Bullying: A Child’s Scariest Nightmare
(A) Bullying is a horrific action that severely upsets many children worldwide every day. This activity can be done physically, emotionally, mentally,online, etc. and they target these people based on many reasons such as race, gender, sexual orientation, behavioral patterns and activities. A bully can be anybody, in addition, they can completely ruin a child, and make them feel alone, insecure, and uncomfortable. They also try make their victim believe that nobody likes them. (B) Jamie Nabozny was a student living in Ashland, Wisconsin, a small town on the edge of Lake Superior. He attended Ashland Middle and High School. (B) In middle school, he was attacked physically and verbally many times, but he avoided it, and in high school, the oppression just got worse. In particular, during high school, his determination was tested when one child viciously beats him up and gave him a death threat. He had to be in hospital for 5 days to get over this ordeal. (C) At this point, he was definitely feeling like he wanted to give up, and many children would have done that. However, he persevered through all of this, and visited a social worker instead of taking drastic measures to help him. After this, he also decided to visit a legal representative to take action against the school (D) Nabozny taught many people that they could combat such torturing and take action by pressing charges against them, and winning, and even today, he goes and tells his story to many people, to inspire and help them.
(A) Bullying can negatively affect a child majorly, and many have innumerable problems later in life due to the fact that they feel like everybody hates them. Nabozny was harassed by fellow classmates throughout middle and high school, however, he persevered and fought back, finally winning against his school in a court case. (B) He taught us through our struggles that we should never give up, and not let anybody stop us from following our beliefs. America has struggled with bullying for many decades. Bullying is a broad topic. Bullying can be defined many different ways as well as expressed in different ways and places. Bullying has different effects on everyone. Bullying is not only physical, but also affects the victim emotionally and socially. Cyber bullying and verbal bullying are different ways someone harms another person. Sexual harassment is a major form of bullying as well. “Bullying Laws” defines cyberbullying as online emails, text messages, or posts on social media and other websites (“Bullying Laws”). Examples of verbal bullying would be name-calling, threatening, and teasing. Bullying can be between peers, or between different ages. People are not aware of the laws that are in place. “As of October, 2010, 45 states had bullying laws” (“Bullying Laws”). Due to the fact, bullying is so common between many age groups and done in many ways, it is important to recognize the problem and make policies and laws to reduce bullying between all ages.

There are currently some states in the United States that have laws against bullying. There are supporters and campaigns being launched every day to bring a stop to bullying in schools. There are many aspects that are involved when trying to enact a law into a state. The essential purpose of the law, the reason why it is being enacted. If the bill is passed, who will it benefit? Followed by the statistics of bullying in the nation. And finally, the potential impact a bill like this would have on schools across the nation. Bullying has been receiving lots of media attention lately some states have been passing legislation on the matter; the purpose of this paper is to see what it is that Anti-Bullying legislation can do.
Bullying is defined as abusive behavior that targets someone’s gender, religion, race, sexual orientation, or nation origin. Laws against this kind of behavior in school should be in place. These laws help prevent suicide, keep society in order and morals intact while providing legal protection, and help prevent longer lasting negative effects.
I. Bullying has been going over the years, people have been getting hurt because of it, I know its not easy to stop bullying completely but if we start helping out each other we can make a big difference, bullying leads to terrible things, a lot of parents have lost their children, and its not just fair to see how someone can take control over someone else to make them unhappy, we all have the right to live the way we want to, and for all the people that are going through something don’t be afraid to speak up, stand up for yourself and if you need more help you can always reach out to the suicide prevention number which is 1800 – 273 – 8255.
As a society, we often underestimate the damages that bullying cause on children, not just America but all over, and the ones who suffer are the victims themselves. Victims are damaged with the stigma that they are weak, yet somehow have to fend for themselves against something that they have little to no control over. Whether it is for funding, a reputation or any other reason schools sweep their bullying problem under the rug or turn a blind eye, however they have more potential to end this growing issue. To the schools that think bullying is not their problem, they should know that according to heyugly.org, an anti-bullying campaign, “Approximately, 160,000 children a day stay home from school in fear of being bullied.”They also point out

