These past few summers I have been spending a lot more time in the water, whether it be jet skiing in Vietnam or kayaking in the waters of Florida, I have enjoyed every minute of it all. I always like watching surfers out in the waves and because of how great they make it look, I want to give it a try. Hence the reason why it is on my bucket list. Prior to surfing, there are many things I will need to gain knowledge on such as the gear, dangers, precautions, and much more. In order for me to check it off my bucket list, I will need to procure all of this information. Surfing is not just all fun and games, it is a serious sport, and to really enjoy it, I have to make sure that I am doing it right. According to Dr. Craig Harrison, “surfing is an athletic sport and requires surfers to execute complex manoeuvres in highly unstable and changing environments”. Seeing as it requires such movement, I need to prepare for the waves. Strength is a skill requirement, whether it be …show more content…
Earlier up above, I had mentioned a wetsuit and leash to be a few accessories that can be of great use. Depending on what the weather is like, a wetsuit can keep one warm (“Beginners Surfing Equipment”). Thus, I will not obtain hypothermia and freeze to my death. I also made note that the leash can be seen as a safeguard, which is entirely true because it keeps the surfer and board connected to one another incase the surfer falls of the board and renders unconscious. Furthermore, a rash guard will also help to prevent a wound from appearing. Not only does it “act as a protective layer from board rash and abrasion”, but it also shields surfers from destructive UV rays (Belt). It is a two in one deal, considering that I will not have to wear too much sunscreen or worry about acquiring painful rashes. If I want to surf in the long run, then following these precautions would benefit myself very
Wear many removable layers of clothing, and always be sure the outermost layer is 100% waterproof. Also, always wear goggles. Visibility and eye protection is very important.
In February of 2010, a woman named Dawn Brancheau died while working as an animal trainer at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida. There has been a large amount of debate about the circumstances surrounding her death—some say she slipped and fell, while others say that she was dragged in by one of the orcas, Tilikum. The controversy over her tragic death brought this question to the surface: should parks like SeaWorld be closed down for safety reasons? While this argument has been going on for a long time, the death of Brancheau spurred a wave of debates about whether the park should be allowed to remain open. On one side, people believe the parks should be shut down and the animals should be released from captivity in an effort to protect the animals and the humans. On the other side of the argument, people believe the parks should be kept open because of the benefits they offer to the world in education and conservation. In light of SeaWorld’s recent transitions, I believe the park should remain open to the public.
Earth, an endless source of wonder and beauty, produced the Great Barrier Reef. Hustling and bustling, the Reef thrives like a busy city, teeming with life. Sheltering thousands, corals, maintain the well-being of the Reef; however, the world threatens its nature and delicacy. Populations growing and technological advances increasing, the world becomes more and more disconnected with the natural world, posing an alarming risk for the planet we live on. Although many organizations try to keep the oceans clean, because of human interference and unnatural occurrences, the Great Barrier Reef needs scientific help to adapt corals to new conditions for means of survival, putting pressure on the Australian government to save their ocean environment.
Those who do typically like to get the most out of their money and take advantage of all the opportunities on the islands. Surfing is popular lifestyle that society pairs with Hawaii. The near-shore waters that range from deep blue to turquoise are often tempting; however, many vacationers do not understand how dangerous Hawaii’s currents can be. Since Hawaii is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the ocean bottom tends to drop off quickly, which causes big and powerful waves. Annually, sixty people drown or are seriously injured by the rip currents of the treacherous waters. Earlier this year, famous singer Britney Spears vacationed on the famous beaches of Hawaii. In a recent interview, so revealed she almost drowned at sea. “I went out and I thought it was like a wave pool, and I thought, ‘This is so nice and refreshing,’ but the thing I didn’t think about is when you come back the waves really come in strong.” Spears got sucked in and kept getting pulled back to sea. She was under for about five minutes before one of her security guards noticed she was struggling and was able to rescue her (Bacardi). A majority of the beaches fly a red warning flag year-round to warn beachgoers of the hazards. If one does find himself trapped in the middle of a current, it’s important to remain calm. Do not try to swim against the tide. Instead, swim parallel to the beach until the current
Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would
Two friends go out for lunch to their usual favorite sushi restaurant. They are seated and given their menus, they knew they were going to get their usual but noticed the prices have increased. Prices have gone up, and some replaced with imitation fish meat, since the last time they ate there. What might have caused this? Due the demand of fish, the price for them also increases. It’s a simple supply and demand logic, but not only is it due to the demand for these fish, it can also be due to their rareness. Over-fishing can cause what is rare and which fish species isn’t. Commercial fishing may cause fish species to go extinct, or bring in new types of fish to take the place of the other fish. In tuna we
A few winters ago, some friends invited my family and me to go snow skiing at Paoli Peaks, Indiana. I did not know how to snow ski, and I leaped at the thought of trying this new sport. On the first morning we entered the pro shop to rent all the gear and make decisions about whether or not to take lessons or go it alone. We decided to be adventurous and go it alone—no lessons. Kent and Celeste, the friends who invited us, knew how to ski and snowboard. He assured us that he could show us the basics, and we would be on our way down the slopes. All of us, after a few minutes learning how to wedge our skis started down the family trail. Although the family trail had smaller hills and appeared safe, to me it seemed way

People rode on top of inflatable beach toys, rubber rafts and even air mattresses. They swam through the rising waters to safety. Others simply waded through the water on foot. They filled plastic trash bags with their belongings to keep them dry.
I am adventurous. No I don't sky dive, wrestle crocodiles, or swim with sharks, but when asked by a group of friends to go cliff diving last summer, my best response was, “Sounds like fun!” I had never been afraid of heights yet have never experienced the thrill of cliff diving. All I could ask myself was, “What could go wrong?”
Over 130 World Records were broke in less than one year around the time of the 2008 Olympics. Nearly all the record-braking swimmers were sporting newly designed high-technology swimsuits. Because of this, most FINA officials, along with a majority of the competitive swimming world, believe that long-length high-tech swimsuits give swimmers an unfair advantage. In 2010, FINA, The International Swimming Federation, banned all high-tech suits, but let the world records that the athletes wearing the swimsuits set stand.
Underwater photography is a wonderful art and hobby, and the waterproof digital cameras used to take those marvelous pictures you see in magazines are highly specialized pieces of equipment that can withstand submersion. This makes them perfect for the job, but it also makes them expensive. If you take two digital cameras - a normal camera and a waterproof camera - that have the same abilities, the waterproof camera will cost more. Many people who have a small budget for photography do not believe they can afford to buy good underwater digital cameras. While it is true that not everyone can afford top of the line gear, it is also true that there are affordable waterproof digital cameras out there for a modest budget.
It’s quite common to hear from a friend, relative or someone you know that they will be cruising the Mediterranean sea for their upcoming vacation and board the biggest cruise ship that they can find.
When I was 5 years old, Dad woke me up one morning and informed me that he was finally going to teach me how to surf. I was ecstatic. I used to watch my brothers in envy as I crouched on the damp sand with my head between my hands resting on my knees, sulking at the fact that I wasn’t allowed to surf until I was 5.
