Making a Horror movie Scary The movie Army of Darkness by Sam Raimi is mainly a fantasy horror, mixed with comedy, set in medieval times. Just because it is a comedy does not mean the scenes will be less scary, but it challenges the director to use every element to achieve the horror. The fantasy genre opens the doors to different monsters who will let the story become horror easily and we can focus on the way this are portrayed. I will be analyzing how the director exaggerates the horrors and what he uses to make a scene scarier. The common death sentence usually would mean to throw the men in a hole and a beast that lives down there shall kill them. At first they do not show what happens in the hole so the viewer could use the suspense as a narrative and when a lot of blood squirts out from under we can suspect it is something horrible and impossible to defeat. As he is thrown inside the change in lighting and even smoke conveys the mysteriousness. As he fights to live they give us a shot were cleverly they put the lighting against the darkness; death and a monster awaits him below. As a diegetic sound of lighting gives fright it also gives an excuse for the light used in the scene. The non-diegetic sound of music starts to play in a threatening kind but at the same time imperial and grand to show the big war is coming. The camera trembles and the screen is filled with skeleton hands and smoke. The idea of a “scary movie” could be innocuous enough, if it is simply frights and ghoulish images, but Nosferatu raised the bar and discovered how to delve into a collective mindset and produce a truly unsettling product. The sound used in this scene are all diegetic, the sounds of gunfire and explosions show that the characters in this scene are in very real danger of being shot or blown up, this helps the viewer develop a more personal connection with the characters since the scene is towards the end of the film, the viewer has developed a personal connection with the characters and do not want them to die. The diegetic sounds of military personnel can be heard, this is used to show the urgency that the military personnel have to get The Sapphires and Dave out of the dangerous situation. This scene is used to emphasise the danger that Dave and The Sapphires are in very real and very lethal danger, the mixture of sinister camera angles to emphasise the visual danger that the characters are in to the inhospitable sounds portrayed by the scene to highlight the explosive danger that the characters are in. The lighting used features the darkness and the difficulty to see due to the night sky.
Analysis of Halloween by John Carpenter and Evil Dead by Sam Raimi The horror genre is characterized by the attempt to make the viewer experience dread, fear and terror. Some of the most common elements include vampires, zombies and werewolves. One of the films which I am going to analyze is “Halloween” by John Carpenter which starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence. This film was made in 1978; this was considered the film which started the “slasher film” genre. This genre was continued in dozens of violent movies throughout the 1980s.

Many horror movies display a restriction on creativity. The media is continuously repeating the same cliched narrative, stereotypical character base and themes, using the same soundtracks and special effects. Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow is no exception to this. In the opening scene a violin track is used to create suspense, going quickly from loud to quite, intense to subtle throughout the scene. Along with creating suspense, this technique also indicates to the viewer when a jump scare may occur, as well as following the character’s heartbeat as the scene gets more dramatic. Just as a mirror reflects one’s face, the horror genre is a physical representation of how fear is portrayed to discuss the social anxieties of one’s time period. Representations of fear have continued to vary in accordance to reflect a particular time period’s social anxieties. Obviously casting Jamie Lee Curtis, a scream queen whose mother (Janet Leigh from Psycho) is the original scream queen, is a nod toward the audience. Horror films are designed to frighten the audience and engage them in their worst fears, while captivating and entertaining at the same time. Horror films often center on the darker side of life, on what is forbidden and strange. These films play with society’s fears, its nightmare’s and vulnerability, the terror of the unknown, the fear of death, the loss of identity, and the fear of sexuality. Horror films are generally set in spooky old mansions, fog-ridden areas, or dark locales with unknown human, supernatural or grotesque creatures lurking about. These creatures can range from vampires, madmen, devils, unfriendly ghosts, monsters, mad scientists, demons, zombies, evil spirits, satanic villains, the possessed, werewolves and freaks to the unseen and even the mere presence of evil.
Horror movies are one of the most fascinating genres of film that exists. They are unrealistic but at the same time, they are also realistic. This realism that they contain is what draws people’s interest towards them because viewers are able to associate aspects of their own lives with the film. Every horror movie, no matter how farfetched the theme or plot may be, contains an element that people can relate to. In any good horror story line you have to have certain aspects or traits to be categorized as a good horror story. What do the readers look for in a horror story you may ask. Well the primary ingredients for making a fearsome, shuddery, monstrous story are foreshadowing, fear, suspense, mystery/surprise and imagination of course. Without every single one of these elements, the reader would not be involved and wouldn 't even continue to finish reading the full story. Nathaniel Hawthorne, Phillip K. Dick and Edgar Allen Poe are only some of the great representations of who have constructed frightening yet delightful stories for us to read.
Would you rather be horrified beyond repair or thrilled to the point of no return? In horror, the main purpose is to invoke fear and dread into the audience in the most unrealistic way. Horror movies involve supernatural entities such as ghosts, vampires, teleportation, and being completely immortal. As thriller films are grounded in realism and involve more suspense, mystery, and a sense of panic. Though both genres will frighten the audience, it will happen in two different ways. Whether the horror thrills or the thriller horrifies, a scare is always incorporated.
