“…Thus, at the beginning of formalized education in our country, communities created
schooling schedules that were cohesive with the lifestyles and responsibilities of the
student populations. In rural areas, schooling was structured around agricultural
harvesting. Local school boards and superintendents gave students months off so that
students could help their parents with harvesting crops and caring for the farm. Unlike
their rural counterparts, in the mid-18oos, children in urban areas were subject to year-
round schooling. Yet because education was not compulsory at the time, students were
able to take time off when they pleased, and thus, attendance became inconsistent and
problematic. To encourage maximum school attendance, urban districts adopted the
summers-off approach” (396).
The change of the system to include summer breaks was due to issues not quite under their
control at the time. Attendance is no longer as prevalent of an issue and yet this system is still in
use. The educational program of the United States has stuck with this outdated decision for
hundreds of years and the change for a solid education must be made. There are tools available
for what is needed to carry out what could not be done in the 1800s, and therefore urban
adaptations need to be made back to the year-round school. If society has continuously adapted
to so many things to survive (i.e. technology, fashion trends, laws, etc.), then why has it taken
this long for education to still remain outmoded? This lack of progress made within the
education system has hindered students on many fronts. The United States’ global position
regarding education has fallen short.

A student at Ste. Genevieve High School even expressed how she needs the summer break to unwind and not have to care about studying for a class when school would return to session. Another reason students may oppose this change is due to the fact High School students may hold summer jobs to earn some spending money. In certain instances, the year-round calendar may prevent students from holding these jobs or holding them for extended periods of time. One more reason students may disapprove of year-round education is because of extracurricular activities, and how they will be changed or shifted. New teachers can be affected in many ways. Unlike teachers who work in traditional school districts, they do not have the long summer to prepare and acquaint themselves for the forthcoming school year. Along with preparing lessons and assignments, teachers would not be able to take their own vacations and prepare for school
According to writer Vanessa St Gerard from The Education Digest, a traditional school year is defined as “large blocks of instruction with inter-spread week-long breaks, all culminating with a long summer break” (2007). This structure is most familiar to Americans today, however the new alternative schedule presents a variance in the time allocated for breaks throughout the school year. “During a modified school year, instruction periods typically are broken up into 45-or-60-day sessions with each of these being divided by breaks lasting three to four weeks” (St Gerard, 2007). In the alternative calendar, schools would still break for a summer session, but in most cases the break would consist of about five weeks rather than eight. While the calendars might differ in session times, they would both meet the federally mandated 180 days of ins...
One of the most talked about issues of schooling today, would be year round schooling. The program started as a new way to learn. The old way and still the way most schools calendar is set up was designed the way it is due to harvest times, when the United States was a farming country. There have been many studies done, and some schools have already implemented this program. The studies and the schools that have gone ahead and implemented the program have seen both good things and bad things in their findings. There will be both pros and cons for every issue, and some may see pros and cons differently. Year round schooling is the idea of attending school for an entire year, not all 365 days, but continuously throughout the year. Year round schooling operates on a different schedule to incorporate the same amount of classroom time as a typical school schedule has. The only difference is that the breaks are shorter, but there are more of them in year round schooling. This is the basis of most of the arguments for and against year round schooling.
Have you ever began a book only to find that after a few chapters into it a more important task comes up that must be given attention to and you don’t make it back to the book for some time. The ensuing matter has been taken care of and now it is time to finish that novel that thought was so great you just couldn’t put it down but, where did you exactly leave off and what character are doing what now? Often it is required to skim a few previous chapters to get a sense of what is going on to give the full focus to the new events taking place. As the summer ends, the leaves begin to change and our school children return to the classroom to begin this very similar task. Instead of rereading a few pages, teachers must review with every student were they are scholastically and every student is very different. Almost a month into the new school year last year’s material is covered and reviewed. Our traditional school calendar may be to blame for our failing schools systems. Can schools attending year round with smaller gaps of time off from learning benefit the student learners? Better retention of material, higher graduation with college enrollment increases and safer downtime alternatives are a few reasons why the traditional education plan should be done away with.
In the United States, most schools still use a ten-month calendar that was developed when our country’s students needed school off to help with harvesting (Palmer). Trimble Local Schools Superintendent Kim Jones says, “year-round schooling is the notion of getting away from the old agrarian calendar...which was formed up around the planting season. Students were out of school from April until harvest to work in the fields,” (qtd. in Hapka). Under the agrarian system, most United States students are in school for nine to ten months, and get a two- to three- month summer vacation. However, the United States is no longer an agricultural-based society, and students have no need to take a three-month-long, unnecessary, not to mention disruptive break during the summer months; instead, the United States should switch the school systems to a year-round calendar.
There are various models of YRS that can be implemented, all of which are reconfigurations of the traditional, nine-month calendar. In some areas these models are known as alternative or modified calendars (Shields & Oberg, 2000) and they all have unique characteristics. Because of theses differences, school systems should spend some time analyzing which model will be best for their particular school; educators may find that some models work better than others depending on the school. Estimates on the exact number of year round schedules vary, although it has been estimated that at least 50 different scheduling patterns exist (Palmer & Bemis, 1999). The most common alternatives include the single track calendar and the multi-track calendar.
Back in the olden days, schools were originally put on a schedule in which students would spend the majority of the year in school, and 2-3 months off for summer break. The purpose of this was so that children could be home for the summer to help their parents run family farms. Today, due to progressive industrialization of farming, modernized farming equipment, and decrease in family farms, the need for children to be home during the summer to help run family farms is minute if not obsolete; because of this many schools across the United States have transitioned to year-round schooling (“Summer”). Contrary to belief, year round schooling does not usually mean more school days. Currently most year-round schools adhere to the 180 day school year. Instead of the traditional lengthy summer vacation, year-round schools distribute the 180 days throughout the entire year while allowing for shorter breaks. Common scheduling for year-round schools includes cycles of 2-3 months in school followed by 2-3 week breaks (“Research Spotlight...

