Marilyn Monroe is an icon that is idolized by many and had a great impact on pop culture. She didn’t have the best childhood and had a lot of up and downs in her life. Marilyn Monroe was born in California in 1926. She was named Norma Jeane Mortenson after a popular actress at the time. Her mother Gladys Baker was mentally ill, so she had to put Monroe in foster care. She lived in a foster home until she was seven years old. She had two other siblings from her mother’s first marriage. She never met them because her mom’s first husband took them to live with him in Kentucky.
Monroe went to live with her mom’s good friend. She stayed with her for a long time until she got sent away again. She got tired of living in foster care so she decided to get married at sixteen years old. His name was Jim Dougherty and he was twenty-one years old. The marriage lasted until she was twenty. Then they divorced and she started modeling. During this time is when she started doing magazines and photo shoots. Monroe also started bleaching her hair blonde around this time. Then she started to use the name Marilyn Monroe instead of Norma Jeane. She signed to Fox after passing her screen test. This is when her acting career started and was just the beginning of her legacy.
Monroe started to get into acting. She didn’t get to do a lot of movies at the time. When she was in a movie she was just an extra in the background. She really didn’t get any speaking roles. In 1947 she got her first speaking role in a movie. It wasn’t much but one line but it was a big step in her career to get a speaking role. She got the role in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes which was a very successful play on Broadway. She took the role very seriously and worked to her full potential. She was often late to set and that didn’t sit well with everyone on set. The reason she was always late was because she was nervous and had to build up the nerve to go to the set. Once she did get on set she was very professional. The film got a lot of buzz and it was a successful film. After the film both Monroe and her co star in the movie Jane Russell got a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Getting that star on the Hollywood walk of fame really showed her success in the movie industry.

Prior to her birth, Marilyn's father bought a motorcycle and headed north to San Francisco, abandoning the family in Los Angeles. Marilyn grew up not knowing for sure who her father really was. Her mother, Gladys, had entered into several relationships, further confusing her daughter as to who it was who fathered her. Afterward, Gladys gave Norma Jean (Marilyn) the name of Baker, a boyfriend she had before Mortenson. Poverty was a constant companion to Gladys and Norma. Gladys, who was extremely attractive and worked for RKO Studios as a film cutter, suffered from mental illness and was in and out of mental institutions for the rest of her life, and because of that Norma Jean spent time in foster homes. When she was nine she was placed in an orphanage where she was to stay for the next two years. Upon being released from the orphanage, she went to yet another foster home. In 1942, at the age of 16, Norma Jean married 21-year-old aircraft plant worker James Dougherty. The marriage only lasted four years, and they divorced in 1946. By this time Marilyn began to model swimsuits and bleached her hair blonde. Various shots made their way into the public eye, where some were eventually seen by RKO Pictures head Howard Hughes. He offered Marilyn a screen test, but an agent suggested that 20th Century-Fox would be the better choice for her, since it was a much bigger and more prestigious studio.
