Marilyn Monroe to this day is still one of the most recognized sex symbols of our time. She set the stage of what is was to be sexy. She created an image that is known around the world. (Marilyn Monroe, 2010). She is known for her movies and for her promiscuous love life. She was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California (Marilyn Monroe Biography, 2010). She was born to a mother who had severe psychiatric problems and an unknown father. Her mother was institutionalized for her psychiatric problems and Marilyn was put in foster care (Marilyn Monroe Biography, 2010). She bounced around in foster homes until age 16 when she married her first husband Jimmy Doughtery (Marilyn Monroe Biography, 2010). This was not a marriage of love, it was a marriage to avoid going into another orphanage. The marriage did offer a stable relationship, one which she never had growing up. However, after their first year Jim got called up to serve in the South Pacific during World War II. The marriage ended in 1946. She chose her career over being a housewife.
Marilyn wanted to do something more with her career so she began to take classes to improve her skills as an actress. She signed her first contract with Twentieth Century Fox on August 26, 1946 and decided to dye her hair blonde and change who she was to who she wanted to become.
