Do TV commercials care more about selling their product than actually being truthful? TV commercials are only interested in selling people their product and will use anything in their power to do that, even manipulation. Most commercials these days are centered on the concept of manipulation and making the average person believe what they are trying to get across. Making you feel as if you do what they are telling you to do then you will become something else or you will receive some sort of benefit. TV commercials use sex, emotions, and icons to manipulate its viewers.

The famous Hardees commercial starts with a beautiful woman that has dirty blonde wavy hair. She is dressed in an American flag bikini top that is obviously too small and wearing jean shorts that are way too short for her and show off her legs and butt. The woman is tan and has sweat running down her body. She is sitting on the hood of an old red Shelby Mustang, with white strips down the middle and has this monstrous burger in her hand that is bigger than her face. The camera angles are zooming in on her chest and her trying to fit this huge burger in her mouth. Hardees use this woman and her body to try to get people to pay attention to the commercial. What Hardees does not want you to know that this burger is just one of the many reasons obesity is a huge problem in the United States. Hardees want you to be attracted to this woman and purchase this burger but do not tell you that you will not look like this woman if you eat the burger. This is just one of the many ways TV commercials use manipulation, they also use your emotions. TV commercials use emotions to get ones attention.
When someone feels happy about something it makes them want to go out and do it or buy it. The same goes for when someone is sad. TV commercials use happiness and sadness to pick at viewers emotions to make them really think about helping the commercial out. An example of TV commercials using sadness to dig into their audience’s emotions is the famous SPCA commercial. The commercial starts with the song “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan in the background. Little snippets of animals that are in sewers and backyards that look horrific. The animals that are being shown have matted fur are covered in brown watery sludge. The images are so hard to watch and the songs sets the mood already. Then a voice comes over as the song gets quitter and asks the audience questions such as “Would you help these animals if you were standing right here” “How can you let them suffer” then they get to their entire point of the commercial with this line, “Just twenty-five cents a day can save this animal”. The commercial starts grabs the viewer with a sad song and then makes the sadness grow by asking you questions that make you feel bad for these animals. What they forgot to say is that these animals that you are seeing have already been saved. Yes, there are animals that are like this everywhere and they do need help how much of the donation is being made to make this commercial to grab at your emotions? When people turn on the TV and see Adam Levine or Taylor Swift they immediately what to know what is being said about them. TV commercials have realized this and use actors and singers to promote their product. An example of a commercial using famous people to promote is the Proactive commercial. Proactive started using real everyday people in their commercials but their audience did not really believe it worked because they did not know this person and didn’t trust them. Proactive started using famous stars. One commercial in particular is the one with Adam Levine. It begins with picture of Lavin in his younger years with acne all over his face. You can hear him in the background talking about how insecure he was and how he still struggles with it today and that it affected his career until of course he found Proactive. What this commercial fails to mention is that the pictures of him you are seeing are usually from a 20 years ago when he was a teenager and acne was a part of growing up. It also fails to mention that he probably has never used this product in his life and he is getting made thousands of dollars to tell you he has because they know you trust him.
What a good way to urge viewers to donate money than by showing in the commercial pictures of sorry looking animals? The type of objects they use are cages, crates, and the animals. It targets any animal or anybody in reality because they can see that these animals are in need of help, also that these animals have been abused. This commercial has demographic is an extremely important factor in commercial productions, the fact that so many different people are susceptible to the pathos of the commercial to the point of tears. According to Robert Scholes, author of On Reading a Video Text, commercials aired on television hold a dynamic power over human beings on a subconscious level. He believes that through the use of specific tools, commercials can hold the minds of an audience captive, and can control their abilities to think rationally. Visual fascination, one of the tools Scholes believes captures the minds of viewers, can take a simple video, and through the use of editing and special effects, turn it into a powerful scene which one simply cannot take his or her eyes from. Narrativity is yet another way Scholes feels commercials can take control of the thoughts of a person sitting in front of the television. Through the use of specific words, sounds, accompanying statements and or music, a television commercial can hold a viewer’s mind within its grasp, just long enough to confuse someone into buying a product for the wrong reason. The most significant power over the population held by television commercials is that of cultural reinforcement, as Scholes calls it. By offering a human relation throughout itself, a commercial can link with the masses as though it’s speaking to the individual viewer on an equal level. In 2010 the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) came out with a commercial that would shock the advertisement industry. The effectiveness of this commercial is proven, simply by watching the reactions of the commercial’s viewers. For those who have never seen the video it has a very sad and morose tone to it. The commercial begins with showing pictures and videos of suffering animals with the song “Angel” playing in the background. While this is going on the narrator of the commercial (Sarah McLachlen) is softly talking about the suffering and abuse that these unfortunate animals go through. Through many different rhetorical techniques the viewers are many times brought to tears after watching this commercial. When thinking of pieces of Rhetoric that demonstrates the use of pathos, the first thing I think of is this commercial. The sole purpose of this commercial is to emotionally compromise the audience until eventually the viewers will donate money to the cause. This video is so affective at completing this goal because of the way it connects to the viewers, and the way it uses many different methods to attack the viewer’s emotions.
These commercials make the audience feel fear, love, guilt, or joy about the situation being shown. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or ASPCA for short shows commercials to get donations that will help prevent animal cruelty and rescue animals all across the country. I have not seen this commercial on any of the apps on my phone however this is a commercial that I see often on regular television. The target audience of these commercials is animal lovers; it could be a child or an adult. The use of Pathos in the promotion of joining the ASPCA or giving a one-time donation uses animals that look sad, hurt, homeless, abused or scared needing help. It is very effective as it makes the intended audience either want to donate to help the animals or to rescue one through adoption to give it a better life. The type of music played goes along with the feeling of sadness and helplessness that the animals are feeling and makes the audiences feel sad as well. These commercials also either use the voice of a celebrity or show the celebrity holding a dog or cat while giving information about how to help the animals. The audience is shown abused, beaten, or neglected animals and asked for donations to help give medical care, food, shelter, and love to them. In an article describing the entire series of ASPCA ads that Sarah McLachlan appears in, the author states “that simple pitch has raised roughly $30 million for the organization since the advertisements started running in early 2007, making it the A.S.P.C.A.’s most successful fund-raising effort” (Strom). This article goes on to explain that many viewers are compelled to donate because they feel empowered whereas the animals being shown are helpless; the ads make the viewers feel like they can make a huge difference and this is a major advertising strategy. After further researching the success of this advertisement, it became clear that this method was not only used by the ASPCA but also in many other commercials that are aiming for donations from the viewers. It is found that people “are particularly sympathetic and likely to donate when they see sad expressions versus happy or neutral expressions” (Small & Verrochi). Based on this research, it is intentional that victims are pictured on charity appeals, such as this one, to elicit the responses that are believed to engender prosocial behavior. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.

