Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a structure of the needs of people. The order of this structure is in the shape of a pyramid, with Survival at the bottom as the foundation, Safety & Security next, Belonging after that, Esteem next, and finally Self Actualization at the top of the pyramid. How it works is that you cannot have one part of the Hierarchy without the one below it, so you have to have survival in order to have Safety and Security. “The Pursuit of Happiness” is a movie that very closely follows Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Safety and Security means that you have a job, money, things you own, and are healthy. You cannot have Safety and Security without having Survival. An example of Safety and Security in “The Pursuit of Happiness” is when Chris gets the internship at Dean Witter. While Chris may not be paid for his internship, if he gets the job he will make over $800,000 a year. Chris has to work as hard as he possibly can, while trying to take care of his son, by himself, jumping back and forth from homeless shelter to the subway floor. Esteem is how you feel about what you do, and how you feel about yourself. Typically, people who have a low self esteem do not work well and are very irritable and depressed. I would not say that Chris had low self-esteem in “The Pursuit of Happiness” but for most of the movie it was not very high. After Chris was told that he got the job at Dean Witter, he went out and made a multi-million dollar deal with the owner of a fortune 500 company CEO. After he made this deal, Chris finally knew that he had the money and the resources to support himself and his son very well and this caused a rise in his self-esteem.
