Music is something that I believe we could not live without. There is a quote by a philosopher named Friedrich Nietzschethat says “without music, life would be a mistake”. I interpret this to mean that humans would not be creative if it were not for music. There is a reason that music can take us where word cannot. When you hear so many different sounds coming together to make a perfect harmony it is obvious that no words can make you feel the same way as the music. The best thing about music is that there are literally too many genres to choose from. There are different genres of music for any mood you are in. The origins behind these different genres is an interesting and rich history that is begging to be studied and written about. Let me explain.... The definition of the word genre is “a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style or subject matter” (Merriam Webster). These categories are what is used to classify music into different genres. The 5 most popular genres of music include heavy metal, rock n' roll, alternative, hard rock, and classical. The first and most popular genre on the list is heavy metal. This is also referred to simply as metal by most people. Metal is a genre of rock music that was developed between 1969 and 1974. “With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterized by the use of highly-amplified distortion and fast guitar solos” (Ben, History of Heavy Metal). Heavy metal fans have been known around the world as “metal-heads” and “headbangers”. Some of the early heavy metal bands include Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. In the late 1970s heavy ... ... middle of paper ... ...ument. Also during this time, the basic forces required for an orchestra became somewhat standardized. “Wind instruments became more refined in the Classical period. While double reeded instruments like the oboe and bassoon became somewhat standardized in the Baroque, the clarinet family of single reeds was not widely used until Mozart expanded its role in orchestral, chamber, and concerto settings” (wikipedia). Oddly enough four out of the five genres on the top five genres list were associated with rock music. The one genre that was not related to rock music (classical music), was about the farthest you can get from rock music. Each of the five genres have their own unique style and an even more unique history, and I guarantee that if you take the time to research them you will find something that interests you and will make you want to learn more about that genre.

Other instruments are occasional additions.Standard group of four sections: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. And each instrument is used distinctively.Wind instruments mainly used as solo instruments or as part of the basso continuo. The wind section had become a separate unit capable of contrast and distinct colour. The harpsichord generally plays an ostinato under the orchestra. Piano not invented. The piano introduces a third colour-tone to be contrasted with the orchestra
Rock ‘n’ Roll Rock ‘n’ roll was a controversial yet fashionable genre of popular music that emerged in the early 1950s (America in the World, 1776 to the Present : A Supplement to the Dictionary of American History: Mâ€'Z, Index. 2016, p896-899.). Its origin is also started from the revolution of bourgeois. The younger generation had gone through the Second World War, though, the older generation had treated kids. Two generations that had each world war had divided. A lot of the pain and anger felt by the younger generation made them to resist against the social establishment. As a result, the war had created a gulf between generations but further reduced the gap between blacks and whites. The youth of the 1950s felt unconnected to their society and began looking at the world more globally, and also began looking for new role models who reflected their ideas and beliefs. They knew that ideas of old generation would no longer work in a modern society. Thus several young leaders stood out and took center stage that setting the pace for the direction of society and its music form that point on. At this time, technical innovations had emerged such as electric guitar and electric bass. This is the impetus of creation of music including rock ‘n’
Since the earliest days of human civilization music has been a key tool for communication of stories which carried emotions through them. If we think back to our youngest years of life music has surrounded us whether it was from our parents singing us lullabies or from some sort of toy that played music we can say that musical melodies have helped shape or lives one way or another. Once we start growing up and figuring out who we are our musical preferences change; some people like classical and some like punk. We start to befriend people who like the same music as us and eventually we may attend a musical event. Our lives somewhat revolve around the music that we listen to.
That brings us to the last segment of our concert, the Modern Era. Traditoinal musical instruments in the modern period have not changed nearly as much as they have in the 18th and 19th centuries. There have been gradual iterations of musical instruments within the 1900’s, such as updates to the violin family. There were many new instruments created in the Modern Era, all of which focused around electricity. This evening’s selections do not include any such selections with electronic instruments; however, there are arrangements available for the electric instruments such as the organ, keyboard or syntehsizer, or electric guitar.
