Career Reflection Paper I strive to become a marine biologist who studies the organisms in the ocean such as animals, plants, and their ecosystems, also observing, protecting, or managing marine organisms. Some subfields that are linked to the marine biology would be an invertebrate zoologist, ichthyologist, and the study of oceanography. Since the sixth grade, I would watch documentaries on National Geographic explaining our oceans and what may lie within them. It has always intrigued me to learn to learn about that 71% of ocean covering the Earth’s surface, whether it may be coral reefs, endangered organisms, or the terrible mistreatment of aquatic animals around the world. I believe to have the necessities as a future marine biologist but lack the ability to scuba dive (which is listed as an important skill). With these skills, you’re required multiple responsibilities when being a marine biologist. Consisting of writing reports or scientific papers on information that you’ve inquired through research, observing and collecting specimen underwater for lab research data, and analyzing certain species and how human involvement effects their environment. The typical work conditions for a marine biologist varies between the actual job they’re provided, whether it’s working for an aquarium or the government. There are times you work independently or as a team as small as four or up to thirty. Doing on-site field observations of aquatic animal research which requires the skill to scuba dive, and studying their health in certain ecosystems by assessing pollution or other man-man disasters. There are marine biology programs all over the U.S. like Boston University’s Marine Program and UCSB’s Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology, but Georgia State University not being one. Salaries for marine biologists have a wide range depending on location and company. It can be as little as $35,000 up to $121,000 and average in the U.S. to be $70,000. The steps required to advance as a marine biologist all consists or how passionate you are about what you study, mastering all the skills required, and mainly discovering what’s unknown to others. The employment lookout for marine biologists is highly competitive because the supply of this field far exceeds its demands and government jobs being limited. Other employers such as aquariums, colleges and universities, and private research institutes are easier to find but lower paying.
