Masculinity in the 21st century is defined by the ability to protect and defend others around oneself physically rather than emotionally. The measure of one's masculinity is, at first glance, judged by appearance and rarely judged by anything other than physical characteristics.
The notion of masculinity has greatly affected men of all ages. Paul Theroux states that “femininity-- being lady-like-- implies needing a man as a witness and seducer; but masculinity celebrates the exclusive company of men” (Theroux 378). The position of the strong man who will protect a woman no matter what is still very much alive, whether we realize it or not.
