1. Many teachers start the first day of school by teaching the subject matter or doing a fun activity. Why is this ineffective as a way to start the school year?
This way of starting the school year is ineffective because it does not leave room for students to learn procedures and what is expected of them in order to have a successful year. Laying down your expectations and procedures are vital to structuring the classroom. Teachers that do not take time to show their students what they need to do to be successful end up having an unstructured, chaotic classroom. “First Days of School” states that you need to establish consistency in the classroom. Students are better situated when they know what they need to do. Students do not want to come into their classroom not knowing what to expect. This can lead to students becoming confused and may lead to them becoming frustrated with the disorganization. By starting the school year with organizing the classroom instead of teaching subject matter, you are setting up the students to learn in an organized, and predictable learning environment.

This is a mistake. This mistake can backfire and ruin your relationship with your students. This backfire will also impact your students’ learning negatively. It is important for students to see you as the adult and someone they can look to for guidance. If you’re a student’s friend, they begin to expect things from you and will not respect you when you go from being their friend to enforcing rules. Now, being a role model doesn’t mean you have to be that teacher that is strict or above their students. You still should be friendly and caring. In the end, not being your students friend will create a better learning
It is the job of a leader to be a role model because people look up to you. Leadership is something I may have to work on a little because I am a shy person, but that doesn’t stop me. Last year, some 6th grade student were going to be selected to give a tour of the school to the 5th graders who were coming to Great Hollow the following year. My teacher was unsure that I would be a good choice because I am quiet in class. But I convinced him to let me be a tour guide and he was impressed with my performance. Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Also many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.
Both inside and outside of school, I make it a personal commitment to be a kind, helpful, and respectful role model to others, and I use those character traits to be a successful leader in my community. Kindness can be hard to come by in today’s age, so I pride myself in being a genuinely nice leader. A prime example of this would be my involvement with my dance school, the D’Arcy School of Irish Dance. While I have only been dancing for three years, I have taken the initiative to be a role model to the younger dancers. As being a Senior dancer, it is my responsibility to portray to other students the way one should act at dance class and performances. Before the lesson is prepared, the teachers must have a clear understanding of the objectives of the lesson to be taught. By having an understanding of what they students will able to accomplish at the end of the lesson, the content remains focused and thorough. The teacher must then express these objectives to the students including the standards for performance. Students can then be held accountable for expectations that are known.

Classroom by definition is a place where students meet to study the same subject. A teacher, who took a leadership role in leading discussions and getting students to be involved in learning the subject taught, controlled this environment at one time. Now a days, the role of a teacher in a classroom environment has been reversed. Students are allowed to take the leadership role in creating and leading discussions. Just as roles of the teacher and a student have changed in a classroom over the years, so have the relationships between a student and a teacher. Many years ago, as we have read and heard, student teacher relationships have been very formal, distant, and the teacher's judgement was accepted. With almost 21 years of experience as a student, I have come to learn the relationship between student and teacher can vary depending on many characteristics. Since everyone has a different background and a different character, it is almost difficult to say how a teacher should relate to a student or vice versa. I do believe that student teacher relationship should be professional, yet not so professional that students fear to approach. Teacher, student relationship should be formal, yet inviting. Teacher student relationship should definitely not be judgmental, and it should allow the teacher on her or his part to take time to get to know the student.

Students need feedback, clear expectations, and a schedule to follow throughout the day so that teachers spend less time directing behavior and more time is spent actively engaged in learning. There should be more time consumed on strengthening positive behavior and fewer on the negative.

Discipline plays a key part in education. Respect from your students will make the classroom a better atmosphere. Rules should be established on the first day. Rules should be a thoughtful process so they can be carried out to be affective, but logical consequences. We do not want the students self esteem to be damaged.
