1. Many teachers start the first day of school by teaching the subject matter or doing a fun activity. Why is this ineffective as a way to start the school year?
This way of starting the school year is ineffective because it does not leave room for students to learn procedures and what is expected of them in order to have a successful year. Laying down your expectations and procedures are vital to structuring the classroom. Teachers that do not take time to show their students what they need to do to be successful end up having an unstructured, chaotic classroom. “First Days of School” states that you need to establish consistency in the classroom. Students are better situated when they know what they need to do. Students do not want to come into their classroom not knowing what to expect. This can lead to students becoming confused and may lead to them becoming frustrated with the disorganization. By starting the school year with organizing the classroom instead of teaching subject matter, you are setting up the students to learn in an organized, and predictable learning environment.

This is a mistake. This mistake can backfire and ruin your relationship with your students. This backfire will also impact your students’ learning negatively. It is important for students to see you as the adult and someone they can look to for guidance. If you’re a student’s friend, they begin to expect things from you and will not respect you when you go from being their friend to enforcing rules. Now, being a role model doesn’t mean you have to be that teacher that is strict or above their students. You still should be friendly and caring. In the end, not being your students friend will create a better learning
