The authors of The Lone Survivor are Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson. Marcus Luttrell joined the United States Navy in 1999. After extensive training for three years, he was commissioned as a Navy SEAL in 2002. Patrick Robinson is best known for his U.S. Navy based novels, which includes Seawolf, Nimitz Class, and Kilo-Class. Luttrell and Robinson met up in Cape Cod, Massachusetts where they began to write the book, The Lone Survivor. Their purpose behind writing the story was to tell the tragic story of the failed Operation Red Wing. The operation left only one Navy SEAL alive, Marcus Luttrell. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 15, 1998, and attended basic training at NTC Great Lakes, Illinois, from March 8 to May 17, 1999. On June 28, 2005, he endured a traumatic experience which left everyone except him dead. He was eventually rescued by American forces with the aid of a local Afghani tribe. Patrick Robinson is a British novelist and newspaper columnist. His recent books include naval-based thrillers, including The Lone Survivor. They all tell the story of a crisis facing the world in the early 21st century. For this story, no additional sources were used, just Marcus Luttrell. Even though Luttrell lost many comrades in the failed operation, he was unbiased, and even complimented some of the Taliban’s witty tactics. Luttrell mentions how the Taliban would use the SEAL’s laws against them, which gave them an upper hand because they had no laws to follow. Based on the fact that Luttrell was the Lone Survivor, Robinson and Luttrell are completely qualified to write this book. Robinson and Luttrell simply use a narrative writing style to tell the story.
