Love comes in all shapes, sizes, and entities. Okay, so not the typical theme for a horror movie. Except, who says scary movies can not be touching. Mama made its debut in 2013. It was directed by Andy Muschietti. The cast included Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, and Daniel Kash. The major conflict of this movie was that Mama, the entity of a psychotic woman, has taken to children and claimed them as her own. One morning a father too his two young daughters to a cabin in the woods. As the girls were looking out the window, the father pulled a gun. He planned on killing both his children and then shooting himself. Before he could pull the trigger, he was engulfed in black smoke an disappeared. That was Mama. The two girls were alone in the woods. Or so they thought. Mama took care of them. Kept them as her own. Eventually the children are rescued and sent to live with their uncle. Mama terrorized the family. She did not want anyone taking her little girls away from her. When she was alive she was unhealthy, psychotic woman named Edith. Edith had a physical deformity. Edith escaped out of the asylum, stabbed a nun, and stole the baby she was holding. The audience of the movie now suspects that the baby was hers. Edith runs off with the child. She gets chased into the forest. Edith gets backed into a corner. Her only choice is to jump off a cliff into a lake. On her way down the baby hit a branch and died instantly. Edith survived. Mama claiming those two young girls is her way of getting her baby back. Identifying the protagonist and antagonist in this movie is a tough one. I believe Mama is both the protagonist and antagonist. To most people it is obvious that she is the antagonist. She is trying t... ... middle of paper ... ...ull. Same goes for the music. Cheery music in cheery scenes, sad music in sad scenes, and scary music in scary scenes. Wardrobe is another important factor. Annabel wore dark clothes and a lot of dark makeup. From that you understood her punk rocker personality and image. The makeup in the movie was amazing. I had no idea Mama was played by a man. They were able to make this man fully look like a woman. A deformed one none the less, but still a woman. So, overall I thought it was a good movie even though it left some unanswered questions. I like that it was not predictable. I always find that horror movies are predictable. Like if she goes in the basement she is going to die. Mama was a movie of mystery, a movie you had to try to figure out as you go along. It was one big puzzle. If you enjoy movies like that I would recommend Dream House or The Cabin in the Woods.
She keeps Tita from her true love, Pedro, and it is later revealed that Mama Elena herself once suffered from a lost love, embittering her for the rest of her life. Any child of her is deemed unworthy when he/ she does something that is against her "rules. " She takes this to the extreme where the rules are imposed on her more "public family," John Brown and Pedro included. Allowing her husband to cry for his dead brother gave her a strength and purpose that would have been hard to attain outside her family sphere. She was a poor black woman in Harlem, yet she was able to give her husband permission for weakness, a gift that he feared to ask for in others. She gave him the right to a secret, personal bitterness toward the white man that he could not show to anyone else. She allowed him to survive. The question about whether or not they should keep the house forms inside Mama’s head near the end of the play, but she quickly changes her mind. Mama never lost sight of her goals, no matter how hard nature attacked them.
1. Walter - His dreams of owning a licquor store conflict religiously with Mama's value system. The conflict between Mama and Walter is amplified by the fact that it is Mama's apartment in which the family lives and Walter is unable/unwilling to make decisions because Mama is so domineering. Ironically, it is the one decision that she eventually lets Walter make which nearly destroys the family.
The movie revolves around the sometimes love hate relationship between Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara and how she will do whatever it takes to survive. It over romanticizes the old south and how the plantations were run and deals with topics such as slavery, reconstruction of the south and has a strong feminist survival theme to it.
The film focused on young women who were fighting for the right of future generations of womens to vote and run for political office. Alice Paul and Lucy Burns were the two main women who started the Congressional Union; they put their lives in danger, sacrificing their health to help American women have the right to vote and take office. These two women held peaceful, nonviolent protests in order to revolutionize the women’s suffrage movement. Some of the women involved in the non-violent protests against Woodrow Wilson ended up being imprisoned. They were force-fed and treated poorly. In the end, most of the women were able to see the results of the hard work that they put into the women’s suffrage
The film chronicles the histories of three fathers, and manages to relates and link their events and situations. First is Mitchell Stephens and his relationship with his drug-addict daughter. Second is Sam, and the secret affair he is having with his young daughter Nicole. He is somewhat of a narcissistic character because of his preoccupation with himself and pleasing himself, and his lack of empathy throughout the film for the others in the town. Third is Billy, who loves his two children so much that he follows behind the school bus every day waving at them. Billy is also having an affair with a married woman who owns the town’s only motel. On the exterior the town is an average place with good people just living their lives. But, beneath all the small town simplicity is a web of lies and secrets, some which must be dealt with in the face of this tragedy.
“I am a large, big boned woman with rough, man-working hands” Mama describes of herself in the short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker. Mama, who additionally takes the role of narrator, is a lady who comes from a wealth of heritage and tough roots. She is never vain, never boastful and most certainly never selfish. She speaks only of her two daughters who she cares deeply for. She analyzes the way she has raised them and how much she has cared too much or too little for them, yet most of all how much they value their family. Mama never speaks of herself, other than one paragraph where she describes what she does. “My fat keeps me hot in zero weather. I can work outside all day, breaking ice to get water for washing” (Walker, 60). She does not need to tell readers who she is, for her descriptions of what she does and how her family interacts, denotes all the reader needs to know. Although Mama narrates this story rather bleakly, she gives readers a sense of love and sense of her inner strength to continue heritage through “Everyday Use”.
Early in the film , a psychologist is called in to treat the troubled child :and she calmed the mother with a statement to the effect that, “ These things come and go but they are unexplainable”. This juncture of the film is a starting point for one of the central themes of the film which is : how a fragile family unit is besieged by unusual forces both natural and supernatural which breaks and possesses and unites with the morally challenged father while the mother and the child through their innocence, love, and honesty triumph over these forces.
Mama's plant symbolizes her family and the African American community during this time period. Just as the plant is sickly and dying in Acts I and II, so too is the Younger family dynamic. At the end of Act III, however, the plant begins to look healthier after getting some sun, just like the family does after deciding to move and standing up to Mr. Lindner's possible threat. At the end of the play, after everyone exits the apartment, Mama "comes back in, grabs the plant, and leaves for the last time"(Hansberry 577), symbolizing that the family has moved on from the dark, sickly times of their past to a brighter, healthier day future. The plant also symbolizes the African American community during this time period. Just as the plant struggles to flourish and must live with limited opportunities for sunlight, the African American community in the early- to mid-20th Century struggled to flourish and was plagued by limited access to

The plot of the movie starts out in the woods as Keller Dover and his son Ralph Dover are deer hunting on Thanksgiving. Keller is teaching Ralph how to hunt incase of a disaster in which he would need to use survival skills. The movie then takes you to the Dover household in a suburban neighborhood. Mama is a powerful, strong witted person. She has a lot of control in this play and dominates as a woman character. This is unusual because this is usually a male’s position in life. She is a woman, “who has adjusted to many things in life and overcome many more, her face is full of strength”.
