Lowe’s - Never Stop Improving
Lowe’s is a large chain of home improvement outlets with more than 1840 stores in North America. Their corporate slogan is ‘Never Stop Improving’
Their mission: ‘Customer service and community service are core commitments at Lowe's — and they have been for more than 60 years. Being a good neighbor means being committed to improving the places our employees and customers call home. We see that as an investment in our future. We've grown that investment as Lowe's has grown from a small-town hardware store in North Wilkesboro, N.C., to the second-largest home improvement retailer in the world.’
Does the web site reflect the mission statement?

is broken down into eight sub headings: • Company Overview - This gives a brief history of the company, including some interesting statistics concerning the size of stores, number of employees and product lines. A third of the text is devoted to promoting the community services that Lowe’s support by way of volunteer hours donated by employees and large financial donations made by the company for community projects and education grants. That definitely is in line with the community service commitment, it’s hard to imagine that they could be as successful as the statistics show without great customer service, but it’s merely assumed by this information. • Corporate Citizenship - Reiterates and expands upon the way money donated by the company and time and money donated by the employees of the company is used to support the local communities in which the business operates.
Four more sub headings are used with links to even more in depth pages entitled Our Community Strategy, Investing in Education, Improving Our Communities, Providing Disaster Relief. The company is huge but in turn so is their capacity to help, the scale and diversity in the approach to community service is undeniable. This further supports the mission statement in both community and customer service.
• Press - Even the press page takes the opportunity to continue delivering the message of the mission. Tucked in-between press release headlines about consumer conferences and sales earnings results is the very community focused ‘March 4. 2016 - Habitat For Humanity And Lowe’s To Help 1,000 Families Have A Safe, Affordable Home For The Holidays’ Contact telephone numbers and email links are prominently displayed at the bottom of the page inviting general enquires, community grant requests and public relations. Once again this area of the site is definitely in line with the company

mission. • Social Responsibility - A collage of links to stories about the charity work and donations that the company makes. A 63 page 2015 Social Responsibility Report is available here where everything from business ethics and product sustainability is examined. The CEO Robert Niblock opens this report with a letter where he states ‘What does it mean to be socially responsible? At Lowe’s, it means we’re accountable—to customers, to our people and to the communities we serve. It means we aim to do what’s right—to find a solution that works for all of us. It means we strive to be trustworthy—to do what we say and keep our commitments.’ That sounds like customer and community service to me. • Careers - Lowe’s employs more than a quarter of a million people and that increases in the spring and summer season by another forty-six thousand! Their employees are their community, they are also their customers. They are what drive the business and allow the mission of growth to continue. Glassdoor has almost nine thousand reviews posted from Lowe’s associates, 71% Approve of the CEO, 70% would recommend to a friend and an average rating of 70% average score in the following areas: Cultures & Values. Work/Life Balance, Senior Management, Compensation & Benefits and Career Opportunities. Happy and committed employees will help deliver on all areas of the mission statement, another tick in the box for Lowe’s. • Sponsorships - Here you are able to create an account and build a profile to submit a sponsorship proposal directly to Lowe’s for any local, regional or national location in the United States or Canada. Having a direct point of access customised especially for making a request of this nature is a strong display of the commitment Lowe’s has to fulfilling the mission statement. • Investors - This page focuses on the money, here you can see current share prices, access annual reports and even buy stock directly.
Their mission statement does mention investment but not the share buying type. However it does also mention the growth of the company from its single store in North Carolina to the second largest home improvement retailer in the world. This part of the ‘about us’ area of the site is somewhat neutral in relation to my interpretation of the mission statement. Of course Lowe’s needs to make money, they are a business so this is completely appropriate but it’s not directly mentioned in he mission statement though it doesn’t contradict it either.
• Request a Lowe’s - This is just as simple as it sounds! Do you want a new Lowe’s store somewhere? Just ask! A form requests your name and contact information, comments and asks if you would like to be contacted. I don’t know of another retailer who does this but what a great way to have the market place tell you where there is a need for your business to
operate. Lowe’s ‘about us’ page definitely does live up to the mission statement. They are a well organised business with a strong reputation and a huge customer base. They are not just talking the talk with buzz words like ‘community’ and ‘donation’ they are walking the walk. Changing lives and improving the world where we live. They are doing a great job and I hope they too never stop improving. References

