Regression is a defense mechanism resulting in an individual returning to a childlike state to cope with unpleasant thoughts or stress. Regression occurs when an individual faces a particularly stressful or tense situation, and instead of handling said scenario in a mature and adult manner, an immature, childlike technique is employed to handle the anxiety. While a psychoanalytic analysis is more difficult given the subconscious nature of the tensions and resulting anxiety, there are several scenes through the movie that indicate Clark Griswold regresses to handle unpleasant and anxiety-inducing situations. In one example, Clark has been stringing lights on his house for hours, and upon attempting to light them comes to find that none of

The individualized educational plan (IEP) for Steve indicated that he was learning disabled, but did not specify the extent of his disability. Steve had an IEP for four years and each had indicated a counseling requirement. Upon conception the objective of counseling sessions was to provide Steve with someone to talk to because as per the IEP, Steve was voluntarily isolating himself from social interactions. Matters became awry last school year, when Steve presented with increasingly low attendance and constant arguments when he was present at school. As in Wood and Hollis (2000), “Not only are initial goals modified as treatment proceeds, but also others problems emerge; clients raise these problems for discussion, thus broadening the scope of treatment” (p. 327).
The process of manifest determination process answers the following questions: 1. Was the behavior caused by, or have any direct causal relationship to the student’s disability (Iowa Department of Education, n.d.)? 2. Was the behavior a result of the school’s failure to implement and/or follow an IEP (Iowa Department of Education, n.d.)?
