Monroe is most widely known for her beauty, charm, and striking blonde hair; but she is so much more than your average “dumb blonde”. Before she was known as Marilyn Monroe, the all-American blonde movie star, she was the brunette, orphaned girl, Norma Jeane Baker. Growing up in Los Angeles, Norma lived a loveless childhood and was in and out of foster homes until she got married at 16. While in New York, Marilyn opened her own production company Marilyn Monroe Productions, with the aspiration to write and produce her own movies to prove to the world that she was more than just a sex symbol and “dumb blonde”. Marilyn wrote, acted in, and produced The Prince and the Showgirl, where the lead character (played by Monroe) was vulnerable on camera, displayed emotion and gave a truly revolutionary performance (Davis). This performance by Monroe highlighted the fact that female actresses could have just as much deep, personal screen presence as their male co-stars. And according to Sarah Churchwell, a professor of American literature at the University of London, “‘The Prince and the Showgirl’ was going to finally demonstrate everything that she had been fighting for a decade, and she was going to get all of that credibility that she wanted.” (Davis). Marilyn Monroe will always be classified as one of the most influential figures of female sexuality, and is one of the most iconic sex symbols of all time.
