3. The meaning of the name Pleiades It is noteworthy that Pleiades were connected with sailing. The idea that the name of Pleiades has been derived from the name of their mother, i.e.: name Pleiades means “daughters of Pleione”. However, in reality the name of the star-cluster seems to have been derived the verb πλεῖν “to sail” because of the cluster's importance in delimiting the sailing season in the Mediterranean Sea: “the season of navigation began with their heliacal rising” (Pleiades). The idea that Pleiades has been derived from the name of Pleion is nothing else, but a very naïve attempt to explain the origin of the name and actually it is nothing else, but so called folk etymology (Hard 2004: 518). 4. Possible interpretation of Maia/Maja deity …show more content…
The fact that Maja is connected with Pleiades in ancient Greek mythology means that initial Minoan Maja could also be protector of sailors. In this context use of name Maja in an incantation against a disease is completely logical since seafaring was very important activities of Minoan people, and so a deity that was protector of sailors evidently was considered as a mighty one and could also be an effective protector against other troubles. The fact that name Maja was written with determinative “god”, but not “goddess” in Egyptian papyrus while in late Greek mythology Maia is a goddess can inspire certain speculations about initial gender of the deity. There can be the following possible interpretations: a) Egyptian who wrote down the incantation simply didn’t care much about initial gender of this Minoan deity; b) Egyptian who wrote down the incantation thought that such serious deity, i.e.: protector of sailors and healer could be only god, but not a

There have been different significant meanings about the Venus of Willendorf, which is fertility, good luck, and a mother goddess. The Venus of Willendorf statue was found at Willendorf, Austria in 1908. It is 4 3/8 inches and made between 28,000-25,000 B.C.E. It was made from limestone with a tint of red orchard. It has an abstract body of a nude woman with enlarged parts. She has little hand that overlap over the breast, and appear to have no feet. There is no face on the head, but it appears to be a cap or maybe curls on the head.
Medea is frequently associated with images of violence and rage. She’s wild in the wild. Hate’s in her blood, he said. She feeds her rage. Stormclouds of anger.”
The famous walled city or Uruk in ancient Sumer is the oldest polytheistic culture to be documented. Uruk worshiped a pantheon of gods and goddesses such as the warrior goddess Ishtar, patron of the city, Anu, father of the gods and Shamash, god of the sun and of justice. The first and most obvious piece of evidence for the presence of elastic gender roles and female power is the fact there are both gods and goddesses in this Sumerian religion. Rather than a male dominated powerhouse in the heavens, Uruk recognized the goddesses as an equally powerful, and active, force in the cosmos. In the epic of Gilgamesh, goddesses appear to be a more dynamic force than some of the gods in the story. Gilgamesh, the protagonist of the epic, purportedly “two-thirds divine and one-third huma...
Poseidon, the great Greek ruler of the sea , horses and the earthquakes. His ancestry comes from the family of the Olympians that roamed the world in 2200 B.C . With the father of Cronus and mother of Rhea and having the famous brother of Zeus. Who fortunately saved him from being ate by his notable father ,Cronus. How did people revere their gods differently among three civilizations? Did they worship with the same general intent? What were gods’ role(s) in people’s lives? A brief exploration into the religions of Egypt, Greece, and the Hebrew people may bring insight to these questions. Although the main idea of higher beings remains constant throughout societies’ religion, their form of presence in people’s lives varies. I will present the relationship between the leaders and the gods, as well as resemblance to monotheism and systems of government.
Greek history is full of myths and legends, stories of Gods, Goddesses, heroes, villains, and everything in between. These stories have been told over and over again, and through time the versions have changed. Not only has time taken a toll on these stories but also the culture that these stories are. introduced into the world of. One of the more famous stories is the one about Medusa.
Greek mythology had many gods and goddesses, each symbolize a thing and had certain abilities, included Poseidon, the Olympian god controlled the sea. He is cruel and outrageous just like his father’s temperament. Malcolm Day stated “a role he performed with consider violence. The sea god’s rages were terrifying, especially when he stirred up the waves with his magic trident, a gift from the Cyclopes. Poseidon also caused earthquakes.” (Malcolm Day 29). Poseidon had other terrible power like change shape to deceive people. He’s used the power to do a wicked thing. Thomas & Hudson, illustrated as “When Demeter turned herself into a mare in order to avoid the attentions of Poseidon, his metamorphosis into a stallion enabled him to fulfil his desire.”(72). With his magnificent power, he’s used to do relen...
Thesis statement: In this research, I will investigate the basic concepts of the Egyptian mythology and its gods.
People of the ancient world often had questions about their existence and how life and people came to be on earth. Most ancient people answered these questions through religion. The Sumerians were the first important group of people to inhabit Mesopotamia and they were known to practice a form of worship called polytheism, which is the worship of several gods. Mesopotamians associated different gods with natural events, emotions, and other occurrences. Their main deities included An (the god of the heavens), Enlil (Lord Storm), Enki (god of wisdom), and Nihursaga (the mother of all living things)(p.22). The Mesopotamians believed that the gods controlled all of the events and occurrences in life. An ancient text called “Creation of Man by the Mother Goddess” (p.34) helps us understand how the M...
This essay will compare and contrast Greek mythology’s The Theogony by Hesiod and the Babylonian creation story found in the Enuma Elish. Both creation myths start off with an empty universe in a formless state. Two chief god entities materialize from this state of nothingness, one represented as a male and the other as a female.
Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet was set in a generic 19th century European setting that kept a modern and ancient look from distracting the content. The production design was eye-catching during each and every scene, which was a necessity to include, seeing as though it was a four-hour film. I felt as though the direction accomplished the heavy task of making it a movie rather than a version of the play. The majority of Hamlet is based on interior monologue and lacks intense battles, which makes it a tad more challenging for the director, however Branagh seemed to put the nail in the coffin with each and every decision he made for this film. Branagh’s Hamlet was the first uncut film version of Shakespeare’s masterpiece.
Religion was very important to the ancient Egyptians the believed in many gods, meaning they were polytheistic.
