Mary Ann Evans is one of these many people. She was 5’5”, 42 years old, and over two-hundred pounds. She became desperate and came to Dr. Robert Atkins to help her with her weight loss and health problems. Evans had tried other diets and failed repeatedly. Her health was definitely at stake at this appointment with Doctor Atkins. With a blood pressure of 160/100 (normal is 120/60), it was time for a change. Atkins prescribed his low- carbohydrate diet to reverse her health problems and to lose the weight that had been her enemy for years. He eliminated the carbs in her diet to nearly zero grams a day. She exclaimed in “Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution” that, “By the second week, I realized I felt really good. I had a lot of energy than I’d had on the old diet, and I wasn’t hungry” (13). Evans lost ten pounds in sixteen days and just after an additional three weeks she had lost 21 pounds and had a blood pressure of 120/78. She did not stop until she reached her goal of 140 pounds after only nine months on the Atkins’ diet. There are many success stories like this one that prove the low- carbohydrate diet is very efficient (“New Diet Revolution” …show more content…
There was a study done on 19 obese people to test whether low- carbohydrate or low- fat was most effective with weight loss. Kevin Hall, a metabolism researcher, ran this trail on cell metabolism to discover the truth about which is the most beneficial. The group was separated in two, with one one low- fat and the other on low- carbohydrates. He found that low- fat participants actually lost slightly more weight than the low- carb participants. Though not by much there still was a little difference

Mary MacKillop was born in Fitzroy, Melbourne on January the 15th 1842. She was the first child to Alexander MacKillop and Flora MacDonald. Mary was one child out of 8 and spent most of her childhood years looking after and acting like a second mother to her siblings. The MacKillop family were quite poor so at the young age of 14, Mary got herself a job as a governess and as teacher at a Portland school. All the money Mary earned went towards her families everyday living. While working as a governess, Mary met Father Julian Tension Woods. By the time Mary had reached the age of 15 she had decided that she wanted to be a nun. She also wanted to devote her life to the poor and less fortunate. So upon meeting Father Julian Tension Woods she told him her hopes and dreams, and together they decided to set up a school. In 1861, they worked together and opened Australia's first free Catholic school. At the time only the rich could afford schooling. But at the school Mary opened anyone was welcome. Mary was a great teacher and became very popular within the community. Although Mary was very pleased with her work she still felt a religious calling. So Mary and Father Woods started their own order, 'The Sisters of St. Joseph.' In 1867 Mary then moved to Adelaide where she opened another school. Before long there were 17 schools open across Australia. Mary's followers grew and by 1909 she had followers all over Australia. Mary later died on the 8th of August 1909.

Her life was one of privilege but the wealth of her family did not prevent her from experiencing segregation and the humiliation of Jim Crow laws. While traveling on a train her family was sent to the Jim Crow car. This experience, along with others led her to realize that racial injustice was evil. She saw that racial injustice and all other forms of injustice must be fought.

One of the slaves on the Van Lew plantation, Mary Elizabeth Bowser went on to be much more than just a slave.
Not only do low-fat diets not work but they are dangerous towards our body. Our body needs certain fats to sustain energy and support cell growth. Low-fat diets may worsen HDL cholesteric and triglycerides. Because low-fat diets have not been successful towards many people, they turn around to face another lie. They begin to abandon the idea of taking low-fat diets and turn to high-fat diets. The super-high-fat Atkins diet or zone and sugar busters diet which are just as flawed as the low-fat diets. Many people find it hard to lose weight and even on these diets they tend to still gain weight. Many of the reasons why diets high and low in fat or carbohydrates don’t work are because they are not accurate. They are hard to keep up so they eventually stop the diet. They set goals that seem almost unrealistic and the processes of keeping the diet seem even harder than taking the weight off. Obesity has become a big epidemic in America. Americans tend to look for the easy way out. Getting on a diet that seems like a good idea without realizing how unrealistic it can become. How it promises to make you lose 5lbs a month if you stay committed. Lies. The narrow-minded focus on fats has been a failure that seems to have worsened the problem of obesity. The best way to keep the body safe is to avoid smoking, eating right and exercising. These healthy lifestyles will change the course of the death sentence that most Americans carry upon
The less severe disadvantages surrounding the diet consist of physical weakness, low energy level, slower reaction times, headaches, and dehydration. These less dangerous, yet clearly relevant reactions are due to the elimination of carbohydrates from the diet. Blood sugar levels become very low when carbohydrates are not ingested, causing physical pain and weakness as well as a slower reaction time. Headaches also occur as a natural response mechanism that act as signals for the body that carbohydrates are needed in order to prevent further problems. Moreover, when the body breaks down stored fats t...