(Surprising Statement) Each year in the U.S., 3.2 million students are tormented, with 160,000 of them skipping school due to it. Clearly, our school districts are not doing a substantial job of keeping students safe to allow them to earn the education they deserve. (Background Information) For example, Jamie Nabozny was harassed for his sexual orientation. Jamie was beaten to the point where he was forced to go to the hospital, after which the tormentor said (CRAFT)“If you tell anyone, I’ll kill you.” He ran away multiple times to avoid going to school, and even attempted to commit suicide. (Thesis Statement) In the Bullied documentary, it tells a story showing why no student deserves to be bullied for any reason and that the school district must protect their students.

While the word “bully” brings to mind a harmless school age right of passage to many, research today shows that bullies often times have a number of family or social problems. Also, in today’s modern world, bullies may not merely shake down classmates for lunch money; they have found ways to hound their victims long after they have left the school grounds by using the internet. Another form of bullying is sexual harassment, which is bullying based on the person’s gender or sexual preferences. Sexual harassment is a very damaging problem, especially to school age child who have yet to develop a strong sexual identity of their own. While sexual harassment is generally considered to be aimed from a male to a female, both males and females are victims and perpetrators of this destructive act. For people who are not knowledgeable on the subject of school violence, they may be confused on where the line has been crossed and dangerous behavior begins, nevertheless, there is clear data on who is a bully, what behavior is characterized by a bully, who are victims of bullies, what sexual harassment is, and who is affected by sexual harassment.
Bullying is an issue that has been around for decades and is something that can affect everyone, no matter what his or her age is. Even though bullying has changed over the years from being physical abuse and harassment that happens on the playgrounds of schoolyards to tormenting over the Internet. The same groups are still affected namely adolescents. Statistically about 30 percent of all teenagers in the United States are bullied in one-way or another (“Teenage Bullying”).
Bullying is a devastating issue that threatens the well-being of today’s youth. Those who are most likely at risk are those who; have a learning or physical disability i.g., autism or ADHD, are underweight or overweight, are gay/lesbian/transgendered, or speak a different language. Of course, there are no specific guidelines of who will become victims of bullying. Children who are bullied experience lower self-esteem, greater loneliness, greater anxiety, and more depression in addition to the already stressful adolescent years. The longer the bullying occurs the more profound the symptoms can become. As a low-level, subtle form of violence, bullying creates an unsafe school environment and can lead to more serious types of violence among students (Whitted & Dupper, 2005).
Bullying is a repeated harmful act that continues to affect millions of students every year. There is no stereotypical person that is a target for bullying; anyone can be its victim. There may not always be any signs of physical harm during these attacks, but our children always suffer emotional harm. Educating students, teachers and parents seems to be the only valid solution to this problem. There are many organizations that can educate the schools on this subject but for it to work people must care. Maybe one day, when enough people realize that this problem will not go away with out their help, we can eliminate bullying from our schools. In a perfect world there would be no bullying, but if you could ask Rachel Scott she would tell you we do not live in a perfect world, only a hopeful one.
“Researchers have conducted that at least 25% of all children will be affected by bullying at some point during their school years, and many of these children miss significant numbers of school days each year owing to fear of being bullied” (Bray, M., Kehle, T., Sassu, K. (2003). Bullying has become a major problem for our students and our schools. Children are missing educational time and are losing self-confidence because they are afraid or intimidated by other students. We, as teachers, need to reduce bullying in our schools and prevent bullying from being a reoccurring issue in the lives of our students in order for them to learn, grow and develop. Our goal as teachers should be “to reduce as much as possible-ideally to eliminate completely- existing bully/victim problems in and out of the school setting and to prevent the development of new problems” (Olweus, D. (1993).
Bullying has become a serious problem in public schools systems. Being a victim of bullying is a daily struggle for some students. The issue continues to grow, but the question is how to stop bullying from occurring. Many ways have been attempted to stop bullying, but some are more effective than others. Having the students get involved seems to have the most positive effect on the bullying issue in public school systems.
