Marilyn Manson and The Shock Rock Effect on America Marilyn Manson is a shock rock and industrial rock band known for their gothic stage shows and controversial music during the 1990s and the 2000s. Discovered by Nine Inch Nails producer Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson produced extremely gothic industrial metal albums aimed towards young people who enjoyed trash metal, death metal, industrial rock, and grunge. This enabled the band to gain a cult following that eventually broke into the mainstream, getting major hits and Grammy nominations. Marilyn Manson is an act influenced mainly by shock rock artists, industrial rock artists, and experimental glam rock artist David Bowie. Alice Cooper “pioneered a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal that was designed to shock… [utilizing horror motifs such as] electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood, and huge boa constrictors” (Erlewine). Singer Vincent Furnier even adopted the name Alice Cooper as an androgynous stage personality, further perpetuating the act of creating a character to act as the face of a band. These characteristics directly match the characteristics of Marilyn Manson. However, the band built upon this influence and took the act even further, involving themes of sex, murder, and Satanism in their music and their …show more content…
The band has influenced many other metal, rock, electronic, and pop groups such as Slipknot, Muse, Skrillex, and Lady Gaga. The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan has stated that Marilyn Manson is “very savvy in that he lets people think things about him or plays into things to see what will happen, almost like a performance artist. [He has] identified a culture that was coming and now that culture is everywhere” (Ewens). Marilyn Manson’s music has consistently been protested and fought against by the government and has even been used as a scapegoat for school shootings, specifically Columbine (Manson; Strauss). The controversy that surrounds Marilyn Manson has played a large role in how society reacts to the seemingly detrimental effects of rock music on young people, even though that argument has been previously made in regards to different types of rock music. This controversy has only helped to propel Marilyn Manson towards the forefront of rock culture in America and is still relevant today in the discussion of political correctness. Nevertheless, Marilyn Manson continues to be an influential and powerful force in rock, pop, and electronic
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists, but when he was alive he considered himself to be a complete failure. It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh created a new era of art, he learned to use art to escape his mental illness, and he still continues to inspire artists over 100 years later.
The satanic cult panic in part contributed to the conviction of Misskelley, Echols and Baldwin. Baldwin himself describes this assumption; “I can see where they might think I was in a cult,” he said, in that 1993 interview, “because I wear Metallica T-shirts.” (Rich, 2013). The article goes on to explain that the crime happened at the end of the five-year satanic panic period that had plagued American popular culture. These boys did not dress like other teens; they did not listen to the same music. Metal music especially music from bands like Metallica were frowned upon because of their expletive lyrics. When the public established that the boys were different from them, they developed stories that would align with their beliefs. The article establishes that after several weeks of investigation and no clear leads, “rumors of satanic involvement assumed greater urgency” (Rich, 2013) By doi...

Manson had a plan in mind. When were the Beatles first? released "The White Album," it was a hit. Manson listened to it often. He had a great devotion to the Beatles, who he believed spoke to him across.
As Manson grew older he committed some felonies which landed him in jail, but he was released after a short while. In 1967 Manson travelled to San Francisco where he met a group of hippies he soon became friends with. They formed a band called the Manson Family and began to travel the country. Manson had developed a racist attitude and believed that black people were “evil”. Manson then went on to brainwash the impressionable young girls and told them that they could find eutopia through a cave underneath Death Valley where they could stay until black people, due to their innate inferiority, relinquished their power.
This article demonstatres how important Kurt Cobain was both as a rock and roll icon and a philosopher. His songs which he recorded himself are still popular today, over 20 years after his death. The author argues how Cobain influences other young artists and his effect on the direction of the music industry.
The 1960's were turbulent years in America, and Jim Morrison created an image of himself that stretched the boundaries of popular culture and entertainment. He was the first musician to truly live the creed of the moment, " sex drugs and rock and roll." Morrison's complicated lyrics, wild behavior, and personal charisma attracted many fans that worshipped him as a rock and roll icon. Morrision left them with a lot of great music and some very bad memories. Like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, he destroyed himself in the process of becoming a star.
Led Zeppelin appeared in the music scene, setting the new tone for a harder rock. Led Zeppelin reached new heights of commercial and critical success that made them one of the most influential groups of the era. Black Sabbath and Deep Purple transformed Led Zeppelin’s new style into a “heavier metal” rock. These bands later influenced other bands such as Judas Priest and Motörhead, which eventually started the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the 1980s.
With rioting and terrorism taking place around the world, more aggressive and rebellious styles were being created. The punk look came with this; singers like Johnny Rotton and bands like The Ramones and the Sex Pistols were a few to lead a new generation of teens. There was also the introduction of glam-rock in which musicians mixed glamour with rock. Davis Bowie was the most successful. Fans copied his "rooster" hair cut. He made the androgynous look popular.
Every musician distinctly remembers the first time they set foot on stage to perform for an enthusiastic audience. Stage fright usually disappears as the musician feeds off the crowd’s energy. Moments in the spotlight causes a person to act differently and develops his or her stage presence. I agree with Bloom when he says that punk rock creates an unforgettable buzz. For example, Jason Butler of a hardcore band called letlive. is infamous for his outrageous onstage antics. These include smashing instruments, stagediving, and fighting with security guards. As the crowd gets louder, he gets crazier. Bloom’s conclusion can be based on how the punk rock genre is commonly operated.
The first and most popular genre on the list is heavy metal. This is also referred to simply as metal by most people. Metal is a genre of rock music that was developed between 1969 and 1974. “With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterized by the use of highly-amplified distortion and fast guitar solos” (Ben, History of Heavy Metal). Heavy metal fans have been known around the world as “metal-heads” and “headbangers”. Some of the early heavy metal bands include Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
Being on the cutting edge of bizarre, alternative music is an elite privilege, complete with buzz words to exclude the mainstream. The music makes or breaks the scene. One rave deejay explains to Rosen and Flick (1992), "A great rave or techno record is like a religious experience. A bad one will give you a headache
To start off, we should know the main characteristics of metal music, which makes it special and distinguishable from the others. Metal songs usually have loud guitars with heavy distortion, a very dense bass and drum sound and powerful vocals. A Bassist, Rhythm Guitarist, Lead Guitarist, Drummer and the Vocalist who might or might not be an instrumentalist, form a typical band lineup. All parts play a very important role in giving the song its spine. The electric guitar and the sonic power that it releases when amplified has always been the key element in heavy metal. Another one is the guitar ‘power chords’, which are played with a particular finger arrangement so that they can easily be slid up and down the fret board, for consistency of speed on stage. The prominent role of the bass enhances the metal sound, and the interplay of bass and guitar is a focal element that provides the low-end sound crucial to making the music "heavy". The spirit of metal drumming is to generate a constant loud bea...
Heavy metal music grabs a hold of rock’s most rudimentary elements; youth, rebellion, sex, fantasy, and a good time at all costs. It is directed towards the alienation and trauma that plagues adolescent life, particularly among the lives if teenage boys. They tend to see their lives as controlled by parents and teachers. For many others, it is a way to release frustration and anger. For instance, a heavy metal concert to those who like heavy metal, is not just a musical performance, full of elaborate costumes and settings. It is a community of teenagers who participate in a shared celebration of youth. (Ragland 1-2).
