Me Talk Pretty One Day is an essays collection by David Sedaris, prominent American comedian and author, that explores his identity through stories of his childhood, cultural background, sexuality, and family. These factors shaped who he is today and reflect on the how he managed to make his way to find his place in the world. One of the major revolving themes throughout the collection is the relationship between Sedaris and language. This relationship represents his obstacle of speech impairment in his childhood in Go Carolina and his French language class in Jesus Shave which emphasize Sedaris’s inability to conform to or use the language spoken by the people around him. While I concede that Sedaris’s used of the language barrier is to show the issue of stereotyping of homosexual men, but on closer inspection, Sedaris’s essays are highlighting the challenge of communication with their surrounding that children, and even adults, often have to learn in order to fit into society. The importance of language is much more than communication, it is also a way for individuals to understand and empathize with each other. We can see that Sedaris thinks that language skills are needed for meaningful contact with others, as those with better language skills tend to enjoy more social recognition. For example, in Go Carolina Sedaris mentions how in his therapy session he “saw no popular students… obviously, there was some connection between a sibilate s and a complete lack of” social recognition (9). It was impossible to spot popular students among his fellow classmates, just “boys like me” who are outcast and different (Go Carolina, 9). This problem imposes multiple obstacles on the individual. People who feel insecure when communicating often suffer from anxiety communicating with other people. In order to survive, many have to adopt resources from their surrounding to overcome these challenges similar to Sedaris who picks up dictionary in order to avoid the S word. Other, however, may avoid speaking completely and, consequently, they have to deal with social isolation and inability to engage with others. Sedaris demonstrates in Jesus Shave that just as it is extremely difficult for foreigners to try and assimilate to French-speaking culture, those who can’t speak the language in the way that fit the expectations of society will remain a foreigner to that culture. Inability to understand each other due to language barriers can create a disparity between individuals.
Sedaris’s inability to speak the language is also subtly hinted in Genetic Engineering where we are shown the distance between his world and his father’s world. His father, an engineer, speaks the language via a technical lense, while Sedaris does not. This irreconcilable difference led to the situation where Sedaris “tried to creep by unnoticed” (36) which goes show how disconnect in communication led to avoidance or social isolation. A similar event also occurs in Go Carolina when Sedaris mentions that his fellow speech therapy classmate “were all a little quieter” after realizing the “problem” with how they speak (12). In Jesus Shave, the language barrier became the main obstacle for Sedaris to convey his beliefs to someone different from him. This not only shows his inability to connect with others around him due to language but how it leads to conflict with his teacher in accepting French culture. Ultimately, it is impossible for an individual to have a sense of belonging or connection with others if he or she does not speak the language as it is one form of identity that is communicable to
others.
Jimmy Baca’s story “Coming into Language” describes his emotional childhood and what he went through while in prison. At seventeen Baca still didn’t know how to read or write. Throughout the story, he shares his struggle with language and how prison eventually brought himself to learn how to read and write. Jimmy Baca then uses examples in his story explaining how he admired language and used it to free himself from the cruel world he grew up in.

Within his short story, Sedaris gives us many examples of the shame he felt because of his sexuality. One example of the shame he felt would be on page 84. He states that if he would have won a contest that gave away cash as a prize, he would have visited a psychiatrist who could help cure him of his homosexual thoughts. He stated that he would resort to "electroshock, brain surgery, hypnotism- I was willing to try anything" (Sedaris, 84). This example shows the shame Sedaris felt for being gay. He stated he would have done ANYTHING to help cure him of his homosexual thoughts.
Chang Rae-Lee, author of "Mute in an English-Only World," moved to America from Korea when he was only six or seven years old. He adopted the English language quickly, as most children do, but his mother continued to struggle. "For her, the English language…usually meant trouble and a good dose of shame and sometimes real hurt" (Lee 586). It is obvious, though, that his mother was persistent in her attempt to learn English and deal with her limited culture experience, as Lee accounts of her using English flash cards, phrase books and a pocket workbook illustrated with stick-people figures. Lee sympathetically connects with the audience through his mother, and forces them to make a personal conclusion when he ends the article with a lingering question in the reader’s mind; what if they had seen her struggling? Would they have sat back and watched or stepped up to help?
In the novel, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Sedaris has used various literary terms which followed the use of a clear tone. This is clearly depicted with the author’s choice of words, as well as, figurative language. This demonstrates the author’s talent for casually laying out the absurdities of his daily experiences. In the novel, Sedaris has used a depressed tone. He explains how he is depressed by the French instructor. He explains that he is not alone to be belittled, but others also experience a similar attitude from the teacher, during the time they spent in class (Sedaris 13). He explains that the instructor wanted to put everyone down. For instance, he understood only half of what the teacher said, and that the first day that she was in class was very depressing (11). Sedaris also narrates that when the teacher asked that ‘has every one apzkiubjxow, it was very startling because he had not been asked the question for a while and realized that she did not understand the alphabet (11). The author states that the teacher always asked that ‘were you always this palicmkresis (15). It is clear that Sedaris employs nonsense letter arrangements, in order to replace the words that he could not understand (Sedaris 15). Through this, he relates his feelings with what the teacher said and this created pity for him and a mutual understanding (Sedaris 15). This demonstrates a depressed tone.
Language is an important part of who we are. It influences the way we think and behave on a great scale. However, sometimes it is forced upon us to go in different directions just so we can physically and mentally feel as if we belong to the society in which we live in. Just as we see in Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” and Richard Rodriguez’s “A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood”, both authors faced some challenges along the way by coping with two different languages, while still trying to achieve the social position which they desired.
Throughout Richards early childhood development he quickly understood that in order to succeed in America he would have to learn to confidently speak in English. Richard is Hispanic American and although he was born in America, Spanish was the only language that he was exposed to as a young child. He grew up in a home where Spanish flowed freely, but he soon realized outside of his home the language that he primarily knew was foreign. His parents spoke fluent Spanish along with all of his relatives. The brief encounters he experienced of his parents speaking English were only in public places and the proficiency was very poor. Rodriguez’s home was as a safety net for him and his Spanish speaking family with they are his only real connections to the outside world. It wasn’t until Richards encounter with his teachers that he and his family was heavily impressed on the importance of developing a public language. Having an understanding will determine whether or not one will have an indulgent of language. As Berry states, “illiteracy is both a personal and a public danger. Think how constantly "the average American" is surrounded by premeditated language, in newspapers and magazines, on signs and billboards, on TV and forever being asked to buy or believe somebody else's line of goods.” If a person reads a newspaper and can’t understand what’s written, it’s definitely going to be a personal danger. Now when that person is asked a question about the news spread or what a product does that is shown in a magazine, if one can’t understand what’s scripted that same person won’t able to clarify it and that’s public danger. Even if the product looks good in a magazine or billboard, but if one can’t understand what the product does than he or she won’t be able to purchase the item. Majority of the Americans watch debates on TV and if one person doesn’t understand anything that the candidates are saying, then that person will have a hard time conversing with family members or even colleagues. Tan’s essay does more than just illuminate the trouble with language variations; her essay features a story of perseverance, a story of making a “problem” harmonize into a “normal” life. Almost like a how-to, Tan’s essay describes an obstacle and what it takes to go above and beyond.
