Raymond carver is recognized for being one of the most important writers in American literature. His style of writing tends to be minimalistic and undescriptive. Carver’s story, Little
Things is a story about a man and a woman who seemed to be married and facing a broken marriage. With little to no background information, it is hard to know if the man and woman are married. Through the story, the man is trying to leave but he also wants the baby too. The woman filled with anger and tears, holds tight of the baby. As they fight for what they want, in this short story; Raymond Carver uses symbolism, uses a unique style, and creates suspense to construct a story about a pure relationship that turns dark.

Another form of symbolism is when he talks about snow melting into dirty water. Snow is white and is seen as pure and he uses it to say their relationship is turning into a big dirty mess.

Unlike most writers, Carver has a unique writing style. Many well known writers have their own style of writing. Carver structures Little Things like a poem. Like Carver’s writing, poems can be minimalistic and short but still intriguing. The sentences in the story are very short and to the point but also creates that suspense. His style is very minimal and lack a big vocabulary but still connects with the readers. Although Carver’s writing style tends to be off putting, he still is the master of literature.
The symbolism and his own personal style brings the whole story together to create suspense. “He kept on putting his things into the suitcase.” The relationship of the man and the woman is being torn apart as he packs his things. The dialogue he uses creates the want for more and the need to know. The suspense is a great way to keep the readers interested and intrigued.
