The planet’s climate is constantly alternating but is currently unstable and compared to the past, the current warming is rapidly increasing. Due to climate change, there in an increased amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere which causes the oceans to become more acidic. Coral bleaching threaten coral reef habitats worldwide and cause a high deterioration of local biodiversity. As time progresses and global warming continues, it is expected that bleaching will worsen. However, it is unpredictable what will specifically happen. As temperatures rise, bleaching events are now expected to last longer than the average pace. Conservation biology and environmental science journal, Global Change Biology, discovered that “under the RCP8.5 climate change scenario, the global suitability for coral reefs may increase up to sixteen percent by 2100...In contrast, in its current range, coral reef suitability may decrease up to forty-six percent by 2100” (Forecasted Coral Reefs, 2479). Coral reefs are home to over a million species. However the declining number of coral reefs may lead to its extinction, considering the immense number of species that confide in coral as their habitat. These reefs are the foundation for a variety of fish species that rely on corals. However they are amongst the most vulnerable to climate change. Not only do corals provide shelter but also, corals serve as a food source for marine animals. It is thought that rising sea levels will lead to some reefs to drop below their ideal water level. If the depth is too deep, the amount of sunlight reaching the corals is narrowed down making it challenging for the coral’s algae to photosynthesize. The corals’ skeletal density risk reduction making the corals weaker and vulnerable to storms. Coral Reefs are said to be the “tropical rainforest” of the sea. They are home to over 25% of all marine life (http://coralreefalliance.org.stories/storyReader$77). Over the past few decades they have been subjected to destructive anthropogenic practices. Some of the major threats to coral reefs include sedimentation, water pollution, harmful recreational activities, and global warming. All of these things cause stress on corals and can potentially cause mortality. Corals are made up of two parts, a polyp and zooxanthellae. A polyp is a calcerous body that grows from a hard part of the ocean floor. Zooxanthellae is a photosynthetic algae which lives in the polyp and provide energy for themselves and the coral. In many cases, corals undergo “bleaching,” which is a process where corals lose the zooxantheallae or chlorophyll pigment, and turn white (Wilkinson et all). After bleaching corals can survive for several months. It is possible for corals to recover by hosting more zooxantheallae, but it can take between 5 and 50 years for them to recover completely (Wilkinson et all, 1999).

Climate change and Global Warming are out of control. This means that, no matter what policies, processes or actions are implemented, the Earth as we know it will never be the same again. There is significant evidence to support this hypothesis. The dilemma becomes whether we can limit the damage and adapt to a new status quo or not. Rising sea levels and the damage caused by this phenomenon has irreversible impacts on coastlines worldwide. Damage to sensitive reef systems cannot be fixed. Thousands of species have become extinct over the last four decades as a result of changes in land use and as a result of global warming. Whether or not the millions of species can adapt and evolve to climate changes is debatable. As this brief overview will report, the human species is not adapting well to the changes. It must be remembered that increases in the levels of carbon dioxide are certainly responsible for the risk many species face, but so is the way land is used, e.g., rain forest destruction. Coral reefs are well known for their colorful array of marvelous sights including a parade of exotic flora and fauna. They are said to be the foundation for a quarter of marine species, and are a crucial support for human life as well. Everyone in the world today is experiencing the effects of global warming. These effects might be small now, but if we don’t protect our planet now then the consequences will greatly be increased.
