Marcus Luttrell Research Paper

I think everyone has wanted to be a Navy SEAL in one point of their life, but as they get older their dream of being the best of the best fades away. Marcus Luttrell has had that dream of being a SEAL since the age of seven, and his determination and will to survive the hardest training in military history, gave Luttrell the title of a Navy SEAL.

Marcus Luttrell was born November 7th, 1975 in Houston Texas on a small ranch his parents owned. Marcus, and his twin brother Morgan Luttrell both made pact that they would both be Navy SEALS, and they started to train for the military by the age of fourteen. They trained with their neighbor, a former United States Army soldier, Billy Shelton. Billy trained them every day after school until he felt they were prepared for the military. Before going into the Armed Forces, Luttrell got a degree at Sam Houston State University in their ROTC program, making him an officer in the Navy. This was Luttrell’s first step into becoming a Navy SEAL.

Luttrell enlisted in the Navy

as a Petty officer first class. After completing basic training, Luttrell went on to Basic underwater demolition SEALS training or BUD’S. Marcus could not complete the training because he fractured his femur during an obstacle course, this was a huge setback for Marcus. Marcus was initially supposed to graduate with BUD’S class 226, but because of his injury Marcus graduated with class 228 on April 21st, 2000. After completing BUD’S, Marcus went to North Carolina for special operations medicine. This was another six months of advanced training, which included battlefield life support, and advanced emergency medicine.

Marcus was deployed to Afghanistan in 2005, as a part of SEAL team 10, to which he was assigned to Operation Red Wings. This mission was to capture or kill high ranked Taliban leader, Ahmad Shah, whose was wanted for killing Marines in Eastern Afghanistan. Marcus was deployed with a four man recon team to find the location of Ahmad Shah, so the Navy can move in on him. Marcus and his best friend Matthew Axelson were the snipers on the team, Danny Dietz was the youngest of the four men and he was in charge of communications, and Michael Murphy, the team leader who received the Medal of Honor. Which is the highest reward anyone in the Military can earn for their heroic actions.

The team had just found the location of Ahmad Shah, and shortly after they called it in to the base, the team was spotted by a small group of sheep herders.

They tied the men to trees to, to later decide to let them go, and make their way towards their evacuation point. In less than an hour the team had undergo heavy fire from the Taliban fighters. All the men were killed, except for Marcus Luttrell, because Michael Murphy had given his life to make a call back to base to tell them their location. Michael exposed himself on a cliff to make the call, and seconds after the call he was shot dead by the Taliban. After the fight Marcus had managed to walk seven miles with fractured bones, a broken back, and multiple gunshot wounds. To a nearby village, where they cared, fed, bathed, and protected Luttrell. Then after six days, Marines were given a specific location on where Luttrell was at, and they arrived and rescued

Luttrell.

Marcus received the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart for his courage, and will to survive on that mountain in Afghanistan. Marcus was honorably discharged from the Navy in 2007. Now Marcus is married to the women of his dreams, and has a son who Marcus had named, AXE. To honor his best friend who died on that mountain in Afghanistan. Marcus has always said “A part of me will always remain on that Mountain top dead, with my brothers”.
