Jean Thompson’s short story, All Shall Love Me and Despair shows that proves that the feeling of love makes people compromise even if it can be harmful to themselves. When one finds them self constantly questioning every action they do when around a specific person, they may want to reconsider their relationship with that person. I believe this because one should be able to be comfortable, and them self, especially around those that they love. Annie and Scout are a couple who loves each other, but Annie second guesses most of her actions around Scout.
The couple moved from Chicago to Oregon, and Annie drove the entire way. In most cases when traveling a long distance, if there is more than one capable person to drive then the driver and passengers may switch roles throughout the drive. Scouts drug addiction, which is the reason they are moving to Oregon, prevented him from being able to drive. Annie basically catered to Scout hand and foot throughout the ride, by feeding him all sugary, unhealthy foods which he would throw up on himself and in the back seat of the car. Scout assure Annie that he will go boating when he feels like it. At this point Annie sees how she really feels about Scout, and she comes to the realization that she was in love with, “the image of her suffering self-reflected in him.” All Annie wanted was for them to love each other perfectly. Scout let Annie know that “God’s the only one who loves us perfect, and God isn’t getting through on the phones. The rest of us love what gets us high. We end up hooked on all the wrong things. Gotta fly. Over and out.” Scout made the compromise two days later by taking Phil’s boat out. He wanted perfect love so he had to make the compromise to go to the only one who can give him perfect
