Why Students Should be Able to Watch The Martian In School Do you ever have those days when you feel like you want to learn something new? Do you like action packed movies? Do you also like to learn visually? Well, The Martian is an amazing movie that is perfect for you. This movie is accurate in scientific aspects, and it will help kids who are visual learners. By viewing this movie, it is also giving students something more relaxing to do. Mark Watney, an astronaut on a space mission has been left behind on Mars all by himself. His crew had left him behind because they were under the impression that he had got stuck by debris and died. Mark has survived and the way he does it is incredible to see. The scenes on Mars are accurate in terms of their location. The place where Mark had landed on Mars is actually a real place on Mars today. That place is known as Acidalia Planitia. According to the Science vs. Cinema video, the space rovers were very accurate as well. NASA has rovers like the ones seen in the film today. Another aspect of accuracy is seen in the way the film captured the team working factor accurately in the crew. Teamwork is very crucial among astronauts and the way the crew in the film captured that is similar. The fact that people took their time and did the research to create this amazing film is incredible. The film and novel both also involve energy transformations. Learning about energy is part of the various topics you learn in eighth grade. “The RTG houses plutonium, catches the radiation in the form of heat, and turns in into electricity” (Weir 73). The movie would not only relate to the topic you are teaching, but along with that, the movie would give students a break. Instead of doing something highly focused, the movie would be a great way to extend the learning and it would give students something that needs less focus in class. “There will be days when students will be more focussed on their homecoming dance and game that night or the holiday that starts the next day than on the topic that day; while this is not an excuse to show a non-educational movie, this could be a good time to watch something on the topic you are teaching” (Kelly 2). In this quote it says non-educational movie, but the movie Martian is educational which makes the reason to view it even stronger. In my case, I did have quartelys and midterms this week, and I believe that I was very focused on those things.
