Literature review part two Social Class Introduction to Social Class Class can be defined as organised inequality resulting in the categorisation of people and is a fundamental aspect of one’s society. As Martineau (1958:121) defines the theory as ‘the concept of social class was designed to include this process of ranking people in superior and inferior social position by any and all factors.’ Social class lies at the core of one’s culture, economy, and daily life. Subject on one’s perspective, it’s either a great advantage or disadvantage. Class can award us freedom or take it away, increase our odds for success or reduce them to nothing. The ‘lower classes’ which throughout many societies are left to face with a lower quality of life. The ‘lower middle class’ which are the managers and middle men, leading a semi-decent quality of life. The ‘upper middle class’ which are higher educated, higher job position, while the ‘upper classes’ or ‘elite’ classically represent institutional management, heads of multinational corporations, foundations and universities, which entails them to lead a much higher quality of life. Social class can be defined in many ways, this literature review is about taking the concept of social class and looking through it from a lens of how one creates an identity and status through the consumption and use of possessions one surrounds themselves with. Throughout the author’s examination of social class and its theories, he will impartially assess an analysis of articles and books based with common themes, across different disciplines and time, in order to create an enriched understanding of social class in relation to forming an identity and status through
