Titanic, the 1997 critically acclaimed disaster film combined with romance,

written and directed by James Cameron, tells the true story of the tragic sinking of

the RMS Titanic in 1912, while following a fictionalized love story between the two

main protagonists, Rose DeWitt Bukater, a wealthy, recently engaged first class

passenger, and Jack Dawson, a penniless third class passenger, who won his ticket

for the Titanic at a lucky hand in poker. From two contrasting worlds, a chance of

fate brings these two very different individuals together in a forbidden love triangle,

which ultimately ends in a love lost.

The RMS (Royal Mail Ship) Titanic, which name derived from Greek mythology

meaning huge, great, or luxurious, was named by the designer of Titanic, J.

Bruce Ismay. The ship was built with mail and passengers in mind, and set sail on

it’s maiden voyage on April 10th, 1912 from Southampton, to New York City.

However just four days later in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean at 11:40 pm,

the ship collided with an iceberg and ultimately sank later that evening. On her

maiden voyage, the Titanic was carrying 2224 passengers and crew, 1517 of the

passengers lost their lives the night of the sinking, leaving 707 survivors. On

September 1st, 1985, the ship was located on the bottom of the ocean floor, and 10

year later, writer, producer, and director James Cameron began production on his

film, Titanic, starting out with footage of the wreckage. The film went on to win a

number of awards, and is one of the highest grossing movies to date, taking second

place behind another film written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar.

Marxist analysis is a form of literary criticism and is a system of Karl Marx’s views.

Also know as Marxist criticism, it can be defined as the struggle between social

classes and its effect on history, and the belief that their one day should be a society

in which no classes exist. Since humanity itself has existed, so have social classes.

Three different types of classes existed, and still exist today. These classes are upper

class, middle class, and lower class. The upper class is the class the social group that

holds the most power, and is of course the wealthiest class of the three. Middle class

are a class of individuals that are considered “average” who have good jobs and are

not rich, but not poor, rather financially stable. Lower class refers to individuals

with the lowest social rank, lowest income, or lowest form of education.