When something is created it is a given that it will be picked apart, dismantled, will evolve into something even greater. It has become the norm in film-making to play by these rules of deformation. Movie makers have stretched the definitions of genre to encompass the given criteria set up by the very people who created these staple types of films that movie goers are used to. Today we can watch romantic comedies that take place in outer space, or horror where no one is killed. It seems as though as soon as you find a clear definition of what a specific genre is, someone comes along and reinvents the category.
Rock is derived from the genre Rock and Roll, and in the 1960’s passed through what many called the “golden age”. During this decade was when rock was reassured as a musical genre, and became due to the advances in the radio technologies on the last decade. During this period, several of the best rock bands and artists appeared like The Beatles or Jimmy Hendrix.
As one of the most popular music genres, rock music has grown and expanded to incorporate many styles throughout the years. A rock band usually consists of a vocalist, an acoustic drum kit played with a strong beat, usually a back beat, and features electric and acoustic guitars. From its beginnings in the late 1950s and early 1960s until the present day, rock has changed styles seemingly every decade as new bands become popular because of their unique style of music. Throughout the years rock has influenced our culture and helped shape the world we live in today.
Before the Baroque era, music was rarely written specifically for instruments; most often, music played on instruments was originally for voice. The Baroque Era last from 1600 to 1750. During this time, instruments were improved, and composers began to write pieces for specific instruments. Music became more popular with the middle class, and amateur musicians became to sprout up, separate from the church and the court.
Rock music is a term that should be familiar. Originally dubbed “rock and roll” in the 1940’s and 1950’s, rock and roll is almost always fronted by an electrical guitar and heavily influenced by blues, R&B, and even country music. By the late 1960’s and early 1970’s rock and roll began to be shortened to just “rock music”, and the entire style starting branching out into other sub-genres such as punk rock, heavy metal, garage rock, hard rock, among others. The sub-genre in question however is Alternative Rock, which is generally defined as despite following the fundamentals of rock music, it strays away from what is considered “mainstream” at the time by using concepts such as extensive underground music association, muddied or distorted guitars, more prominent use of power chords, and even a sort of rebellious or defiant attitude in lyrics and sound.
Loud, soothing, meaningful, and deep, rock music has many characteristics. These characteristics are ones that rock music fans appreciate. But, many people have different preferences of music, such as pop, rap, country, and other genres. Although there are several types of music, most modern music comes back to the foundation of rock and roll. Many artists have been influenced by the heart-wrenching power of rock music. Most people that enjoy rock music do not know how rock started. It is a genre that has evolved over the years.
Hard rock of the 70's. It was a type of rock and roll that fused rock music with strong musical influences from different styles of music. If the music of the 70's didn't happen the way they did there is no telling what music today would be like. The technology advances of the 70's has also influenced music greatly , if synthesisers weren't made polyphonic and portable they would be probably no sample based music , and we definitely would not have. Wouldn't it have been great to have been alive at a time when the radio played nothing but classic song. Much better than today when the radio just plays formula pop crap. Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1976.The top selling single of the year was actually Silly Love Songs by Wings.Which is a pretty terrible song when you think about it .The list is rounded out with novelty songs Instrumental TV tunes, live versions of songs that had already charted and inexplicably, a ten year old Beatles song re released for the heck of it.There is some great stuff there too but if you cast your eyes over the full list you'll see middle of the road easy listening pap, soul-less manufactured disco, covers,
Music is like food; it is part of everyday life. As I said before, there are a mix of both traditional and modern genres. The most popular genre as we hear today is banda or band. It usually consists between 10 and
Pop/Rock music are very wide genres and have many different compositional elements. They are also genres that fluctuate throughout time periods. Early 2000’s pop music can be characterized as synth beats with an introduction of auto tuned vocals, where now it is a heavy emphasis on swampy jungle beats and sexual lyrics. As far as composition goes, pop music typically has stuck to basic chord progressions, often just simple variations on the 1-4-5-1 progression. Rock music however has been notably more complex. It has more theory present across the board and many bands and artists incorporate classical
