The ad is exuberantly promoting three cheeseburgers that the fast food chain is attempting to sell. In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
When people think of both tasty and quick food, they often think of fast food. McDonalds fries are some of the most iconic in the food industry, as they have been around for 70 plus years. This ad aims to resemble the iconic McDonalds fries but it puts its own spin on it by having different vegetables in its place instead. It offers carrots, peppers, as well as other vegetables as healthy alternatives to the beloved fries. Dallas Farmers Market is showing us that there are healthy and cheap alternatives to fast food fries.
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In Daniel’s research, among 75 Boston-area parents, those rich families value children’s healthy diet more than food wasted when children refused to accept those healthier but
The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
In his webisode entitled ‘Alton’s Syrup Primer’, Alton Brown presents various types of syrups with a wide range of properties as an introduction to their uses in baking. As he begins to talk, one of his most noticeable characteristics is that his pace is distinctly faster than the average conversation; he maintains this throughout the entire clip. Also of note is his posture: bent in half with his elbows resting on the table, leaning forward towards the camera. Alton Brown’s pace and body language are tools that he uses in order to keep the viewer engaged and comfortable. Because the video is meant to be instructional - as evident by the use of the word ‘Primer’ in its title - its intrinsic goal is to inform, and if the viewer is engaged then
In Robert Kenner’s documentary film, Food Inc., the purpose is to inform Americans the reality of the food industry. The film illustrates the malevolent side of the food industry rather than an advertised image. Compelling images are used to show the horrors of the food industry such as the visuals of innocent animals being slaughtered and mistreated by the second. The claims that the film asserts have further expanded the ominous image of the food industry. Food inc. portrays a warning for Americans about what they are really eating, one can take a stand for better and safer foods.
In the article “Food for the Soul”, the author Nikolas Kristof endeavors to persuade his audience to believe and align with his opinion – industrialized farming is soulless and more emphasis should be placed on family farming. The article was written in the opinion section of the New York Times and contains exactly what was intended – the author’s opinion. However, Kristof was effective at achieving his purpose as his article was peppered with all three appeals. Of those appeals, however, ethos is used in an interesting way, entangling Kristof’s audience into agreeing with his opinion.
Looking through “@Wendys” Instagram page, I managed to select 3 of their images that best represent the peak of their methods of advertising. Pathos appears to be one of the focal points going along with the application of building a connection with the audience among the posts. Moreover, the uplifting and humorous tones used throughout the images send a message about their brand and how they like to carry themselves. By being “hip” or using terms that appeal to the modern youth, they just seem to have the perfect formula for advertising in today's society. While it is common for fast food chains to use humor as a way of advertisement, “Wendy’s” seems to be taking it a step further tailoring to a more socially motivated audience, the youth.
The McDonald's’ commercial “He Loves Me” uses an even balance of rhetorical appeals to advertise and sell the atmosphere and lifestyle that comes with them. This is portrayed in the commercial by using pathos, logos, and ethos in a cute love story to convince the viewers to go to McDonald's’. The commercial uses ethos by creating a friendly aura and selling the type of lifestyle that comes with getting McDonald's' food. It uses logos by stating that going to McDonald's will make extraordinary things happen and your life will change. Pathos is most definitely shown from the second the commercial comes on by starting the commercial with mellow, welcoming music and a cute story; viewers are almost instantly captivated. “He Loves Me” effectively uses the rhetorical appeals ethos, logos, and pathos through a story to persuade the viewers to go to McDonald's.
The Satirist, Robert Harris wrote a series of quotes called the “The Purpose and Method of Satire”, I say that they fully explain the true meanings behind what the Satirist is really trying to announce in their piece. Robert Harris says “The best satire does not seek to do harm or damage by its ridicule, unless we speak of damage to the structure of vice, but rather it seeks to create a shock of recognition and to make vice repulsive so that the vice will be expunged from the person or society under attack or from the person or society intended to benefit by the attack (regardless of who is the immediate object of attack).” I say this really speaks an imperative
Accordingly, the ability to capture the attention of younger generations is one of the essential strong points of oral stories being online. This publishes the words, and though many believe that it could mean having your thoughts no longer belong to you, I see it as a way to reach different people without having to speak to deaf ears; “Words are not objects to be wasted. They represent the accumulated knowledge, cultural values, the vision of an entire people or peoples” (Dickinson, Pp. 323, 1994). With this in mind the digitalization of these words allows it to reach the audience it needs the most without them being overused or forgotten. Through oral to written to digitalized words the stories told still hold similarities and oral traditions, throughout King’s speech uses repetition to tell his truths and ensures to use a circular method in his storytelling.

Coffee has a plethora of different flavours, from fruity and light to earthy and bold. However, they all have the same effect of waking us up and making us feel warm inside. Similarly, there are many styles of music, such as R&B, pop, rock, hip hop, classical, and jazz, that bring with them different flavours, feelings, and themes. Nonetheless, all music is a form of self-expression and speaks to the soul.
