When people get together in groups, power will be exerted. When employees convert this power into action, they are said to be engaged in politics. Organizational politics involves those activities taken within organizations to acquire, develop, and use power and other resources to obtain one’s preferred outcomes”. Machiavellians are likely to be effective manipulators of other people. They often are able to influence others, particularly in face-to-face contacts, and tend to initiate and control social interactions. As a result, Machiavellianism can be associated with a tendency to engage in political behavior.
LOCUS OF CONTROL Locus of control refers to the extent to which individuals believe that they can control events that affect them. Individuals with a high internal locus of control believe that events result primarily from their own behavior. Those with a high external locus of control believe that powerful others, fate, or chance primarily determine events that affect their lives. People with a high locus of control try to engage more in political behavior.
RISK-SEEKING PROPENSITY
Risk taking ability varies from individuals to individuals. Some people are risk averters whereas some others are risk seekers. Risk seekers tend to engage more in political behavior than risk avoiders because of the chance of getting negative outcomes.

The idea of Machiavellianism has been around since the 16th century and played a role in how people try to get what they want. Machiavellianism refers to a person who only has their best interests in mind and will do whatever is needed to get what they want. In the play “Much Ado About Nothing”, there are characters that display Machiavellian traits. Two of those characters are Don John and Borachio. Don John is more Machiavellian than Borachio because he pays others to help him come out on top and he fights people that have what he never had.
Machiavelli believes that a government should be very structured, controlled, and powerful. He makes it known that the only priorities of a prince are war, the institutions, and discipline. His writings describes how it is more important for a prince to be practical than moral. This is shown where he writes, "in order to maintain the state he is often obliged to act against his promise, against charity, against humanity, and against religion" (47). In addition, Machiavelli argues that a prince may have to be cunning and deceitful in order to maintain political power. He takes the stance that it is better for the prince to be feared than loved. His view of how a government should run and his unethical conduct are both early signs of dictatorship.
Machiavelli understood the importance of keeping the good will of the governed populace, and with this as its backbone, The Prince provides historically supported advice on how to rule. Because of this, the Machiavellian doctrine has been accepted and followed, knowingly or unknowingly, by multitudes of princes, kings, prime ministers and presidents since his time.
William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar utilizes similar methods. As shown in Julius Caesar and The Prince, a leader who follows Machiavelli’s advice will accomplish their goals; if the leader does not adhere to Machiavelli’s recommendations, then the leader will not fulfill his aspiration. A character from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Cassius, exhibits Machiavellian attributes of manipulation and a drive to accomplish his goal of assassinating Julius Caesar by any means. Cassius was able to successfully manipulate both Brutus and the fellow conspirators. Cassius was able to influence Brutus enough to make Brutus believe that killing Julius Caesar, Brutus’ best friend, was the right action.
So when at work or at a party you have to ultimately make a choice. At work, you can choose to do poorly because you think your work will be overlooked resulting in an external locus of control or work hard because you think you determine the results of your work, which is an internal locus of control. If an individual has a high score, they usually maintain emotional distance. Generally the average is 25. My score is a 22, which seems pretty high. A very accurate example of a Machiavellian prince is Denethor, Steward of Gondor. In the military, it is only marginally important. Usually, the larger the company, the more part the politics play in your ability to perform.
Social-learning theory states that “people can learn through observation and direct experience (Robbins & Judge, 2009).” In many organic organizations, learning by “hands-on” is the essential ingredient to a successful organization. Their openness allows this type of training to flourish among the managerial-employee relationship. While social-learning may be applicable and positive for the concept of leadership, there may be a contrasting view in terms of the concept of office politics. In other words, learning by observation and experience from the daily transactions that go on in the organization will bring the best qualities out of leadership, and vice-versa, but it may bring about the worst of the organization in terms of politics.
