What jumps to my mind the most about Macalester College is the Mission Statement. Coming from Gaza Strip and traveling to the US as an exchange student for one year made me highly interested in cultures and diversity. Mac is greatly centered around multiculturalism and internationalism, which is exactly what I'm looking for. During my exchange year, beside growing up as a person, I have made so many friends from all over the world and I have learned so much about their cultures. Mac has such a diverse student body and with all the organizations and clubs that connect these students together, it becomes a better place for me to continue my path of learning about these cultures and make more friends. Not forgetting the strong academics that Mac offers, which will qualify me to be an erudite person to make a change in the world.

...Selecting a college to attend was a lengthy process. I applied to four different schools. I outweighed all the pros and cons of each college. The ultimate goal was to persevere and graduate with a degree. As a high school student, I think I found Ohio State appealing because of all the hype that surrounded it. Once I came to the conclusion that I wanted to go into the medical field, I realized that I needed to be in an atmosphere where I could maintain my focus. Nonetheless, the most consequential influencing factor was regarding finances. Case was extremely expensive but I received a substantial amount of financial help compared to Ohio State. In addition, I was fortunate to obtain a work study job that helped with living expenses. I knew that college would not be easy especially given Case’s reputation. In the end, I am confident I made the correct decision.

St. Mary is a better fit for me socially. At my old school many of my fellow classmates did not treat people with respect. Not many students seemed to truly care about the well being of their peers. Whereas at St. Mary, it feels like more of a community. We all look out for each other and try to help out one another. Incomplete A man was brought into this world on May 19,1925 to serve his people and help them open many doors. This man started of as a nobody and is now known to the world as being one of America's greatest Civil Rights leaders. Malcolm X Little was the 4th child born to Reverend Earl and Louise Little. He also had 3 half siblings. His dad believed in self-determination and worked for the unity of black people and tried to teach Malcolm the same way. His dad tried to raise Malcolm to be aware of his ethnic background and dignity. Violence was always sparked by white people that were trying to stop black people such as Rev. Little. (Malcolm's father) After he was born his family quite a few times before he they finally settled in Lansing, Michigan. His father became active in the University of Negro improvements Assoc. he also go involved in the Black Baptist Church. Throughout Malcolm's life he was dedicated to black people. I guess you could say that he followed in the footsteps of his father. Even though Malcolm, his brothers, sisters, and parents were all shot, burned out of their homes, harassed, and threatened they still fought for their freedom and for what they believed in. This culminated in the assassination of his father by the white people. When Malcolm was only 6 years of age his father was shot and died. Although all this happened to Malcolm throughout his life he still continued to go to school.
Being alone those first couple weeks of school in an unfamiliar place, was terrifying. Each and every moment walking through those halls or sitting in the chair with a room full of strangers we lonely. I managed to make one singular friend who has lead me to meet more people than i ever thought i would. These past few months we have had opposing work schedules, we would never talk outside of school which has started us to lead in different direction.
It is our differences that make us unique and it is our similarities that make us strong. In science classes it can be difficult to talk about different cultures, but I think it’s important to create an inviting classroom atmosphere. It is human nature to associate with people who like you, talk like you and act like you. It is my job to create a culturally responsive classroom. Heterogeneous grouping is one way I combat this human instinct. When students are grouped based on their varying abilities, it completely negates the student’s ability to group themselves based on who they are friends with and what is most comfortable
Imagine being alone with no friends and no one to talk to. Now, place yourself in a location where you are surrounded by closed tight-knit groups where acceptance from those groups is a challenge to obtain. Then, picture yourself back when you were in high school, but this time, apply the image you have created for yourself. Do you wish for acceptance? Or friendship? Do you feel confident in taking the challenges that high school will bring? High school has a significant impact on an individual’s development. Whether it is their personality or behavior, an individual who goes through high school can see changes in their characteristics. A common stereotype in high school that is largely portrayed in the media is the existence of cliques. Cliques can give an individual a sense of belonging or a sense of betrayal. These two behaviors are commonly seen with the acceptance or rejection from these groups. An immediate result from these two actions is a change in morale or confidence for that individual. Cliques exist in high school due to individual conformity. An individual conforms to the group in order to feel accepted or to feel secured. Groups or cliques in high school have a significant negative effect on an individual’s development of characteristic and personality and the reasons as to why individuals join these types are not justified.
Teachers and peers Teachers played a huge role in my development because I started preschool at the age of two, so I spent a lot of time in some sort of classroom setting and interacted with the teachers. When I was younger a lot of times I preferred to be around the teachers, mostly because being an only child at the time, that was all I was used to. There were times when I did interact with my peers. Most of the time I spent was with my cousin because we had the same class. Once I was old enough to start kindergarten I was confident that it was going to be a cake walk. I met a group of friends and was excelling in class. However, my friends and I had a very hard time getting along, so we were later separated. On October 5, 2011 Steve Jobs passed away in his home in Palo Alto California; Jobs had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2003. Steve brought so much different technological advancement that most people use everyday without knowing who created them. Everything that Jobs created, he did because he understood what his customers wanted, and where the market was going. Steve Jobs believed in all of his products and innovations he sold to people, and had faith in the people he worked with was what really shaped Apple. After leaving the company and then returning, Steve Jobs’ influence made Apple one of the top computer companies in the world.
I have been to so many different schools that I cannot even count them all using all 10 fingers. You would think that by now I would be used to being the new kid, but with every move it just gets harder and harder. I have learned that it is harder to be the new kid when you are older versus when you are younger. As a kid it is cool to be the new kid and everyone wants to be your friend. In high school it is the complete opposite. Unless you approach them, most high school students won’t even bother talking to you. I felt uncomfortable and nervous (in all honesty, I still am) meeting strangers, consequently this did not help that fact in my first year. Seeing how I had no choice in the matter, I became cooperative and thoughtful of others; it was cause of this, I felt assured and at ease for my unaccustomed school year.
The most fulfilling or rewarding experience I have had as a college student here at USC has simply been having the opportunity to be surrounded by motivated students, professors, and advisors that have encouraged me to expand my horizons and better myself. Without the Honors College, I would have never met and bonded with my current roommates or any of my other college friends, who push me to try new things and work harder every day. The Honors classes I have been enrolled in have provided me with the opportunity to interact with students who are passionate about what they are studying. I wondered how I would meet classmates with different ways of thinking, many of them with different ages, customs, nationalities and ways of life. This really was one of my greatest expectations. Nowadays, I have met so many different and wonderful people, willing to support each other in everything, starting over with a primary and a common goal for all, fighting to get the final result, becoming nurses. More than that, we have become good friends that support each other most of the time.