If you analyze commercial you can see how certain things play a major role in the success of a commercial. The ad I decide to analyze as an example is the commercial snickers used during the Super Bowl in 2010;”Betty White”-Snickers. This commercials starts off with guys playing a game of football with an elderly women know as Betty White. As Betty White tries to play football she is tackled to the ground. Her teammates refer to her as Mike when they come up to her to ask why she has been “playing like Betty White all day”. This helps inform the audience that Betty White is not actually playing but instead represent another teammate. As the guys keep arguing Mikes girlfriend calls her over and tells her to eat a snicker. Betty White takes the first bite and then suddenly a man appears in her place ready to finish the game. At the end of the commercial the statement "You're not you when you're hungry" is shown followed by the Snickers bar logo. This thought has been held on for far too long. In a consumer-driven society, advertisements invade the minds of every person who owns any piece of technology that can connect to the internet. Killbourne observes that “sex in advertising is pornographic because it dehumanizes and objectifies people, especially women,” (271). Advertising takes the societal ideology of women and stereotypes most kids grow up learning and play on the nerves of everyone trying to evoke a reaction out of potential customers, one that results in them buying products.

There are many companies that use sex appeal in their ads today. For instance Victoria Secrets is one of the top sellers in lingerie. They show skin in every one of their ads. All of their models put on the sex appeal for all commercials and magazines. That is what helps them sell. Women look at those ads and see those girls floating on clouds like angels and feel they could feel the same if they wore that purple bra or red underwear. Countless articles have been written on false advertising on television. Most of these articles target specific instances of fraudulent behavior, but some do address the television industry as a whole. These articles for the most part seem to be complaining about politicians (more so than the advertisers themselves) and the fact that "it is not politically palatable"(Miller) to make more stringent laws against fraudulent advertising. This means that politicians are not willing to make stricter laws for fear that they might come back to haunt them later. It is that topic that seemed to come up most in articles on false advertising.

The people that typically fit into this category of consumers are people that buy items to fit in or to impress people. Sometimes ads can be misleading in ways that confuse the consumer to purchase the product for reasons other than the actual product was designed for. Advertisers influence consumers by alluding the consumer into buying this product over a generic product that could perform the same task, directing the advertisement towards a certain audience, and developing the ad where it is visually attractive.
Commercials works through the human emotions and vanity and it appeals toward the psychologically domain turning into a temptation for weak mind people. For instance, if a person is at home watching T.V., very comfortable and suddenly, a commercial promoting any kind of food and drink comes up, that person will be hungry and thirsty in a couple of minutes. The advertising influenced his mind, provoking an involuntary reaction to do what the commercial induced him to do.
