Lorenzo’s Oil 1. Lorenzo’s parents used the scientific method to solve the situation of lorenzo dying by coming up will solution to his ALD problem and stayed up late every night for years straight just to find a cure for ald and to save their child and all the other kids that suffer from ald and save their lives and many other life that may yet come and suffer from ald 2. It forces enzymes in the body to use oleic acid instead of saturated fatty acids. It turns off the "synthesis" spout in the sink. (The other spout is the "intake" spout from food that is eaten. 5. both of the fats have the same enzyme in common. 6. The responsibility of the medical community was to obtain evidence as to whether dietary restrictions benefited people with the disease. If people in the trial group began using other undocumented treatments, the validity of the study would be questionable, and nothing of value would be learned. A lot of the children did benefit from the dietary restrictions, and their families saw the Odones as playing a destructive role. Since some of them had previous children who had died from the disease, they had some of the same goals as the doctors. The doctors running the trials were responsible for documenting whether dietary restrictions helped. If parents wanted to do other experiments, they should not have joined the trial. 7. Analogies uses examples of stuff that we already understand so it’s easier to make connections. 8. Yes. They did not give up. It encourages people to keep trying. 9. They both learned something new about ALD every day, and eventually learned how to cure the disease by using "Lorenzo's Oil". They had to live with it every day with their son. 10. Money should go to research the big killer like cancer and heart disease. This is because resources are limited. Discretionary money should be directed to "the greatest good to the greatest number". More lives could be saved if we found a cure for cancer. 11.The olive oil only worked halfway because it was not far enough up the triglyceride chain!
Erucic acid worked and is still used today. Erucic is extracted from canola/rapeseed. It distracts one of the enzymes, preventing it from metabolizing the wrong fatty acid. In many eastern countries canola was found to prevent heart disease. 12. The support groups are suppose to be a place to help parents and the people in the group should be understanding and encouraging. For the Odense, it seemed that the people were self centered and did not encourage them, the support group discouraged things the Odones tried to do. 13.That when rats ate oleic acid, their level of VLCFSAs went down. The symposiums were intended to allow researchers working on related projects not directly connected with ALD to exchange information with the ALD researchers. Scientists working in isolation are not always aware of other areas where their work could be extremely useful. 14. Erucic acid is a long-chain unsaturated fatty acid. Like oleic acid, it suppresses the creation of VLCFSAs, but is much more
effective. 16. Mr. Odone was not a doctor and would never have been involved in this except for the fact that his son Lorenzo had the disease. The discovery of penicillin, the first antibiotic "wonder drug". The researcher looking for bacteria-fighting chemicals accidentally contaminated a sample with common bread mold, but decided to include the contaminated sample in the study anyway. Penicillin is manufactured by ordinary green bread mold.

Richard Manning Wrote the essay “The Oil We Eat – Following the Food Chain Back to Iraq” which was published in Harper’s Magazine February 2004 edition. In this essay, Manning discusses the evolution of agriculture and the consequences of it. Furthermore, Manning explores the relationship of fossil fuel, food calories and transfer of energy to illustrate earth’s prospective future. Through the use of charismatically presented factual arguments, visual powerful emotional narratives and the credibility of a few choice names, Manning creates an environment in his essay that allows flaws to escape otherwise unknown to majority reader.
The Ocean Ranger The Ocean Ranger was an offshore exploration oil drilling platform that sank in Canadian waters 315 kilometres southeast from St. John's Newfoundland, on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland on February 15, 1982, with 84 crewmembers onboard. The Ocean Ranger was the largest semi-submersible, offshore exploration, oil drilling platform of the day. Built in 1976 by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, it operated off the coasts of Alaska, New Jersey, Ireland, and in November 1980 moved to the Grand Banks. Since it was so big, it was considered to have the ability to drill in areas too dangerous for other rigs.
Fat substitutes come in various different kinds. There are those that are absorbed into the body and those that are not absorbed into the body. Olestra is one that is not absorbed into the body. It passes through the digestive system and is excreted as waste and never used. These seem harmless, but in actuality the harm is not involved in the fat intake, it is in the nutrient absorption disruption. For those fat substitutes which are absorbed, the consumer needs to consider the elimination of the fat substitute, so the problem of absorbing fat does not seem to be resolved with that product.
Genetic Family History Assessment All nurses, no matter where they practice, need to have proper training in genomics and genetics to provide the best information to clients regarding recognition, prevention, and/or treatment of diseases (Thompson & Brooks, 2011). Genetic family history can help clients discover the unique patterns of health and illness within their family. In this paper, I will complete a Genetic/Genomic Nursing Assessment using the information found in Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson’s text (2015) in Box 7-7 (p. 198). I will identify three generations of a family, analyze the genetic health risks, and consider nursing strategies for this family. The woman featured in my genetic assessment will be referred to as LG.

The role of the doctors in the movie, Lorenzo?s Oil, was a small one because after a while, Michaela and Augusto pretty much took over. The doctors diagnosed Lorenzo?s disease and told them a few treatments, but they were a waste of time. The reason why the doctor?s treatments weren?t successful was because they had a lot more rules to follow than Lorenzo?s parents did. The role of Lorenzo?s parents was they were in charge of the decisions made for Lorenzo?s treatments and hold long they wanted him to keep going on fighting the disease. One of the rules they had to follow by was the FDA so they could get the oils to treat Lorenzo.
3. The study will include 10 or more seat-in sessions with a local family counselor.
After persistent research, Augusto and Michaela discover a study that used long chain fatty acids on rats, and they decide to incorporate this oil into Lorenzo’s diet. They believe that this fatty acid manipulation would change the composition of fatty acids, and reduce Lorenzo’s C24 and C26 levels to normal. Despite the consumption of oleic acid,
...eicosapentaenoic acid), and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) are considered to be the three main fatty acids.

The land of Jambi, Indonesia, on the island of Sumatra, has been incredibly blessed with the palm oil seed. The impact of palm oil has transcended time, boundaries and borders as it has become to most widely used product for consumer good. Not one day goes by where the average consumer doesn’t utilize a product without palm oil. It is every, it is necessary and it is in high demand. This is where the role of the corporations come in. Wilmar International Limited is a corporation which has descended upon the palm oil industry with the purpose of essentially and quite literally, spreading the wealth.
However, on to discover his saturated fat level increased. His parent didn’t give up. Against others advice they added purified erucic acid in conjunction with oleic acid to Lorenzo’s diet which decrease his saturated fat level. This treatment restored Lorenzo but limited his motor and cognitive abilities. In 1992, director George Miller turned the real-life story of the Odone family and their struggle to find a cure for adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) into the movie, Lorenzo's Oil,starring Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte. Sarandon received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role as Michaela Odone. The cast of the movie received the award for best motion picture. George Miller wrote this movie to show that how a young man parents raised up against all odds to prove that doctors can try to helping
Fatty acids are another type of lipid. The common feature of fatty acids is that they are all esters of moderate to long chain fatty acids. Two polyunsaturated fatty acids, linoleic and linoleic, are designated "essential" because their absence in the human diet has been associated with health problems, such as scaly skin, stunted growth and increased dehydration. These acids are also precursors to the prostaglandins, a family of physiologically potent lipids present in minute amounts in most body tissues.