Throughout time education has been considered a process that every so often must be improved. The education quality in the U.S. has declined over the years and people have been looking for a way to make improvements. A more recent proposal has been to go from a traditional nine-month schedule to an all year program. Supporters of year round school claim it gives the student a better education. However, the prospect of year round school is not beneficial to the taxpayers pocket, to the education a student receives, or to the people involved with the district.
The American Education System is failing, it is benefiting everyone but the student. The Department of Education and NEA partner with psychologists, text book companies, and social workers to what they call fix the education programs provided. Records show that these places have benefitted from this alliance by being given enriched offers and even more political powers (Haugen 25-26). The country is ignoring the root of the problem, the corrupt program structure and the new reform of teaching students for menial jobs is taking over (Haugen 24-25). The factors causing this can be fixed, the question is it being pushed hard enough to be fixed?
Every person will have their own opinions and input on education and what is, or is not, wrong with it today. Some of these people include those who can actually make a change in the system; we have heard empty promises from senators, congressmen, and our very own presidents. We all want to improve the system for our children, siblings and for ourselves. In 1848 Horace Mann found solutions for education, but today we need more focus on foreign languages, nutrition, and personal finance classes.

What do you think about going to school year round with little breaks here and there, but not your traditional three month summer break? Year round schooling has been a decision argued with the government, teachers, principals and parents. Many kids and adults like to relax on their three month break. Many students are used to having two week winter break, one week spring break, and three months of summer break. Overall, one three month break would benefit than having three-week breaks broken up throughout the school year.
One of the biggest systems that must be devised is one that transfers knowledge across generations, therefore it comes to no surprise that we have an established public school system whose intent is to educate every child without extra price, even going so far as to cover transportation and food for those who're unable to cover it. Yet the state has set the program in such a way where students are treated more like machines in an assembly line being injected with facts and tests. Students run through different courses with the same systematic approach found in the 1920's factory lines. Every child is for the most part treated as if they were different bodies with the same mental intellect. There is little room for creativity, petty tolerance for individualism, and zero understanding of how the world is changing around us.
... is a lot more that can be said about this subject matter for both the problems and the solutions. For example, the role that each state and local government has in the education system. Unfortunately, the page limit for this paper would get in the way so the end shall go like this. The education that is in place now was put together in a different time and era. The time of the assembly line education is long gone; it is now the era for pushing children into advanced thinking and critical learning that the twenty-first century calls for. But the only thing that has been done with the education system is layer upon layer being added to nonworking, broken, old rules and higher standards for that system to work towards. The education system has not yet been brought into the modern world. It is a great feat that needs to be accomplished but it is not an impossible one.
