This quote from the book, Lone Survivor, shows the incredible resolve that the Author and protagonist of the story, Marcus Luttrell has. The book is all about the horrors that he endured in the Hindu Kush mountain region in Afghanistan when he went on a mission with 3 other Navy SEALs (Sea, Air, and Land), Danny Dietz, Matthew “Axe” Axelson, and Michael Murphy. The book, Lone Survivor was set in the mountains of the Hindu Kush, details the fight for survival against the Taliban, and has a theme of hospitality. As stated earlier, the book was set in the mountains of the Hindu Kush. The mission began when the SEALs were called in to the commander’s office to be given the mission and have it explained to them. Their mission was to shoot and kill …show more content…
a taliban terrorist leader, thought to have ties with Osama Bin Laden, and known to be responsible for the death of American Marines in the Middle East. They then rode a helicopter into the mountains where they were descended from a helicopter into the Hindu Kush. They then walked several miles to a point where they could get a good vantage point overlooking the camp where the terrorist was thought to be. After being discovered, he and his team retreated until he was finally found by some villagers and brought into the town and sheltered. This story begins with the story of Marcus Luttrell’s life.
He was born in Texas and had always wanted to be in the military. When he became old enough to enlist, he went looking for which branch to join. A Navy recruiter told him about the Navy SEALs and he then knew that becoming a SEAL was his calling. The book then goes to detail his time in BUDS (Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL) training and the agony that he endured under the command of Instructor Reno. Marcus will later recall the training that he got at BUDS and use it as determination to make it through the horrors on the mountain. The book goes on to detail the mission to shoot and kill the Taliban leader. Everything was going as planned until some Afghani goat herders came upon the hiding SEALs by mistakel. The SEALs then faced a dilemma to either shoot and kill the goat herders and face possible legal ramifications or turn them free and face being discovered by the Taliban. They eventually decide on releasing the herders who immediately notify the Taliban of the SEALs’ presence in the mountains. A huge firefight ensues the Taliban’s discovery of the presence of the Navy SEALs. The SEALs endured many gunshots and jumping off many large slopes and facing debilitating and insufferable injuries resulting from their plunge off of the cliff. All of the SEALs except for Marcus get killed in the fight. Marcus is left alone clinging to life where he is found by some harmless Afghani villagers who vote to take him in and
grant him Pashtunwalii, a grant of protection against any threat regardless of the cost to the village. The villagers shield Marcus from the fury of the Taliban. The Taliban eventually organize an offensive force to go and forcefully abduct Marcus Luttrell from the village. They try and are met by a United States rescue force mostly made of Marines to bring Marcus back to safety. The Taliban is defeated and Marcus returns home and leaves the village intact. The book ends with all the four SEALs receiving the Medal of Honor, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual in the military. The theme of this book is hospitality. If the villagers had not granted Marcus Pashtunwalii, then he certainly would not have survived and be able to return home to his family. Another example of this is when Marcus is in the hospital recovering from his injuries and gets out of the hospital to find that the citizens of Texas had built him a new house. Marcus is overcome with joy and thankfulness that he was able to survive the mountain and make it home to see this incredible gift that his friends and family had made for him. The book Lone Survivor was a great book. I would recommend it to anyone. The book does an outstanding job depicting what United States Servicemen and Servicewomen are willing to do for us and our rights to preserve America and what it stands for. The book was very easy to read and interesting. Reading the book, I became extremely invested in the story and Marcus. I felt for him and his pain and loss that he endured in the fighting.
Personal Response-I thought the book I am a Seal Team Six Warrior by Howard Wasdin was very good and intense. The book was about a Seal Team Six Warrior named Howard Wasdin. It told how courageous Howard Wasdin had to be to survive being a Navy Seal.
The novel, “Shiloh” by Shelby Foote is a fictional recreation of the bloody battle. The story begins with the soldiers of the Confederate Army heading towards Pittsburg Landing. The men are marching in terrible conditions. It is pouring down rain and they are dragging their tired legs through the mud. The troops come to a halt so the commanders can talk to General Johnston. General Johnston says the only way they might have a chance is if they plan a surprise attack. As the sergeants hand the men their guns, they are told to check the powder in case it got wet in the rain. A group of soldiers test their guns out on a deer running close by. At the same time the shots were fired, the sun came out and the soldiers started to scream and cheer. These noises combined were more than enough to alert the Union soldiers of the Confederates advance. Palmer remembers what his life was like before going to war. He attended the Louisiana State Military Academy when the Confederacy seceded from the Union. One of his professors predicted the south did not have a chance of winning the war. That night Palmer dreams of holding Sherman at gunpoint making him admit that he was wrong. Prior to the battle, the commanders create a battle plan. Palmer is assigned a part in this process. When the plan fails, Palmer learns that planning a battle is more difficult than it seems because the commanders on the ground face challenges that do not exist on paper.
I am reading tides of war blood in the water by Alexander London. It's about a navy seal who is a dolphin trainer. The book started with him and his brother are surfing and his brother got palled under by a shark and Cory the older brother help him get top. So far the book is really good.
The book that i chose to do this speech on is Cowboy Ghost. Cowboy Ghost is about a boy named Titus who goes on a cattle drive through Florida in the early 1900s. The main character in this story is Titus. Titus Timothy MacRobertson is a small and weak 16 year old boy that wants to impress his father that kind of ignores him. His mother died giving birth to him and his father “blames” Titus for her death. His father (Rob Roy MacRobertson) is a strong, massive and hardworking man. His brother Micah is a 29 year old man that is described as being a second Rob Roy MacRobertson because of his strength and size, at the end of the book you find out that he was more like their mother. The cattle drive was going really good until seminoles (indians)
Marcus Luttrell was born on November 7, 1975. Marcus was just like any other boy. He played little league baseball and participated in martial arts, which would later help him out in the Navy Seals. In Marcus’ family, all the men have been in the army, from great-grandparents to great-great grandparents and so on. So one day, Marcus was talking with his twin brother Morgan, who is a current Navy Seal, and they decided to go into the navy seals. Marcus knew that this was not going to be easy, but he never backs down from anything.

The book Outlaw Platoon written by Sean Parnell is a soldiers’ tale of his platoon in one of the most dangerous places on earth. This book is a non-fiction riveting work that tells the story of a platoon that spent sixteen months on an operating base in the Bermel Valley, the border of Pakistan. This mission the men were sent on was part of a mission called Operation Enduring Freedom. This book is extremely relevant to the war that we are still fighting in Afghanistan and the humanitarian work that continues. We still have men in this area fighting and losing their lives everyday. It is the focus of ongoing political debates and the purpose of our involvement there is an ongoing question in the minds of many Americans. In writing this book, Parnell makes it clear in his author’s notes that he indeed was not trying to pursue one political agenda over another. His goal as not to speak of all members of the platoon and expose their identities and the types of soldiers they were but instead to showcase some of the men’s bravery and abilities during the war. Parnell believed that he owed it to the men to write something that would show the world what these men go through during combat in an honest and raw account. Another purpose of Parnell’s in writing this book is an attempt at making sure these men are given a place in American war history.

The narrator from The Toughest Indian in the World starts off my withholding his struggles with self- identification. Only to then have it exposed in a defining moment when he asks the fighter to stay the night with him. The repercussions of his overnight visit with the fighter serve as an unfamiliar course of action. Initially the narrator reserves many of his natural inclinations as a sign of struggle with his self- identity. This can be demonstrated through “I almost protested, but decided against it.”
