Love Theme
I believe that John Collier, the author of ”The Chaser” would agree with Criss Jami’s love quote. Mr.Jami’s quote is “ A man who loves others based solely how they make him feel, or what they do for him, is really not loving others at all-but loving only himself.” “In ”The Chaser” the protagonist Alan has a love for Diana much like the one Mr.Jami describes.” Alan is only loving himself because in true, and mutual love you care about the interests of the other person in your relationship as well as your own. Although, Alan does not care about Diana's interests because he is forceing her to love him. “At the end of the story the old man told Alan “Au revoir.”” “Au revoir” is French for saying until we meet again. The old man
is acknowledging that Alan will be back to buy his life cleaner. He is going to buy this life cleaner because this artificial love will not last long. Alan would fall in line as a man who is only loving himself in Mr.Jami quote. John Collier's shows in the short story “The Chaser” that he does agree with Criss Jami’s quote.
Jean Thompson’s short story, All Shall Love Me and Despair shows that proves that the feeling of love makes people compromise even if it can be harmful to themselves. When one finds them self constantly questioning every action they do when around a specific person, they may want to reconsider their relationship with that person. I believe this because one should be able to be comfortable, and them self, especially around those that they love. Annie and Scout are a couple who loves each other, but Annie second guesses most of her actions around Scout.
In the short story, “The Chaser” by John Collier, a young man of the name Alan goes out to a strange old man to buy a love potion because he believes his girlfriend should only live for him. The love potion is said to transform her into an absolutely obsessed girlfriend after just one sip.
Most of the time love is our encouragement when we are in trouble, sometimes love can drag us to things we don’t want to happen in our lives. “First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl named Martha, a junior at Mount Sebastian College in New Jersey. They were love letters, but Lieutenant Cross was hoping, so he kept them folded in plastic at the bottom of his rucksack.” (p.1) The letters from Martha signed, “Love Martha” even though the letters were not love letters, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross understands that he doesn’t receive the type of love he hopes for from Martha.
Many times the love that a person is looking for is the one that a person doesn't realize.
Love is undoubtedly a universal theme with numerous characterisations in different genres. David Solway illustrates unrequited love in his poem The Dream as agonising, bewildering and hard to accept by the use of ideas, perspectives and language. In a similar way, Marc Webb’s film 500 Days of Summer and Gavin Degraw’s song Not Over You expresses this representation of unrequited love through their use of ideas, perspectives and language. They effectively translate this representation of unrequited love in their genres in order to create an emotional response from their audiences.
Robert Nozick’s Love’s Bond is a clear summary of components, goals, challenges, and limitations of romantic love. Nozick gives a description of love as having your wellbeing linked with that of someone and something you love. I agree with ideas that Nozick has explained concerning the definition of love, but individuals have their meaning of love. Every individual has a remarkable thing that will bring happiness and contentment in their lives. While sometimes it is hard to practice unconditional love, couples should love unconditionally because it is a true love that is more than infatuation and overcomes minor character flaw.
The girl Alan loves, Diana, is probably in love herself. Alan assumes that Diana does not care about his feelings for her because she does not give him the time
The main example of this is the sad situation of Helena and Demetrius during the early stages of the play. Helena is madly in love with Demetrius and would give her life for just one kind word from him. In this play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, true love plays a huge role in the play. Several relationships begin with true love such as Hermia and Lysander’s and Hypolyta and Thesus’ but some that did not begin with true love, end with true love such as Helena and Demetrius’. Helena and Demetrius, in my perspective, were meant to love each other so that everyone may be able to love each other in harmony.
Love can influence people in mysterious ways, the underlying cause is promise, that there is hope for something greater than oneself. We also see how this can create a chasm between family members. The fact of the matter is, love can stem from various situations, memories, or personal thoughts. There are some forbidden marriages that turn out to be a good thing, there are also parents who want give a home to an unsuspecting child they never knew they wanted. Certain situations determine who a person is through the experiences they are given and the feelings that are felt from it. Most of the stories that have come along are giving to us with an example of separation, a longing for love, an outcome that may or may not be beneficial in the long
Love caused his logic and sensibility to fail him, and provoked him to commit monstrous acts that destroyed many lives. Through analysis of “Happy Endings” by Margaret Atwood, it can be concluded that one of her many intended lessons was to show the value and the powerful effects of love. Atwood successfully proved this lesson by using powerful examples of both successful and disastrous relationships to illustrate the positive and negative effects of love. Atwood truly demonstrated what it is like to follow your heart.
Even though agapeistic love is certainly a noble ideal, it is unstable equilibrium and an easy victim of the “prisoner’s dilemma,” in which the best alternative for a group of people is not the best alternative for each person in the group.
The Chaser,” by John Collier is a short story about a young man, Alan Austen, who is desperate to find love. Finding true love takes time and some people may not ever find it. Alan Austen has had a rough time finding true love and is looking for a way find it quickly. He is willing to try anything for love. Austen is searching for a potion the will make someone Diana fall in love with him. He does not want just anyone to fall in love with him; he wants Diana. Unfortunately, he is pursing is a fake love and he will live a miserable life if……. Austen will realize living without love is better than forcing love. In John Collier's "The Chaser," Alan Austen feels desperate to make Diana love him and ignores warning signs, but will eventually regret his rash decision to seek out the old man's potions.
The true nature of love, can be interpreted as a temporary illusion us humans believe love to be. When Alan buys the “love potion” he finds himself excited for the first time. How exciting would it be for Diana, Alan’s love interest, to be devoted to his being and only his alone. This provides a conundrum. If we were to force a person to act a certain way, we essentially destroy the personality that had made the
John Collier writes the short story, The Chaser, telling of how a desperate, love-craving man, Alan Austen, finds himself helplessly turning to an old man for the solution to a problem only magic can fix. Deprived of love from the girl, Diana, who has caused him constant saudade, Alan makes a purchase. The trickery of the old man’s bargain is nonexistent to Alan and, eagerly, he accepts the love potion. A one dollar purchase that will have a snowball effect, eventually leading to an obsessive Diana, no free time, an extremely frustrated Alan, and, eventually, a second potion purchase. Untraceable, tasteless, and colourless, the glove-cleaner, or, life-cleaner, will rid Alan of the stress coming his way.
