity between them. The internal conflict of alcohol addiction expressed by “used to spend my nights out in a barroom” is battled by the power of love that is conveyed through “’Cause there’s nothing like your love to get me high”. The conflict is solved for the speaker by his lover’s irresistible love that is compared as a parallel to an alcohol addiction. The speaker is talking to this person that saved him from alcoholism so that this person knows how he appreciates her and how there is no love that compares to theirs.

In short, this is a story of a random meeting of two strangers, and an attraction or feeling that is overlooked and ignored. A man describes a lady such that you could only envision in your dreams, of stunning beauty and overwhelming confidence of which encounters of the opposite sex occur not so very often. The mans attraction is met by a possible interest by the lady, but only a couple flirtatious gestures are exchanged as the two cross paths for the first time and very possible the last.
Alcoholism is the addiction to the intake of alcoholic liquor or the psychological illness and neurotic behavior resulting from alcohol dependency. There is a time and place for alcohol consumption in every culture. It’s a growing problem in America’s society and culture today. Revenge and trust are an issue in this short story. In Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado, Montresor symbolizes Poe’s alcoholism, whereas Fortunato represents himself, the man who is trying to reach satisfaction and eventually gets imprisoned by his minute habit. He is attempting to get revenge on someone else because of the insults he had been given. Revenge, trust, and alcohol are all apparent in today’s society, even though this was over 150 years ago, America’s population can still relate to it.
In a subtle way, Brush also makes the wife’s actions selfish. Even though her husband was wrong to react in the way that he did, she was also selfish in her actions. Clearly, her husband has a shy personality because “he was hotly embarrassed” (13) in front of “such few people as there were in the restaurant” (11). Using a couple of this age (“late thirties” (1)), Brush asserts that the wife should have known her husband’s preferences and been sensitive to them. The author also uses the seemingly opposite descriptions the couple: “There was nothing conspicuous about them” (5) and the “big hat” (4) of the woman. The big hat reveals the wife’s desire to be noticed.

Harry, a middle-class addict who is constantly affecting the trust and property of his mother Sara Goldfarb, is in what seems to be a dream-like, drug-induced romance with Marion. The novel begins with Harry taking his mothers television set, this being a monthly routine, to pawn it for drug money. Harry, Marion, and Tyrone C. Love share one of the same dreams as Tyrone states in the novel: "We could double our money. Easy We wont get stung out and blow it. We/d be cool and take care a business and in no time we/d get a pound of pure and jest sit back and count the bread" (9). Their ambitions are simple, obtain a "pound of pure", a significant amount of heroin, and sell it, save the money without blowing it on their own needs, and eventually be well off in the business. Each character has a different plan for their money. Harry and Sara to start a small coffee shop, and Tyrone to get established in "the business". The "pound of pure" later in the story becomes a metaphor for their dream, or a general concept of their ideal happiness. All four characters including Sara are looking to obtain a "pure" degree of happiness. And each in their own way will go to great lengths to obtain it.
Alan is not seeking just anyone to fall in love with him; he wants Diana to love him because he already is in love with her. Unfortunately, she does not share the same love for him.
In terms of drinking, the author uses it a means of showing just how much the two were not keen on having a meaningful discussion of their problems and how to solve them. Throughout the story as the two are waiting for the train, the author points out that they are both drinking alcohol as if they are trying to avoid the important discussions that they were having. As soon as the two set their foot in the station, they order large beers with the hope that drinking will take as much of their time as possible and would not give them the chance to communicate. The lack of commitment in the conversation about how to deal with the white elephant or the baby is shown when the girl requests to order more alcohol just to avoid having that discussion. The reader can also get the sense that the two are also drinking to forget about other problems that they seem to have throughout their relationship. This is depicted when the girl points out that the two do not really engage in other activities apart from the tasting out of new alcoholic drinks. One can also get the view that as a result of the drinking and the lack of communication between the two, the future is not that far for them and that they are bound to lead separate ways. Love is one of the most powerful emotions we hold inside as human beings. It ranges from a number of different meanings depending on how the word is being used. Rufus, shows us how love and its interpretation, can drive you to influence someone to do the unthinkable. Some of those meanings: desire, attachment, compassion, are the reasons why Alice ended up taking her life. This significant event was not only catastrophic to herself, but to her family as well. Showing how love has different meanings, depending on how a person is expressing and receiving it.
Furthermore, alcoholism, which is looked at critically by Joyce, is still a large social problem today. Ultimately, Joyce challenges the reader not to settle for the ordinary life. In conclusion, one of the great short stories of the 20th century is James Joyce’s “Eveline.” The story breaks away from traditional thinking by making the case for hazard or taking chances over order and the routine of everyday life. Like his other stories in “Dubliners” Joyce uses “Eveline” as an avenue to share his frustrations with early 20th century Dublin.
