In the psychiatric units, there are many different patients with different mental illness. One mental illness that interested me is mania. One drug that is given for those who has mania is Lithium (Lithotabs, Lithobid), which is the prototype of antimanic drug class medications. Mania is an opposite from depression that occurs in those who has bipolar disorder, who also experience a period of depression followed by a period of mania. When entering the patient room, I would introduce myself to the patient and why I’m assisting her today. I would tell the patient that her doctor has prescribed Lithium to mange your mental health, mania and prevent from future episodes from happening. This drug is very toxic and causes severe CNS, renal, and pulmonary problems that may lead to death. Some of the side effect that you need to watch for are; lethargy, slurred speech, muscle weakness, fine tremor, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. If you see any of these symptoms, please notify your doctor right away. This medication is 600 mg by mouth three times a day (Hallowell & Comerford, 2014). and you must take it with food to prevent upset stomach (Karch, 2013). It is also good to limit your caffeine intake because caffeine can decrease lithium level and drug effect (Hallowell & Comerford, 2014). If you are planning to get pregnant, I would advise the you to reconsider being pregnant at this time and take birth control because the drug can have the potential adverse effects on the fetus or neonate, birth control is advise (Karch, 2013).
