Due to WellStar being a multi facility health system, its organizational design is constantly being reviewed for simpler and more efficient processes. WellStar’s two smallest hospitals, WellStar Paulding and WellStar Douglas, previously under went reconstruction with regards to their hierarchical structure in Patient Access Services (PAS). WellStar Paulding, the smallest facility of the five hospitals, renovated their managerial chain of command in PAS. WellStar Paulding’s patient volume is less than half in comparison to the 4 additional hospitals. As a result, their staff is smaller and only requires minimal supervision. This paper’s brief intent is to identify the policies and procedures currently being developed at Midwest Hospital. It identifies how the company’s Management Committee was formed and how they problem solved and delegated responsibilities. This paper recognizes the hospital’s greatest attributes and their weakest link. Midwest Hospital hired Dr. Herb Davis to help facilitate the development and implementation of resolutions for each issue.
According to Bolman and Deal, structure “is a blueprint for formally sanctioned expectations and exchanges among internal players and external constituencies.” (Bolman, 2013, p.46) When a structure is inadequate, difficulties result both between the internal players and the external constituencies. However, it is not as important to find the perfect structure, as it is to “putting people in the right roles and relationships” within the structure chosen. (Bolman, 2013, p. 45) When this happens, the structure will allow people to do their job well. The goal in my issue is to give safe and quality care to any mental health (MH) patient in our Emergency Department (ED). I have identified the following structural elements in my organization that are either driving forces or restraining forces toward this goal.
The Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization that provides charitable funds to 170 children’s hospitals in the United States and Canada. Nearly 500 corporations participate in fundraisers and campaigns that provide hospitals with equipment, research, and care to children who suffer from injuries and illnesses. To date, Children’s Miracle Network has raised more than 4.7 billion dollars, and what’s unique about this organization is that every penny stays within the network (CMN, n.d.). Children’s Miracle Network has been extremely successful over the last thirty one years due to the relationships that they have built with corporations, the extreme media coverage that they obtain, and the lives and stories of those associated with CMN that have influenced communities to make a difference one dollar at a time.

This addresses the environment in which nurses practices and strives for “an innovative environment where strong professional practice flourishes and where the mission, vision, and values come to life to achieve the outcomes believed to be important for the organization” (ANCC, 2008). This type of environment is accomplished by nurses working together towards a strategic plan outlined with facility policies and knowledge-based nursing and skills to achieve desired outcomes and accomplish organizational goals. I believe my facility does a great job with structural empowerment. Our nurse manager makes sure we know what our goals are as a unit. We review hospital satisfaction scores and infection rates to determine what practices need to be addressed for achieving organization and desired outcomes. We work to provide cost-effective care that exceeds national standards for excellence while working to strengthen bonds between staff members and making sure that at our facility “caring comes first”
In 1946, a woman by the name of Mary Lasker, a member of the original ASCC, helped raise more than $4 million for the Society, where one million of it was used to establish and fund infamous cancer research (ACS Inc, 2011). Soon after, Dr. Sidney Farber, one of the Society’s first research grantees, achieved the first temporary cancer remission in a child with acute leukemia using the drug Aminopterin (ACS Inc, 2011). The ACS has been developing research theories for decades, with approximately $3.5 billion dedicated to finding a cure to cancer through research (ACS, 2011). With the ACS name nationally recognized, they were able to help fund many national, government, and hospital prevention strategies and research.
The pinnacle of a highly functioning healthcare organization is the Magnet Model which shares the servant leadership tenants of empowerment, fostering interdisciplinary relationships, leadership development, individual development, access to resources, and staff participation in decision making6. Looming budget cuts and recent reports of poor healthcare delivery have resulted in s an urgent need to enhance care despite forthcoming reductions in resources. With these enhanced challenges it is imperative that leaders employ strategies and embrace philosophy that will maximize resources. The Institute of Medicine has released a statement emphasizing health care services leaders need to be involved with others as full partners in a context of mutual respect and collaboration7. Furthermore, an analysis of challenges in health care concluded that there are no models to meet the need for human resource management and work environment in health care, however focus should be on flexibility, lifelong learning, interdisciplinary teamwork and shared decision making8 reflecting the tenants of servant

This chapter helps explain the content of qualities and proficiency for healthcare managers to be effective. Once again, effective management skills or certain qualifications enhance a healthcare organization environment. Healthcare managers and supervisors must have the capacity to handle challenges while the organization objectives and regulations may change over a period of time. Effective healthcare management governs the success of a healthcare organization. There are many different skill sets and leadership styles to be effective as a manager. Support of a decentralized organizational philosophy can transform organizations, staff, and patients because it affects the culture, improves staff outlook, promotes personal involvement and encourages staff to reach higher levels of quality care. In my organization, nursing leaders should strive to involve all patient care units and staff in shared governance, educate unit leadership council chairs, and build on the positive aspects by empowering, motivating and developing staff members. These actions will increase creativity, responsibility, intellectual stimulation, and well-being.
With regard to the healthcare organization, it is essential to develop a strategic plan and a clear vision so that the patient focused care will be at par with the organizational process that is conducted operationally and on a daily basis. SSM Health Care has its call letters for meetings standardized at all their sites as part of its protocol. Its values and missions are attached to its call letter for meetings as constant reminders for their staff. Indirectly, this approach helps in translating our vision on how people should behave at SSM Health Care.
As I have mentioned, the Moffitt Cancer Center resides on the campus of the institution that will grant my degree. The Moffitt Cancer Center has been a site of previous supervised field experience requirements and is where I plan to fulfill my field experience credits. This center is ranked number six on U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals for Cancer with a vision to transform cancer care through service, science, and partnership. The ability to acquire training through this distinguished cancer center will be a tremendous privilege that I am immensely looking forward to.
