Surfing Equipment
One of the earliest recreational activities invented was to ride a piece of wood in the ocean on a moving wave. Many cultures feared the ocean and its power, yet the ancient Hawaiians embraced it and became one with the water. It seems as if there is only one piece of equipment needed when surfing, but there is so much more. The most obvious piece of equipment is the surfboard. There is actually many types of surfboards and they are all fashioned to perform in different ways on different waves.
Shortboards- Shortboards are boards that are around 7ft in length and were extremely popular during the 70s. Shortboards have greater amounts of rocker in them than other boards. This allows the board to get to spots of the wave

These boards are the oldest type of surfboard. A longboard is the ideal beginners board because it is easy to paddle which makes it easier to catch a wave. The rails on a longboard are 2 1/2 inches or more.
Funboards- Funboards are similar to longboards yet not as long. Funboards length range from 6 feet to around 8. These boards are used to transition from a longer board to a shorter board. The funboard still maintains the ease of paddling like the longboard yet it is smaller. Funboards can come in all different folds, nose shapes, and tail shapes.
“Fish” Board- A “fish” board, commonly referred to as just a “fish” is a board that is similar to a short board. It also became very popular in the 70s and its length is shorter than a shortboard yet it is wider. A fish is used for smaller softer waves. There is little rocker in it which allows ease of paddling. It also allows it to carry out its speed in the flatter part of the wave. Its tail looks similar to a fish’s caudal fin.
Hybrid Board- A Hybrid Board, commonly referred to as a Hybrid, is a mix of all surfboards. It has the stability of a shortboard yet the same tail as a fishboard. The Hybrid is designed for medium sized

These boards lengths range from 6 feet to 10. These are the surfboards used to ride the monster waves that tower over the surfer. The board is built to handle massive drops, maintain speed, and the ease of paddling onto a huge wave. The Gun will have high amounts of rocker and usually have 4 fins . The next piece of equipment is not always a necessity in some cases it would be required. A wetsuit is a piece of attire that is used to prevent surfers from getting hypothermia. Many wave breaks are located in very cold water and a wetsuit allows the surfer to bare the water and surf the wave. The suits are made of neoprene which is a thermal insulator. Wetsuits are not always needed as I previously stated. You wouldn’t need a wetsuit in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Tahiti etc. You would need a wetsuit in California, France, Portugal etc. One of the most essential pieces of equipment is surfboard wax. Surfboard wax is used on all surfboards regardless shape or size. The wax makes the deck of the board some what sticky which allows the surfer more grip on the board. A tool that goes along with surf wax is a wax comb. A wax comb will create grooves in the wax. The groove adds even more traction and grip to the
When the age arrived when fans became increasingly enthralled with hockey, these boards were no longer practical. This was where the conundrum started. Something was necessary to keep a hockey puck, hurdling at speeds
Evolution has taken millions of years (500 million) for the Rainbow trout to have developed the fins it has today, each with a specific purpose involved in the locomotion and stability of the fish.
Wear many removable layers of clothing, and always be sure the outermost layer is 100% waterproof. Also, always wear goggles. Visibility and eye protection is very important.
The second type of vessel bottom is a round with keel design. The keel design is a narrow V-shaped hull that extends underneath to create a centerline to keep it from rolling over in rough waters. A few problems with the rounded keel hull are that it cannot travel in shallow waters. This type of boat is also more expensive to build than a flat-bottom Jon boat.
During the 1950’s when skateboarding first got it’s legs it was a very popular activity to take part in during vacations to ocean side tourist attractions, or as an activity after surfing. Yet, by 1965, skateboarding had diminished in popularity completely, therefore almost every skateboard manufacturer went out of business. . During this time the only people who even wanted to skateboard were surfers who needed something to ride to practice their surfing while the waves were flat. Due to the fact that there were no skateboards being made or sold, those who wanted to skate had to take it upon them-selves to manufacture their own boards. Using any kind of scrap they could find to build a usable board out of, such as metal scrap pieces or old planks. These determined surfers had to unscrew the trucks and wheels off of roller skates and attach them to the bottom of their boards. And because these kids were from very poor families for the most part, and next to non had jobs of their own, they had to resort to taking the trucks and wheels off the roller skates secretly in the stores. Although.., the clay wheels th...
