“A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who just tries to give back as much as possible and help people,” Debi Mazar. I fully agree with Mazar, as all true heroes do not just think of themselves, but they focus on others, looking to help. Heroism is taking others’ needs into consideration before your own, helping others in a multitude of ways, and sacrificing something―or yourself―for others. Examples of heroism are when people stand up for or help other people. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. was a major rights activist who grew up surrounded by racism. King decided to stand up against it; he was the leader and founder of multiple equality-based organizations, and led many peaceful acts of protest. Many people believe
Webster’s dictionary defines a hero as any man admired for his courage, qualities or exploits, especially in war. Some people attribute the term hero mostly to war. My personal definition of a hero is someone who takes a stand against evil or an unjust cause. The term hero can be applied to anyone, it isn’t necessary to save the world from explosion to be a hero. The act of standing up for a friend can also be called a heroic act.
What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. What starts as mere willingness becomes intense involvement." The business man, Oskar Schindler, demonstrated a powerful example
As Writer Mark Waid once said “Heroism is Heroism, regardless of the timeframe or backdrop.” Heroism is a thing that can be associated with the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton where a lot of characters do things that would be called heroic by most. Three heroes in the book are Darry, Dally, and Johnny.
Heroism entails several things; a selfless act, courage, or the accomplishments of bold and daring expeditions. A hero can also mean courage in the face of death. Others may view this type of hero as stupid, or a martyr. Every hero has faults and these faults along with heroic deeds make the man or woman; a hero, heroine.
Rebel, Merriam-Webster defines it as someone who opposes or takes arms against the government. Many Americans believe it is someone from the confederacy or someone who forcefully attacks someone or something they disagree with. This is especially common with the younger generations as most of what they see on the television and in movies is violence and governmental infiltration through violence. A large number of these children, adolescents, and young adults will never realize there is an alternative way of protest other than violence. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. found that way from the inspiration of Henry David Thoreau and his ways of transcendentalism.
It was there King meet Mordecai Wyatt Johnson (1891 – 1976) an American educator and pastor. He served as the first black president of Howard University, from 1926 until 1960. Johnson has been considered one of the leading African-American preachers of the early 20th-century. Johnson would traveled 25,000 miles a year throughout the country speaking principally on topics such as racism, segregation, and discrimination and his word become a source of great influence for the young Martin L. King. Year later both men spoke alongside each other on the subject of social justice. King was an gifted reader and was introduce to the works of great social reformers that include the work of Mohandas K. Gandhi. King identified with the philosophy of nonviolence resistance, which Gandhi had used effectively to make positive change in India. King was impressed with his research and saw how these ideas were not inconstant with his Christian
In my opinion, a hero is someone whose principal purpose, whether it be in one situation or over the span of their entire life, is to help others while simultaneously making the world a better place. When the word hero is brought up, the most prevailing image that comes to mind is superheroes like Batman and Superman. But I don’t think you have to have superpowers or even be well known in order to be a hero. There are people all over the world whose intention is to do selfless deeds and go out of their way for others without expectation of obtaining anything in return. These are the type of people I like to consider everyday heroes. They go through life just trying to be the best they can and trying to help as many people as they can. Whether
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” (www.brainyquote.com) Dr. King, a true inspiration, a true man, and a true hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an inspiration to me because he gave people freedom and equality. Without him, blacks and whites would of probably never been treated as equals. What would life be like without Dr. King in America’s history?
The topic I choose to talk about is Martin Luther King Jr. because of his strong wisdom and bravery. I really admire Martin Luther King’s way of handling things in life because when he was no longer allowed to play with his friends at an young age and also when he was sent to jail for leading a march through Birmingham he was always peaceful about things. The way he chose to look at people who disrespected him and his race was amazing because many people couldn’t do something like that. He showed the world that you didn’t have to condone in violence for you to get your point across or if you’re not treated fairly. Why does the world see Martin Luther King as the most valued American? The reason why I think he is so valuable is because he focused
Martin Luther King, Jr. lost his life trying to better the lives of African American people who, because of their skin color, didn’t have the same rights as white people in America. King was a man of integrity and passion with a vision of a desegregated society. He played a part in the Civil Rights Movements where he eventually went to jail because of his protesting, and he became involved in the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott.
Heroes, crime fighting people that save the world from bad guys and super villains. Some heroes might be like that, but not my hero. This man was a normal person that rose to a opportunity that he saw and took it. He help many people with their hardships of being treated differently. My hero is Martin Luther King Jr, he had many great ideas that changed history forever. I think that he did it all out of love not popularity and he did so in a peaceful way, therefore I think he is a great hero.