The girl once in high school struggling with her weight has now learned the value of a low carb diet and what it can do for her body and her health. “The low carb diet was most beneficial for lowering triglycerides, which are the main fat- carrying particle in the bloodstream” (The Nutrition Source). Therefore, targeting the fats in one’s body is one of the most important aspects of the low carb diet. If one can lower the triglycerides in their system this will guarantee that the diet has more of a chance of working correctly ensuring weight loss. When trying to accomplish this task The Nutrition Source suggests that it is good to try to include some fruits, vegetables, and whole grains essential vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Although some might be quick to analyze the access of ease to this diet, it is easily attainable if one has a plan set up to how they will go about starting a low carb
In 1942, Margaret Walker won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award for her poem For My People. This accomplishment heralded the beginning of Margaret Walker’s literary career which spanned from the brink of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1930s to the cusp of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s (Gates and McKay 1619). In the last couple of decades, dieting trends have astronomically increased. The average dieter has trained his or her ears and eyes to react to the word ‘fat’. Low fat, reduced fat, fat free- these are all words that until recently have set alarms off ringing in the typical dieter’s head. Recently, new vocabulary, such as ketogenic, ketosis, and low carbohydrate have stepped into the dieter’s world and questioned, or rather challenged, the ‘fat’ free method of dieting. So, after you have devoured the entire box of ‘fat’ free cookies perhaps you will ask yourself....WHAT ABOUT THE CARBOHYDRATES???
Compare and Contrast Low Carbohydrate Diets and Low Fat Diets The two most popular methods to lose weight are the low carbohydrate diets and the low fat diets. Both are in complete contrast when it comes to each diet’s food choices, the low carbohydrate diet which completely breaks the food pyramid limits a person to eating foods that are high in carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta and rice, while on the other hand, the low fat diet which follow the food pyramid limits a person to eat foods that are high in fat like meat, milk, and bean groups. Although each diet may sound very different from one another, they also share similarities. Both the low carbohydrate diet and the low fat diet claim that each is a good tool for weight loss.
The Atkins and the Zone Diet both share the idea that the reduction of carbohydrates in one's diet will result in weight loss. Our bodies burn both fat and carbohydrates for energy, but carbohydrates are used first. Once these carbohydrates are taken away our bodies naturally lose weight by burning stored body fat instead (www.webmd.com). Based on this knowledge, the Atkins Diet restricts carbohydrate intake to only 3 cups per day of leafy green vegetables. Fats and proteins make up the rest of the diet. Atkins does not restrict the amount of meats, eggs, and cheeses one eats a...
The Atkins diet is one of the most popular fad diets. Carbohydrates play an important role in the Atkins diet. This diet is based on keeping the carbohydrate level controlled, with a process known as ketosis (Akins par. 3). Because carbohydrates are the body’s primary energy source, keeping this level to a minimum causes the body to get energy from a different source. In the place of carbohydrates, stored body fat is burned. Carbohydrates also participate in insulin creation. Insulin is what turns the extra carbohydrates into fat. Therefore, if the body is getting fewer carbohydrates that means less insulin is being created. If less insulin is being created, then less fat is being produced resulting in weight-loss (Atkins par. 5). The Atkins diet is also a 4-phase diet. The first phase of this diet is known as the induction phase. This specific phase lasts for a minimum of two weeks. Along with this phase comes a twenty gram limit of carbohydrates, and no more. During this stage, the dieter is not allowed to eat any breads, starchy vegetables, grains, or fruits (Atkins par. 4). During this phase is when the process of ketosis takes place. Phase two of this diet is called the Ongoing Weight Loss phase. This phase consists of adding mo...