First, you will need a snowboard. Make sure that you also buy the boots and bindings, if they do not come in the same package with the board. You will need to dress in a comfortable, loose-fitting outfit to allow flexibility. Never disregard your safety. Gloves, goggles, helmet, and wrist guards are a must, especially for beginners.
Wakeboarding is a water sport in which a rider holds onto a rope attached to a moving boat and is able to surf, jump, and twist along the water. Wakeboarding can be very challenging as a beginner, but once mastered it can also be a very exhilarating experience. Although it may look easy as a spectator, wakeboarding is not a walk in the park, and many beginners experience anxiety while first learning the sport. However, people can overcome this fear through determination and instruction from an experienced wakeboarder.
According to Dr. Craig Harrison, “surfing is an athletic sport and requires surfers to execute complex manoeuvres in highly unstable and changing environments”. Seeing as it requires such movement, I need to prepare for the waves. Strength is a skill requirement, whether it be
Still a little confused? The fins are extra surface area near the back of the rocket. This brings the Cp further back on the rocket without significantly moving the Cg..
To paddle, you first lie on your surfboard – to do this body weight needs to be positioned along the centre of the board. Your feet need to be raised slightly off the end of the board. Your body needs to be far enough back to keep the nose of the board about a couple of inches out of the water. If you are too far forward on the board you will notice that the nose of the board keeps dipping underwater making it very difficult to paddle. It will take time to find the most comfortable position.
Jake Burton Carpenter invented the first practical snowboard. As a youngster, he had always wanted to surf, but his parents would not buy him a surfboard. Coupled with his desire to be cool, Carpenter worked hard and saved his money and bought a snurfer. He modified Burton’s design. His board looked more like an oversized skateboard with waterski bindings. This gave the rider more control over the board. This was the start of modern day snowboarding. It was popular with skateboarders and surfers and gave them an alternative sport to participate in during the
The sport of surfing has had to face the cold waters of places below the equator, as well as places in the northern hemisphere. This caused people to start to experiment with the idea of a wetsuit. When the wetsuit was first invented it allowed people to surf in places and at times that nobody thought possible, for as long as they wished. Once the wetsuit had become part of popular culture it was then in a position to be improved upon. Throughout time wet suits have been sealed and improved in many ways.
Going to the beach. Of course, going to the beach requires swimwear, sunscreen, and blankets. It won’t be necessary to bring umbrellas or benches since there are ones for rent in the major beaches in the island.
Snorkeling is one of the most common underwater activities now base on most people can go snorkeling which has lesser requirements than other underwater activities. The equipment of snorkeling are only a diving tube, a set of flippers and a mask. The people of people snorkeling was that people tried to collect some
Kites have existed for many years but multi-line kites were not even invented until around 1826. People use these multi-line kites for pulling just about anything from kite boards, surfboards, skateboards, roller skates, and skis. The biggest setback for kiteboarding was whenever the riders kite hit the water it would not relaunch because of the material used to make the kites would soak up the water and become too dense to fly through the air. Then Bruno and Dominique Legaignoux came up with the idea of an inflatable kite that would relaunch even when it was soaked in 1982. This helped to increase the popularity of the sport of kiteboarding which did not really emerge until the late 1990’s. Kiteboarding has many names and nicknames but the most common names are kiteboarding, kitesurfing, and fly kiting. The sport did not start to become popular until the 21st century. Ever since then the sport’s participants have increased rapidly throughout the years as it has evolved into the sport we all watch from the shore side. (Terry)