Yes, the company, Culver’s website does reflect on its mission statement. Craig Culver’s mom, Ruth Culver was the one who discovered the special way of making Culver’s Butterburgers. This method is still being used today. Craig says, though it takes longer to make, its worth it at the end. Culver’s is also very dedicated to making the the world’s finest fresh frozen custard. It’s very rich and whoever admits eating at Culver’s, can recall their first time trying it. Ruth Culver was a sweetheart herself. She made everyone who stepped in that door feel welcome and accepted. The reason Culver’s still stands today is because of the way Ruth was. She was genuine and really cared about the opinions of others. Below is the statement from the Culver’s.
In the early 2000’s Lowe’s was rapidly intensifying its presence nationwide. The company carried a varied assortment of home improvement products and catered to the needs of retail as well as commercial business customers. Lowe’s expanded their reach by acquiring a 41-store chain, Eagle Hardware and Garden, and engaging in a strategic alliance with HGTV to obtain a more profound existence in their market (Rouse, 2005). By 2004, Lowe’s operated almost 1,000 stores with plans to continue expansion across the nation (Rouse, 2005). The company has a core competency in helping customers meet their home improvement needs at a low price. In order to use this core competency to gain a competitive advantage, the company has focused on key functional strategies. To continue their success, Lowe’s must specifically focus on marketing, logistics, and human resource management strategies.
Lowe’s employs more than 260,000 people in more than 1830 stores; these employees are trained to provide exceptional customer service as well as receiving up-to-date product knowledge to assist customers with their improvement needs. In addition, Lowe’s has upgraded store information technology infrastructure to assist employees in accessing product data faster and easier. This is accomplished by providing the sales team with computers that have Internet access, and Ipad’s and Iphone’s loaded with specialized apps (Lowes, 2014).
The Article, "Renovating Home Depot," describes how, since the arrival of the new Chief Executive, Robert Nardelli, the business strategy has shifted to a more militaristic style. In the beginning, Home Depot was a "decentralized, entrepreneurial" business, and now is switching to a different management style. Nardelli loves to hire ex-soldiers, and is perhaps using the armed services as a role model for the new business structure. Under Nardelli's leadership, Home Depot is becoming more centralized and the good financial reports following this are signs that it a good strategy (Grow 50).
Lowe’s Companies, Inc. is averaging the opening of about two stores per week. This is part of an unprecedented two billion dollar store expansion, which is the most aggressive expansion in the company’s fifty-five year history; thus, magnifying Lowe’s locality and customer convenience in the United Sates home improvement marketplace. Lowe’s new superstores are currently the largest in the home improvement marketplace, averaging a retail space of about 150,000 square feet. (http://www.lowes.com)
I would suggest that they incorporate more diversity in their ads and campaigns to reach different ethnicities if they want to continue to expand. Also, in stores, particularly the Willow Grove, PA location, is very large and spacious. Upon entering the store it is primarily women’s apparel and accessories, as well as men’s. Maybe the company can incorporate more of its products in this location, to provide consumers with more of a product assortment.
Response: Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Habitat for Humanity believe that everyone deserves a decent place to live and brings resources together to build affordable housing for the in need population.
Before comparing each company’s benefits plan there should be some discussion on the three companies’ history. According to homedepot.com, The Home Depot was founded in 1978, which makes it fairly young when compared to the other two companies, yet it is the largest home improvement retailer in the world (n.d.). When deciding on which non-profit organization to give resources to, a person must think of a number of questions that need to be answered in which to choose a certain one. The most pertinent of these questions is the one that asks which cause the person cares about the most. The problem, for a majority of the population, is that they just do not know what they truly care about. That is why the United Way is the best option for donations. Lowe’s has maintained their pricing strategy with the advantages to the company, as well. The Lowe’s organization is able to focus more on marketing quality and less on sales advertisements. There is less sales fluctuation which helps out with staffing and their business practices, in general, become easier. It goes without saying that Lowe’s has a distinct advantage using this pricing strategy, simply because of its name: Lowes, plus the letter “t”, equals lowest, as in lowest pricing available. It looks like the strategy is continuing to work as 2017 is shaping up to be a better year than 2016 for the Lowe’s organization. Net earnings for the first three quarters were $2.9 billion, versus $2.4 billion for the same timeframe in 2016, according to the company’s Nov. 21, 2017 report (News Release). Lowe’s President and CEO, Robert Niblock, stressed at a conference that Lowe’s intends to be price competitive, whether the competitor is another store or an online retailer. In other words, the Lowe’s organization will always compete in the price wars as they continue to keep the consumer in
The relationship between young people and nonprofits can be the start of a significant change in our community, and should be a reciprocal and powerful educational experience. An open-minded and encouraging flow of communication between organizations and community members can be the launchpad for the social and environmental change organizations talk about and try for every day. Together, we can make change – not just a semblance of idealism, but reality, as well.
Though, the concept of community service is not very new, its importance has developed in the past few years. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that engage and support millions of young people all over the world. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include social service organizations, non-profit providers and associations that engage both young people as well as adults as volunteers. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society.
